I love podcasts so much. I love learning things while I cook or fold laundry or ink comics. I love how they get me laughing while I'm on a walk. I love getting to hear perspectives from humans I'll never meet. I love that some podcasted stories have stuck with me just as much as my favorite books.

I love public speaking. Loved it as a kid, love it now. Talking through a microphone was easy even back when I was too shy to talk one-on-one. There were, however, three months of life when I despised public speaking: when I was required to take a public speaking class in college. It's that odd?

Of course we think humor can't be learned if no one's bothering to teach it. But like any other skill, it can be studied and mastered, both joke writing and other forms of humor. Why do we believe that people can get better at improv or stand up but that writers can't get better at being funny?

I've taught classes on how to make your manuscript funnier at conferences, and while researching for the lecture I found that *none* of the writing books at my large library branch had sections on humor. One screenwriting book had a single paragraph on farce. I was baffled.

Yesterday I listened to an old interview with some trad pub editors, and one of them insisted that writers can't learn to be funny. They believe that humor is an innate quality. That's a common take and natural to believe, but I couldn't disagree more! Writers, humor can absolutely be learned.
