The first message from the American College of Rheumatology (ACR) about the current political issues and their impact on our work
Currently, the ACR is:

1. Closely monitoring all new executive orders, as well as directives to organizations relevant to any ACR or ARP members' work.

2. Reviewing the current 40+ executive orders to identify the greatest threats to providing quality healthcare to patients and conducting meaningful rheumatology research. We are also tracking the legal challenges to some executive orders and which ones have been retracted, rescinded, or revised since their initial introduction.

3. Engaging policymakers on the ACR’s policy priorities, such as preserving the sanctity of the doctor/patient relationship, reducing barriers to access to care, addressing issues that cause disproportionate disease burden and suboptimal care and outcomes for patients, sustaining a robust rheumatology workforce and the sustainability of Medicare and Medicaid. Currently, our messaging to lawmakers also emphasizes the importance of data and evidence-based policymaking as well as broad access to public health information and guidance to address the health needs of the U.S. population.

4. Collaborating with other medical societies to amplify the healthcare community's voice. The ACR recently joined over 300 organizations via the Ad Hoc Group for Medical Research Coalition (a group facilitated by the Association of American Medical Colleges) in writing a letter to remind Congress that investment in medical research in rheumatology and other chronic illnesses should remain a national priority. Collectively, we asked for $48.9B in funding for NIH for FY 2025.
