This is great, but I fear the advent of auto-aim will deprive players of magic moments like this one (gif'd from an old tweet)

Don Lee is: STOPPABLE. Luckily the obi that obscures the title also says the title.

Why is this such a common thing in movie posters? Why not match the name order to the composition of the photo, or vice versa?

I know Sony is having a Moment, but it's pretty surreal to see that virtually every single comment on the Dark Arisen 2 trailer is people demanding that the DLC be delivered as a whole new disc. The people have spoken and they WANT Super Ultra Hyper Street Fighter II Turbo.

Say what you will about Twitter's machine translation feature, but it's definitely better than it used to be. 1) original Japanese tweet from 2018 2) current translation 3) 2018 translation by Bing lmao (Still, use humans please.)

Unfortunately the tape was covered in either dust or mold and I had to hand-clean it, which took about as long as the movie itself. But if physical media is all about better connecting with the work through deliberate ritual, I think I just made this tape my soulmate

I scored a pretty nice VCR on Marketplace and the guy threw in a copy of Nightmare 3: Dream Warriors (starring Dick Cavett)!

The prominent icon in Fargo is not a circle, but the giant Paul Bunyan statue. Maybe this was obvious to everyone else, but it only just occurred to me that Peter Stormare and Steve Buscemi are probably supposed to be analogous to Paul Bunyan and Babe. Still mulling this one over too…

No Country is back to nihilism with its coin toss idea. But the structure of the movie itself seems to participate in this flippancy by shrugging off its own central conflict. In fact, the entire plot is no more than a series of randos being in the right or wrong place at the right or wrong time.

Hudsucker is the opposite—a spoof of golden-age cinema where the good prevail and the bad are punished. Yet the movie is still a big circle. Except there's this vertical component—he keeps rising and falling up and down the tower. You might graph it as a wavy circle, or, y'know, a hula hoop.

You know, like Big Lebowski isn't just a story about a guy who happens to bowl—the entire movie is this big circle that ends exactly where it began. Nothing has been gained or lost. The Dude himself is as a bowling ball (which the movie literally shows you in a dream sequence).

Their movies usually feature some visually prominent icon that not only has thematic relevance, but I'm also pretty sure represents the "shape" of the story itself. Usually it's a variation on a circle. You know, for kids?

Been thinking about Coen Brothers movies and how many of them seem devised as variations on the Hero's Journey story template, often visually represented as a circle, but sometimes a spiral or a line graph with hills and vales…

Japanese PS1 game havers: Do you separate the games in normal cases from the ones in slightly taller ones, or do you integrate them and prioritize 50-sound order? I hate how this looks but it seems crazy to separate the cases by size when the sizes are random.

Never thought about it before, but today I started wondering if the "shishi" in shishito (as in the pepper) was "lion." Sure enough, apparently they're named for how the tips resemble a lion's punim. Tbh they kind of resemble a different animal's "to" also…

The final step was getting this cartridge adapter so the crappy LCD screen cart isn't gouging the Sega's cartridge slot with its stupid exposed screws. This also gives it some extra vertical clearance so you can actually SEE THE SCREEN

So, like any sensible person of the 21st century, I resort to plan B: buying a model 1 Sega CD to plug into that line-in port I made. I mean, look. They're very cool-looking. Especially those JPN models. This was never about practicality anyway.

Open everything back up, take a good long look at the logic board, and that's when I finally notice what looks like capacitor leakage. Judging by location, it's probably related to spindle function, and it's probably been the issue this whole time. Alas, battery stunt just fried a chip somewhere.

They actually sent me a replacement first, which also didn't work. THEN the refund. Then I bought a THIRD replacement laser (for <$40), which also didn't work. At this point I was starting to think the issue wasn't the lasers, but my almost complete lack of any relevant knowledge.

Lacquerware @lacquerware.bsky.social · 16/07/2026
I managed to install the "new" laser, which was clearly old and showed signs of slight corrosion, but alas, it still wasn't reading discs. Back and forth with the eBay seller, who, to their credit, did give me a full refund. In hindsight, I don't think the item was necessarily defective…😬

Alas, in my initial attempt to dismantle the laser assembly, I…tore the ribbon cable completely off…😬 This meant I was now committed to buying a replacement laser, which I did. For 60+ arghhh. But if it all worked out, it'd be worth it. Ogre You Asshole, guys!

Through a series of cords and adapters and the advent of this crappy LCD screen cartridge from Ali Express, this setup not only let me use the boombox to listen to streaming apps, but also the model 1 Sega Genesis, thanks to its stereo headphone jack. Behold, the Sega jukebox!
A boombox with a Sega Genesis plugged in. The Sega Genesis houses a cartridge with a built-in LCD screen, which in turn seats a copy of Gunstar Heroes.

At this point I was pretty pessimistic about salvaging the CD player, and this project sounded just barely within my reach as someone who technically "can" solder. So I tried it out, and to my surprise, it worked!

Here's the one I bought: the Panasonic RX-DT680. I picked it mainly based on aesthetic, but it's said to be one of the better boxes of the era, and the bass do be bassing. CD, two tape decks, radio.

A few years ago I got nostalgic for CDs, and I still had a pretty big collection of personal faves and keepsakes from Japan that may or may not even be streamable. My guitarist friend also gave me a giant box of 90s rock CDs.

Definitely one of those games that showcases the staggering leap in fidelity from the PS1 to PS2. Not only because it looks incredible, but it also runs incredibly and centers the whole experience around the advent of a real-time camera. It's pointedly doing what Resident Evil never could (on PS1).
