Zathras is used to being beast of burden to other peoples needs... very sad life... probably have very sad death... but, at least there is symmetry!

"Now we're cooking!" "Let 'em cook." "We are so cooked." It seems 'cook' has been going to therapy lately, working on itself, and has developed quite the emotional range.

I wanted to practice #miniaturepainting weathered heavy armor and also practice painting faces. So next up in the to-be-painted queue: Who would win in a fight? Four angry adjunct professors with e-mag zappers or one vry stompy boy? #Corvusbelli #Infinity #miniatures
Four primed but mostly unpainted miniatures from Corvus Belli's Infinity Haqqislam faction. They are two men on the left and two women on the right. They look irregular, with loincloths, some with sunglasses, some with scarves. They all have big bapacks. The two on the outside carry four-pronged radar dish-looking guns and the two in the middle carry chain rifles.A TAG from Corvus Belli's Ariadna faction. It is a very large bipedal chicken-walker robot with what looks like loose tank treads attached to its legs for extra protection. A massive turret with an HMG hangs from the cockpit, and two ridiculously large missile launchers are mounted at what might be shoulder level. It is likewise primed but mostly unpainted.

I enjoyed painting some #CorvusBelli #Miniatures from the Kosmoflot faction. I got some much-needed practice painting faces and trying to put grain texture on their steel armor. I've still never played more than one game of #Infinity but this is the start of my fourth faction for it.
Four miniatures on bronze-colored tech bases. The left and right most are tractor bots with a single manipulator arm and a boxy spotlight head. The inner left figure is a sturdy man with a grey beard and blond mowhawk and TOO MANY pockets. The inner right figure wears a jacket large enough to conceal something menacing, chunky boots, and a cap with a headset. She carries and uzi.Three miniatures on bronze-colored tech bases. They all wear similar outfits: fatigue trousers. gray jackets with orange pin-stripes and chunky metal plates. They also sport a little cap that in my opinion makes them look like deadly flight attendants.

Today I learned two very important facts: 1. You can airfry frozen gyoza. 2. Dipping sauce can go bad when you let it sit on your shelf for several years.

Trying my hand at some #CorvusBelli #Infinity remotes. Good chance to practice edge highlighting, which I don't quite have down but I feel better about than I used to. #miniatures #miniaturepainting
Three miniatures on desert bases. The right and left are quadrupeds on legs that end in spikes with scorpion-looking heads and wing-like panels on the rear. The left has a combi-rifle, the right has a missile launcher. In the middle is a Nasmat remote, a diminutive humanoid robot with a wide, almost cobra-like head. They have sand-yellow colored accents. Two quadruped robot miniatures on scenic bases showing an urban street. They are red with gray and olive accents. The one on the left has a combi-rifle, while the one on the right has a heavy machinegun. They are vaguely beetle-ish.Two miniature quadruped Zond robots on scenic bases. These are built to resemble the slab bulkheads of an unfinished orbital construction. They have dark blue paint with yellow accents. The one on the left has a combi-rifle while the one on the right has a missile launcher.

Life is an endless stream of frustration from the dumbest people imaginable, puffed up to think they're great just because they know how to be loud. But I taught a poetry class today and the students went further with it than I asked them to, so I say I did good and I get to put my feet up.

Not the most important aspect of any of this, but I keep thinking that if writing an essay is for you a punishment serious enough to be merited for criminal acts, you never really had a "promising" future. You're just a rich dipshit that the system was built to lift up.

While prepping lunches for the week I had the thought I could make a game of it: Every week I could give myself a score calculated by the gap between the time I finish all my prep and the time I need to go to bed to get a good night's sleep. I could even keep a spreadsheet to see how I do over time.

The last few days I have been able to watch some adolescents trying to decorate a space, and it has been fascinating watching creativity, problem-solving, and iterative design process happening spontaneously and without any prompting on my part.

Basically every day now I experience something needlessly hurtful. Not even counting unintentional microaggressions, just full-on intentional rudeness that gets no one anywhere. It's genuinely shocking how long this was unheard of, only to become the new normal in only the last two years.

AP Stylebook warns against anthropomorphizing AI systems: “Avoid language that gives them human characteristics… Instead, explain what a system does, how well it performs, who built it and who could be affected by it.”
APStylebook @APStylebook

Artificial intelligence systems do not think, feel, want or understand. Avoid language that gives them human characteristics. This is called anthropomorphizing, when we ascribe human traits, emotions or behaviors to non-human things, such as animals or inanimate objects.
Instead, explain what a system does, how well it performs, who built it and who could be affected by it.

A still from the TV show Babylon 5. Under a stark red light with the background completely obscured in shadow, an alien with intense red eyes, a furrowed and spotted brow, and a grave frown warns of an ancient enemy stirring once again in forgotten places.

Was it great planning? Or were they making it up as they went along and got lucky? The eternal question of 90s era TV. In season 1, everyone talks about how they expect B5 to fail its mission. It's only about halfway though the season that they start floating hints about B1-B4 being lost.

Things in my teaching situation are getting really difficult. But today I was able to use the complaint tablet to Ea-nāṣir as an argument for why writing is valuable and worth making an effort to learn, so I think I can make it one day more at least.
A very famous, even memetic clay tablet with cuneiform writing complaining about a bad sale that almost 4000 years later is still extremely relatable.

You know this is the stupidest timeline because the AI debate became: "No one asked us to recklessly make an AI but we did and now you have to make us stop before we destroy the world!" vs. "We have to make an AI that destroys the world because otherwise China will destroy the world before us!"

At the risk of fixating on a pop-culture property that the money-holders would say is irrelevant... ...one of the things I really enjoy about the first season of Babylon 5 is how much of a deal they make about how ridiculous the whole setting of the show seems at the outset.

S1 of Babylon 5 had some rough episodes, but "Born to the Purple" had great bits. It had emotionally vulnerable Londo. It had "moon-faced assassin of joy". It had Vir distracted by a video game. It had... ...it had "scan-the-sector" and "Quark-face". ...So they were still working stuff out, OK?
A still from the TV show Babylon 5. Two actors playing Centauri stand holding a bouquet of flowers with fairy lights in them. The male, Londo, is dressed in a gaudy purple and gold military-esque uniform and has hair that can best be described as a sideways mohawk. The female, Adira, wears a jacket over a fancy dress. Her head is shaven except for a pony tail and convincingly portrays delight at the obviously fake flower prop.

A lot of the things that make me a better language teacher I learned from watching people run tabletop rpg games really well. It's a conundrum though, because there is an expectation that classrooms are srs buisness, and a lot of the things that make TTRPGs good seem superficially inefficient.

What’s your favourite Bible verse? Wrong answers only.
Elmoth, and there suddenly he heard the song of nightingales. Then an enchantment fell on him, and he stood still; and afar off beyond the voices of the lómelindi he heard the voice of Melian, and it filled all his heart with wonder and desire. He forgot then utterly all his people and all the purposes of his mind, and following the birds under the shadow of the trees he passed deep into Nan Elmoth and was lost. But he came at last to a glade open to the stars, and there Melian stood; and out of the darkness he looked at her, and the light of Aman was in her face. She spoke no word; but being filled with love Elwë came to her and took her hand, and straightway a spell was laid on him so that they stood thus while long years were measured by the wheeling stars above them; and the trees of Nan Elmoth grew tall and dark before they spoke any word. ” -- J. R. R. Tolkien: The Silmarillion, Chapter 4: Of Thingol and Melian

Speaking of meaningless etymologies, the fish halibut's name comes from Old English "halig" (holy) + "butte" (flat fish). Only that "butte" comes from the PIE root *bhau which meant "thick end" but also "to strike". It is possible this is where out anatomical "butt" comes from.

Techbros seem to love Tolkien, so here's an analogy to help you understand what genAl is.
GenAl is The One Ring. You think your use is justified, b/c you don't have evil in your heart.
But it came from evil, it is intended for evil purpose, & anything you do with it will be twisted to that end.

Not just that but Tolkien also said, "Evil cannot create anything new, it can only corrupt and ruin what good forces have invented or made."
Sound familiar?

Just now
The analogy of the One Ring for GenAl is quite powerful, especially when you consider how it seduces users with the promise of easy power. That quote about evil being unable to create anything new feels particularly relevant to the way these models remix existing human art. It really makes you wonder if we're trading our creative soul for a shortcut.
