Since I did do my PhD in cyanobacteria growth and treatment optimization modeling AND work in the water treatment industry, I’m gonna share my theory as to what’s happening here and how to fix it. People are focusing on the painted bottom of the pool increasing residual heat, and while that 1/19

I spotted five family bikes at a single junction this morning. Not an event or a photoshoot; just the school run in London🚲 Over 250,000 cars do the morning school run in LDN - our bike lanes & school streets are enabling families to choose better options. 🚲🚶‍♀️🛴👨‍🦽🤸‍♀️

I don’t know if it’s a surprise to anyone any more but this is apparently not a violation of community standards on Instagram these days.
A report response from instagram saying that they did not remove the content I reported. The content I reported is a swastika, made out of red, black and white dot emojis.

Just two months after this footpath was completely rebuilt and two new street trees added outside the Bromley-by-Bow Tesco someone has driven a truck over the soft, permeable tree pit surface, destroying it and a flagstone and possibly killing the tree.
Two street trees on a footpath. A clear tyre mark is visible as a severe depression across the tree pit. A flagstone has been split in half in line with the tyre mark on the exit side of the pit.Reverse view of the damaged street tree and footpath. There are yellow pips on the kerb indicating that driving and parking on this footpath is strictly forbidden.

I’m starting a thread for things making the bike lanes on my commute unusable or unsafe. Why? Because if it’s not consistently safe every time you try to use it, a bike lane won’t attract new riders who aren’t comfortable cycling in traffic. January 8th:
CS2 west bound at the Whitechapel markets. A burst pipe is spilling a small amount of water into a few metres of the cycle lane. Cones and tape have been used to section it off.Transition between C3 Embankment and C10 (old Q1) at the Strand. A large group of cyclists is heading off Waterloo bridge. A truck full of plastic barriers is parked in the intersection blocking the route to the cycleway. The safe options are to run the red light and go around the truck or use the footpath.CS2 at Stepney Green. It is raining and dark, the cycle lane has flooded up to the top of the kerb. The reflections and mud make it impossible to determine where the kerbs are.Another shot of the flooded eastbound CS2 at Stepney Green. A cyclist is riding past in the bus lane to avoid the water.

A reminder in the five years leading up to the construction of safe cycleways in 2015 with floating bus stops five people died cycling between Stratford and the City. In the ten years the cycleways have been open with safe floating bus stops there have been no deaths and is now safe for everyone

As a neuroscientist who studies urban stress, loud cars/motorcycles should be banned, or fined excessively until drivers reassess their need to broadcast their self esteem with unnecessary noise pollution. I don’t need to hear your car in my apartment.

I have told this story before, but bringing it here. This street has footway parking on both sides which gives 1 metre of walking space beyond the lines. But, if drivers obey the markings, you can't get a car up the middle. Because residents kept getting tickets, I was asked to look at it. 1/n
A blue car on a narrow road with cars parked on the footway both sides leaving little space on the footway for pedestrians. There are dotted lines on the footway to allow parking, but the cars are well beyond them.

“A new study of early separated lane projects in the U.S. across six cities finds a rise of ridership between 21% and 171% after the lanes were installed.” The pretty strong and convincing case for protected bike-lane networks in cities. In @fastcompany.com

Giving cyclists their own space results in some pretty big benefits beyond just a lack of dead cyclists.

Taking a moment to cogitate over language choices for killing a dog which seem more condemnatory than language used when a person is killed by a driver

Surely there’s a root cause of this anti-social behaviour and removing free bus passes will, at best, only move it somewhere else.

Years ago we had the mayor bike to school with my 6 year old, within the first :30 seconds they were almost hit by a driver on live TV. Every leader should be required to ride a bike (if able) with a 6 year old before they provide any direction on bike infrastructure.

The horrific Spanish floods should be a wake up call to politicians/planners - green water management needs to be at the heart of urban design. As well as reducing flood risk, our towns/cities would be so much nicer with rain gardens prioritised over parking spaces. inews.co.uk/news/world/s...
