Btw, if you're craving more boss fights like the ones in Onimusha but don't need all the busywork in between, Furi is a good place to go next. One of my faves of the last 20 years or so, and it's like six bucks on Steam atm store.steampowered.com/app/423230/F...

Also ironically, a surefire way to tell you're dealing with a SEGA Saturn is that they're very sensitive to sunlight

My feeling about Onimusha's difficulty is that it's not as hard as Sekiro, but the second playthrough (on Carnage) is harder than my second Sekiro playthrough. Maybe because Sekiro forces you to get really good on playthrough 1? Onimusha only forced me to get kind of good.

For what it's worth, they also softened the color-coding restriction for the Definitive Version—"wrong"-colored weapons cause damage but no hitstun. But I mean even in DMC3, you only ever had two melee weapons at a time, and many enemies required specific, restrictive protocols to fight.

Well, the assignment was to make something like a Hollywood adaptation of DMC and to embrace their own vision for the brand, so in a way, deviation was a mandate. I don't love the color-coding, but I don't think it hurt the variety as much as people say, especially relative to previous titles.

The narrative surrounding DmC (the reboot) within the Devil May Cry community seems to evolved to a majority view that the game is good "except for the story." That exact recipe is what makes it a Devil May Cry game!

Imagine if they did a proper AAA adaptation in RE Engine. Maybe once they're the only game company left.

Darkstalkers is tricky... Clearly there's a lot of love there, but it's hard to imagine successfully supporting a second fighting game with how much of an undertaking SF alone is. I'd love to see it repurposed as a different kind of game. BoF fans really ought to get something by now!

What dormant Capcom IP do you think is most well positioned for a revival? I feel like it's clearly Dino Crisis and I don't even care about Dino Crisis.

Like normally I would play until I either win or get absolutely tilted and have ruined my circadian rhythm for the next week, but my tolerance for his personality is so much lower than my tolerance for losing fights

A funny thing about the Ganryu fight in Onimusha is that his voice acting is so (deliberately) obnoxious that it forces me to tap out before I've stayed up too late.

Don Lee is: STOPPABLE. Luckily the obi that obscures the title also says the title.

I encourage anyone interested in becoming a translator for entertainment purposes to take a writing class, and/or read a book. The difference shows.

Mostly Onimusha is super fair and bullshitless, but I'm not a big fan of the style of boss fight that starts with two full minutes of tedious mob cleanup followed by a strong guy who kills you in two hits.

Thanks Jon, I do appreciate the outreach and the challenges you're facing. I don't mean to demonize LIC, it's just the reality of my customer experience that almost every purchase has been marred in some way. If KTP ever shows up I'd consider the standard edition of Shinya once it's out.

Lacquerware @lacquerware.bsky.social · 15/09/2026
Imo, launching limited-time backer campaigns while previous ones remain unproven puts pressure on the buyer to keep making leaps of faith with their wallet.

Lacquerware @lacquerware.bsky.social · 15/09/2026
I think it's just hard to keep putting money down up front when each order is accompanied by reliability concerns. Just as it was hard to commit to Kill the Past until Heterotopias was resolved, it's hard to commit to this while KTP is still a question mark.

Notably, the Grasshopper Manufacture book has been in licensing limbo for like two years, and even back when they announced it, something else I'd ordered was in distribution limbo, which made me hesitate long enough to miss the backer window for the fancy edition.

Lacquerware @lacquerware.bsky.social · 15/09/2026
Man…LIC certainly has my number, but there have been significant issues with five out of six orders I've placed with them in the past (namely damaged items and years-long delays with insufficient transparency imo). I started feeling like an idiot about four orders ago. I think I'm tapping out. :/

Since Onimusha already has time-traveling, they should do a crossover with DMC and have Musash face off with fellow swordboy-magichand Nero and fellow Japanophile Vergil. Onimusha is probably more popular than Jean Reno atm, so they should get him back as well

Isn't it awesome?! And yeah, it's funny that I have to keep reminding myself to slow down and simply press fewer buttons even though I've played through Sekiro like eight times and should know this.

Lacquerware @lacquerware.bsky.social · 14/09/2026
Sekiro fans love to parrot the phrase "Hesitation is defeat" as though it's the key to mastering the whole game, but a more helpful phrase for me would've been "Do less." It works for Onimusha as well!

I figured it was something like that, but it also seems weird to me that talent management would care about name order but not care about the high possibility of the talent being misidentified by anyone who sees the poster and doesn't already know who's who.
010
Lacquerware @lacquerware.bsky.social · 13/09/2026
Why is this such a common thing in movie posters? Why not match the name order to the composition of the photo, or vice versa?

The DHS just posted a vehemently racist image attacking Sikh Americans. This impacts all of us and we need to stand united and reject it.

I guess for really major updates like this it's nice to have a disc option, especially since a lot of people probably slept on the base game. It's just funny how things seem to have come full circle. We used to get screamed at by fans for having too MANY rereleases.

Lacquerware @lacquerware.bsky.social · 12/09/2026
DDDA1 was released as a disc with no add-on option for owners of the base game, seemingly because Capcom simply didn't know how to do DLC yet and hadn't planned for it. In 2013 that felt archaic and inexcusable.

Lacquerware @lacquerware.bsky.social · 12/09/2026
I know Sony is having a Moment, but it's pretty surreal to see that virtually every single comment on the Dark Arisen 2 trailer is people demanding that the DLC be delivered as a whole new disc. The people have spoken and they WANT Super Ultra Hyper Street Fighter II Turbo.

Did they patch Onimusha to make enemies more aggressive, or are all the complaints about them not being aggressive enough just based on the first few hours?

Say what you will about Twitter's machine translation feature, but it's definitely better than it used to be. 1) original Japanese tweet from 2018 2) current translation 3) 2018 translation by Bing lmao (Still, use humans please.)

I love Sekiro and it's clearly the leaner experience, making it really inviting to just run through in a couple sessions, but this game does make that game seem really high-strung. Everybody relax!

Am I crazy or has it recently become a Thing to use "of which" incorrectly? Like, "So-and-so starred in the 'Garfield' movie, of which he admitted wasn't his best work." What is "of" doing there? Tourism?
