Too many people are normalizing this by continuing to talk largely uncritically about AI. I find it hard to care about all the things we can do with AI when the human cost is so high. I find it hard to ignore the direct ties to the current rise in fascism and and stripping away of workers' rights.

Heavy on the concerns about the purposes of "increased velocity". There's a lot of directionless productivity for productivity's sake happening as people completely throw what we've learned about building the right thing out the window. The tech machine is grinding people up and it's disgusting.

i think it should be a larger part of the calculus for LLMs in tech that the industry seems to be factoring in mass burnout as a necessary cost of "building the future." it rhymes with (but is obviously very different from) the way workers were fodder for the industrial revolution's "success".

Cowboy mugs are done! 🤠 There were some minor cracks in the cowboy hat lids because I didn't get them thin and even enough but I filled them in with glaze and they seem to be stable now. Will have to work on that when make these again.

AI mandates are inhumane, anti-worker, and anti-human.

Are all the folks regularly generating code with AI also joining the on-call rotation? Like everyone, all the C levels, VPs directors, managers, PMs, designers, etc? Taking full on-call shifts, resolving customer issues, doing incident investigations & on-call maintenance?

The amount of job postings using the term forward deployed engineer is massively gross to me. The war/imperialism associations are hard to ignore. Maybe let's not embrace this trend 🫠🙃

squeeze your employees for as much productivity as possible (all while cutting benefits, not giving raises, etc) to be good at business. You don't have to implement invasive, regressive surveillance to enforce AI use. And yet here we are, where it feels trendy to be evil and cruel.

Too many of y'all think anyone who isn't immediately on the AI bandwagon pledging uncritical allegience must be someone who doesn't know enough, isn't as smart as you, or is just having a knee jerk reaction. Couldn't be more wrong tbh. The way people have chosen to force AI to happen is

I'm currently learning to make lids for vessels on the pottery wheel. Today I threw a couple of cowboy hats to use as lids on some smiley face mugs 🤠

That's bad and you should feel bad. You didn't really contribute anything and you e made someone else's job harder. A big part of the problem is with the story we're being sold about AI. It doesn't exactly encourage thoughtful, responsible use imo.

Krista LaFentres (she/her) @lafentres.bsky.social · 27/07/2026
To be clear, I know there are thoughtful, responsible ways to use these tools but this isn't it and a lot of what I see and hear about falls into the irresponsible camp. Like if the first time a human being reads your PR is the when someone reviews it, you're dumping your work on someone else.

I'd genuinely prefer you tell me that you don't know or don't have time. I wouldn't be upset about this outcome and I'd find a different way to get the info I need. Aside from a number of other issues, there's a real alienating vibe to it, with a dash of let me Google that for you.

Whyyy are we doing this? If it wasn't worth the time for you to think about and write, then it isn't worth my time to read it. I'm interested in your thoughts specifically! Not what an LLM comes up with (which, again, I can just prompt on my own to get that info).

The AI brainrot is really eroding social interaction. If you respond to a question or start a conversation with some AI generated slop, I'm not reading that. I don't need you to prompt an LLM for me. I'm not reading nonsensical, poorly written, unvetted, generated slop documents. Please stop 😭

You're also taking opportunities away from the people you are supposed to be leading! That's not fair or good for anyone long term. If you wanna do the coding work, step down and take a different role. Otherwise, step up and get to work enabling your teams to do ambitious work.

Krista LaFentres (she/her) @lafentres.bsky.social · 24/07/2026
There's also a wild amount of toxic, unqualified people in charge of AI at a bunch of companies and I don't get it. Are the leadership teams out of touch with what's actually happening on the ground? Do they condone the toxic behavior? Are they not able to tell when these people are full of it?

Krista LaFentres (she/her) @lafentres.bsky.social · 24/07/2026
this work is often well outside of the planned work and it is unclear how it contributes to achieving goals. It is often unvetted. Tbh, most of it is slop as well, which means someone has to come clean up after the people doing this. This is work they won't get credit for and it is often stressful

And that's not even getting into the inherent issues with the power dynamics at play. People cannot give you honest critical feedback (on PRs or otherwise) when you have the power to fire them and people need jobs to survive. You're also creating an absurd amount of extra work for your teams and

The whole trend of folks in leadership coding all the time is really irritating to me too. In my opinion, if you're in leadership and you have time for this, you are almost certainly avoiding the hard work that you're supposed to be doing - vision, communication, enabling teams to execute, etc.

the already unequal, alienating parts of tech culture is incredibly disappointing and frustrating. You can't claim to care about these things and then make decisions that actively make these issues worse.

A three panel comic done in mostly a blue-purple ink. Frame 1: The artist, a tired person with their hair in a bun and a bag on their shoulder standing in the awning of a bus shelter. There's an ad on it that says "STOP HIRING HUMANS", above a woman whose face has been replace with the word "AI".
Frame 2: The bus comes, it's wrapped in an ad that also says "STOP HIRING HUMANS." The artist has a blank look.
Frame 3: A plane has now arrived above the bus and the human. It's carrying an ad banner that also says "STOP HIRING HUMANS".

have to want to be better and grapple with some difficult truths first. There are people at almost every company who care deeply and who have better solutions if leadership can listen and change. Things don't have to be so awful, inhumane, and sloppy.
