So uh, is Betelgeuse going into another dimming? Too early to tell, but there are _signs_, the atmospheric layers are moving like crazy (see the gradients panel), just like before the Great Dimming. Keep observing and we'll see! Our Astronomer's Telegram: www.astronomerstelegram.org?read=18097

The actual manuscipt strongly suggests it must've been a TESS Object of Interest that didn't make one of the pipeline cuts. And an AI can scrape together an (apparently very AI-overengineered) method to find planets from papers and github. But so can an astro undergrad. zenodo.org/records/2296...

I'm both happy and concerned about young people who want to do this job as we're expected to do (use our own brains to learn, think and write) instead of just letting AI steamroll science.

Chatted with a grad student at a conference and someone at the table quipped that she should just let an LLM write up her thesis (she's expected to write her papers up in our native language). She answered "no, I'd like to think that I still have a spine".

Killed. NSF’s SBE was killed, in violation of law. The President does not have the power to choose to kill programs at a whim by defunding them. The imperial presidency was a mistake and we are in a separation of powers constitutional crisis.

I this case I prefer what ERC does: submission is more like a save button, you can edit and update your proposal until the deadline but don't expect an extension just b/c you left submission for the last five minutes.

On point B, the NASA Exoplanet Archive typically serves ~10-20TB of data per month. In July it jumped to 70TB. In August it jumped to 600TB. So either our user base organically grew *30x* in two months (... unlikely), OR the bots have taken over already.

My first thought when looking at this: very cool, but what planet is it? It's the Earth🤦‍♀️ Why does the Earth look smooth and featureless, other than the auroral ring? It's because Smile is an ultraviolet telescope, and Earth's atmosphere is opaque at ultraviolet wavelengths shorter than ~300 nm.

Phil, if you want to write _even more_ about Betelgeuse, we put this preprint up recently: arxiv.org/abs/2608.11672 We've been a bit puzzled by the large flux (and mass) Miguel found, so Jared took the charge and made a model that includes Betel-light reflected by a bow shock around the companion.

Disco in the Dust: Reflected light at the bow shock around Betelgeuse's companion explains its observed luminosity
Recent detections of $α$ Orionis B, the putative companion to Betelgeuse, have been reported using multiple instruments and techniques. These include, most recently, a $>6σ$ detection using VLT/SPHERE...

That light will bounce off anything nearby, including the bow shock of a companion yeeting around at supersonic speeds. So we claim that the image captured by @astromiguelm.bsky.social and the @eso.org VLT actually mostly shows the bow shock in front of Buddy scattering the light of Betelgeuse.

László Molnár @lacalaca85.bsky.social · 13/08/2026
We think that the inferred high mass (up to 3 M_Sun) is just a trick of the lights: the companion is there, but its smaller (as we said), otherwise it would've been detectable in our our Hubble far-UV observations. But there's another light source nearby: Betelgeuse.
