A few pieces now up at the exhibition “En Route: mobile forms of art & education” that opened at the Libby Leshgold Gallery at Emily Carr University on Sept 11, 2025 Big thanks Libby Leshgold Gallery, vk, Bopha, Troy & friends who came out to celebrate 100 years of ECU, & more time traveling. 💫🩵
Two grey images printed by dot matrix printer in 1981 showing the artist’s face in a work called “Letter from 1984 to 1981” framed by grey colour and mounted on a wooden wall. A photograph taken at night showing a man (the artist Ian Wallace) seated at a long table facing out of a storefront window (the original OR Gallery in Vancouver, 1983). He is reading with a small light beside him. Behind is an outline drawing of empty bottles perhaps after friends had been visiting. To the right outside the door to the building are two visitors. The photo is taken from the street (1729 Franklin St). An invitation to a show (CAVE: CAVEAT) by Laiwan showing the staggered opening hours, from 1985 at the OR Gallery.

Why is the advice individualistic — for each person to stop eating meat to save the climate? Instead the way we industrially relate to meat should be systemically changed. Stop capitalist exploitation & production for profit with its focus on low quality for mass quantity.

Please join us for the opening of En Route: mobile forms of art & education on Thurs, Sept 11, 6pm. En Route: mobile forms of art & education brings together historical & contemporary source materials, media & artworks. Image: lan Wallace, At Work, 1983. Photo courtesy of Or Gallery & Laiwan.
Photo taken at night of a storefront window where a front view of a man dressed in a white shirt is seated at a table at work looking down at a book. Behind him is an outline of a drawing pinned to the wall. He is lit to his right by a reading lamp. He is an artist alone in the room being viewed by the photographer outside on the road taking the photograph.

While decolonization is not a metaphor, it is also not a performance. It demands immediate actions: settlers accept stepping aside, giving back, opening positions, giving healthy resources freely (if it’s been polluted or corrupted, fix it), provide capacity, stop taking up space, stop explaining.

Gratitude for abundance and generosity of the earth when left to do what she does - fruit picked from the backyard of a friend’s house that’s a rental with over a dozen different fruit varieties and a vegetable garden 🦋💕
Picked abundant figs, both perfect and those over ripe. Green coloured on the outside and perfect to eat if near soft. Translucent apples and a little Asian pear. Greengage plums getting ready to turn yellow to eat. Red apples along with light green ones.

The narrative that “everything is getting more expensive” is so that everything can become more expensive. It is more expensive because we have given license for it to become expensive. Find the shopkeepers who are not price gouging you. Treat generous businesses well. Be selective & support local.

Tai Chi teaches how energy must be harnessed to not feed your opponent more energy. Direct focus on the opponent as an opponent legitimates the opponent’s stance so gaining more energy from you. This is true beyond the martial arts. To disarm them, energy must be harnessed in unexpected ways.

why plant beds are called beds as the shape of the body that lay here imprints leaves for me a breath of rest an arrest of flower friends invading dreams within this little body bed
Many small white flowers show a shape where flowers are flattened after a small animal body had slept here.

“It seems to me that one of the essential elements in tenderness is that it is a free act, a gratuitous act. It has an enormous amount to do with liberty, with freedom, because one chooses to be tender… in the face of what surrounds us, it is an almost defiant act.” - John Berger

Chomsky: to keep people passive & obedient is to strictly limit the spectrum of acceptable opinion, but allow very lively debate within that spectrum. That gives people the sense there's free thinking going on, while presuppositions of the system are reinforced by the limited range of the debate.

A system will redefine goodwill. They enter a position with a political vision & promises made to find themself voting on parking spots, or building height, or supply chain for spare parts, or on who is to pay to fix the pothole or how to clear out the homeless. It’s a death by a 1000 cuts.

Oligarchy (noun): A government of and by a few at the top, who exercise power for their own benefit. Their power and wealth increase as they make laws that favor themselves, manipulate financial markets, and create monopolies that put more wealth into their pockets.

“Oligarchy” in monosyllables? How about: “small group who rule bad” or “bad rules by few men make chaos & ruin lives”.

Mass weapons of distraction We underestimate how often they’re used, even in the most mundane situations, it will veer us off course to lose focus, & the real issue at hand, who is to be accountable, won’t be faced. Oh look shiny object.

Definition of oligarchy, “government by the few, especially despotic power exercised by a small and privileged group for corrupt or selfish purposes.” I see comments assume oligarchy means to be ruled by the rich. No, let the definition be clear. It is to be ruled by a despotic few who rule badly.

The market is a construct. Don’t want from it. If they crash it & buy everything cheap, don’t help them manage it. Don’t be their police. Live & sow land without them knowing. No one will be their bouncers. No one wants to work for them. Feed & house each other on land they have no control. LandBack
