I won game one by swinging with Emrakul to trigger Fblthp's "draw two; if there are no cards in your library, you win the game" win condition. I won game two by activating Jace, Reality Sculptor's ultimate to wipe my opponent's library, then stunning their only creature. Magic: the Gathering 😎

In the end, I decided that I didn't want to strain the mana or introduce tapped lands (two of my four blue duals were triomes), so I left Ancestral at home. Maybe I'll switch it up for round three?

Okay, I may not have completed my single goal for today, which was also my single goal for yesterday, of "complete a rudimentary, playtest-ready prototype of this game," but I DID teach myself to create watercolor-esque renders of stock photos using Photoshop actions, theoretically for said game!

They're all still grey, but I plan to paint them using the same approach I did for my Corvus Cabal crow boys - a style developed by Ninjon that uses chaotic arrays of vivid contrast paint underpainting and then skips basecoating entirely, going straight to broad highlights over these rich tones.

Third trophy of the Modern Horizons flashback draft that went up this week, with this utterly ludicrous deck. I started with Endling and was immediately passed Mob into Yawgmoth, got passed a Plague Engineer in pack two, and put together so many goblin and zombie sacrifice synergies. Bananas.

Initially, I was really reluctant to pivot off blue artifacts midway through the draft, when my lane was clearly contested. But rakdos sacrifice was clearly what was being passed to me. So I made the pivot. And, uh... turns out Tolarian Academy and Carnage Interpreter are really good together.

Teach Concentrically: When you teach a game, you want to introduce the core tenets of the play experience, and then build upon that knowledge concentrically, so that every new piece of information feels easy to integrate but continues to expand upon a sense of complex interdependence that cannot be “collapsed” or “resolved” except perhaps through play.

Draft Strip Mine, recursion, and acceleration. Trophy every time. No Springheart Nantuko, no Fastbond/Zuran Orb, and some desperate filler cards... but otherwise this deck felt really good. I kicked a Sowing Mycospawn on turn two at one point!

Vintage Cube 🏆🏆🏆 I am pretty sure that I have trophied the last four times I drafted this archetype. My pack one, pick one was Malevolent Rumble, with a successful gambit to wheel Wasteland, and I just forced green from there. Force of Vigor and Haywire Mite as a sideboard package.

And while it's not particularly strong, my absolute favourite interaction with these decks is to animate a land with Badgermole Cub, bestow a Springheart Nantuko onto it, and then chain together land copy triggers. Each copy triggers landfall and pays half the cost of making another copy. Silly!

Last cube season, Boros aggro was my pick for easiest trophy in the vintage cube. But this season, in both the regular vintage cube and the No Holds Barred version, it's been Gruul land destruction/recursion. The lane is always open and it can crater most decks that aren't already winning by turn 3.

Turn one, on the play: Blackcleave Cliffs, Black Lotus, Chain of Smog targeting myself, discarding Atraxa and Oliphant, Exhume the Atraxa, draw into Mox Jet and Reanimate, bring back the Oliphant, pass with thirteen power on board and Entomb + Death ready for turn two. This felt glorious.

I trophied with Boros aggro, made those tweets, went to sleep, woke up, forced Boros aggro again, and immediately trophied again. This was a middling rendition of the archetype, but it had two of the cards I mentioned and also a piece of fast mana, and that's all it takes.
