Michael Lockley @lagstonehall2.bsky.social · 22/09/2026Just noticed this starts at 9 with a soundtrack by Malcolm Arnold. 010
Michael Lockley @lagstonehall2.bsky.social · 08/09/2026I'm always happy to support Talking Pictures, despite the Ad breaks, which are not as numerous as ITV. I feel that they helped get me through the pandemic just after being widowed. The stand-out moment when they showed Raise the Titanic one Sunday evening. #thefilmcrowd #TPTV 010
Michael Lockley @lagstonehall2.bsky.social · 04/09/2026Oh no, not that stupid Albert Einstein impression. #thefilmcrowd 020

Michael Lockley @lagstonehall2.bsky.social · 22/08/2026I was hoping for Raise the Titanic. Although a previous winner of #niceSoundtrackShameAboutTheFilm , it was shown on @talkingpicturestv.bsky.social during the pandemic, and somehow cheered us all up with its preposterous storyline. 011
Reposted by Michael LockleyThe Film Crowd @thefilmcrowd.bsky.social · 21/08/2026The "and The American Way" part of that line isn't comics-original. It comes from the 1940's radio show, famous for pitting Supes against a very thinly disguised version of The KKK, among other things. So in that context, "The American Way" has more to do with twatting fascists. #TheFilmCrowd 1/2 171
Michael Lockley @lagstonehall2.bsky.social · 21/08/2026That's probably why so many remakes and other superhero movies just don't work. At its heart, Superman is a love story, and the two main stars are totally convincing. #thefilmcrowd 070
Michael Lockley @lagstonehall2.bsky.social · 21/08/2026When I was in the cinema, everyone audibly cringed when Superman mentioned "The American Way" #thefilmcrowd 061

Michael Lockley @lagstonehall2.bsky.social · 21/08/2026Once again, John Williams turns to the London Symphony Orchestra, as they start to establish themselves as a world class film music ensemble. #thefilmcrowd 050
Michael Lockley @lagstonehall2.bsky.social · 21/08/2026First saw Superman in 1979 on a first date with a lady called Catherine. If she sees this, I wish her well. #thefilmcrowd 051
Michael Lockley @lagstonehall2.bsky.social · 04/08/2026This was really very good indeed, a composer worth investigating. 000
Michael Lockley @lagstonehall2.bsky.social · 25/07/2026It did sound pretty good on the radio, very powerful performance, but with the lovely subtle nightingale. I did want to go and see this, but I haven't been too well of late and struggling with the heat. 010
Michael Lockley @lagstonehall2.bsky.social · 24/07/2026Sounded very good on my hifi system, must have been pretty spectacular there. 000
Michael Lockley @lagstonehall2.bsky.social · 18/07/2026I've just been doing some more estimations on this. I think 16 minutes takes you to about bar 456. Most of the score seems to be vaguely intact upto this point apart from 20 non-contiguous missing bars. There then follows 3 big gaps plus the missing coda - plenty of room for uncertainty. 010
Michael Lockley @lagstonehall2.bsky.social · 17/07/2026I'll see if I can get hold of a copy. According to the notes in the Rattle version, the gaps in missing score are small (ie in single figures), upto about bar 513, which I would suggest is close to that 16 minute mark. But it's the final Coda that doesn't really sound like Bruckner to me. 020
Michael Lockley @lagstonehall2.bsky.social · 17/07/2026Well that was better than the remake, but the latter was seen in a noisy Vue cinema. #thefilmcrowd ##bladerunner 030

Michael Lockley @lagstonehall2.bsky.social · 17/07/2026This film does have a reputation of being a bit of a mumblefest. #thefilmcrowd #bladerunner #mumbling 041

Michael Lockley @lagstonehall2.bsky.social · 17/07/2026I sometimes think it would be less controversial if they simply stopped short at the coda and finished there. I do like to hear what Bruckner's final thoughts were, though, so I'm definitely not against completions, and have seen the Rattle interpretation live. 140

Michael Lockley @lagstonehall2.bsky.social · 29/05/2026That's just about where I sat for last year's Mahler 3. The Hallé has historically had a good reputation with the 6th, particularly under Barbirolli. There was also a good performance a few decades ago, I think it was repeated in Bradford. Not sure of the conductor. 000
Michael Lockley @lagstonehall2.bsky.social · 26/05/2026I've been thinking about her recording of the 8th as I don't have the 1887 version . 020
Michael Lockley @lagstonehall2.bsky.social · 25/05/2026Well that's good, there needs to be more American interpretations of Bruckner's music and possibly other non European orchestras as well. Although I prefer the Klemperer edition of the 4th, I really appreciate the Ormandy/Philadelphia version. 100
Michael Lockley @lagstonehall2.bsky.social · 25/05/2026Sounds alright to me Gromit, though it's unlikely I'll add it to my collection. 040
Michael Lockley @lagstonehall2.bsky.social · 09/05/2026I think Britten was quite enthusiast beforehand, but changed his mind considerably when post production meddled with it, as you point out. The film has been shown occasionally on Talking Pictures TV along with Nightmail. 010
Michael Lockley @lagstonehall2.bsky.social · 04/05/2026Not sure if any of Star Wars was filmed in the Dales. Plenty in the Lakes though, courtesy of fellow school pupil David Tattersall, Cumbrian director of photography in some of the films. 010
