Oh honey, this is a safe space where no one has to justify their hatred of Iowa

I once went on a bowl game tour sponsored by my u’s alumni association. It was a great time but I was astounded when they put our buses to the game in the same kind of police escort situation. I hope/assume the tour paid for police time, but how to justify the inconvenience for other drivers?

And I hope people understand that we can’t just optimistically hope that research institutions will step up and find the internal funding to continue defunded work. Maybe they could if it were one thing, but all kinds of programs are being defunded. Too many things need shoring up/support

…can send the human brain in the wrong direction. We are flawed decision-makers at times. I got to thinking about this because of the onion article joking about political campaigns finding a way to fumble things in October And I’m so glad I don’t work in campaigning.

So I talked about it with my boss, how to walk people through it so they’d not read to much into the data, etc. Endgame: Just stop producing the graph. I balked at this. I was a data person, and now I’m supposed to produce less data? But that was the answer. Even accurately collected data…

It all came down to one graph, all the numbers were accurate, but it turns out March was when the trend would get wonky. We’d think we could tell what it forecast and it rattled our confidence every time so we’d do a corrective measure that would prove to be the wrong call. It was killing me.

I don’t know if this could apply to politics, but here’s some work lore. Used to be my job to produce weekly reports to help a committee forecast an outcome. Every March, we’d get nervous, change course, and months later we would be cleaning up the mess because we made the wrong call. I realized

But you forgot something. There’s a person whose job it is to craft little teasers in emails. The blurbs that gets people to click through and read the article. And that person had an idea…. That’s how you awaken to the email “Balloons, Cotton Candy, and Excitement as Circus Comes to Town!”

Less hateful than my name suggests @kzannarbor.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
And to your satisfaction, this year, your argument prevails. You see the article go up the circus chain for approvals and in every version balloons are not in the headline, balloons are not in the opening paragraphs, you may have finally moved the discourse to other topics.

As a trustee it can be challenging to connect with students, who seem to wonder why these weird old people are clogging the lunch flow the dining hall. Last night we attended a social with student leaders, and I don’t know what the President told them but they were all over us. So fun.

It would be so wild if a generous billionaire giving a 10-figure gift to a big university simultaneously dropped an 8-figure gift on an unsuspecting small college on a lark. MacKenzie Scott makes it look super fun, fellas. Contact me for small college ideas, my DMs are open

Every so often I’ll read an opinion suggesting a DOGE-like solution (“fire half the administrators”) and I think the ensuing chaos would be the basis for a wildly funny miniseries. Everyone on campus having the day they voted for, I suppose.

Of course this post may feel more predictable than insightful given that I am a member of this much-maligned administrative bloat. I’ll own it. But I’m also engaged as someone who tracks cost containment on my campus—and I’m a college trustee. #HigherEducation

I can’t say I 100% agree with their interpretation of post-Covid hiring as “a revealing example” of routine, reflexive snapback after hiring freezes. I remember it as a distinctive period. Staff were exhausted. Students were widely reported to be “different,” with more support needed.

I don’t have a problem taking a hard look at how many staff a campus has added. But how much faculty time is appropriate to allocate to the work that people want to continue? Outreach, disability navigation, critical incident management, holistic admissions, etc. Giving it up is a culture shift.

My kid has started saying “good night Mary Ellen” to me and I of course whip back “good night John Boy” like nobody’s business, but he doesn’t know where he picked it up. Of course it had to be online but who or what in his online sphere would know about or reference the Waltons?

This isn’t that weird unless you know what a picky eater I was, but I cheerfully ate braunschweiger sandwiches (with Miracle whip, mmmm). Honestly I’m not sure I could eat it now.

I don’t share their view and think they probably have their head in the sand over policies that benefit them. But so much of what govt visibly does must seem remote when you live on a dirt road 20 miles from the library, fire dept, parks, social services, etc

I know people are snarky about the Texas rancher saying this is the first time in his life an issue came up that he thought really affected him. But honestly, people who farm/ranch in remote areas are people I can forgive for their disengagement and preference for small government.

I read it at least a decade later than my peers & regrettably it didn’t wow me like it had my pals who had loved it for years. I surmise it was because his tone and absurdity had been so influential (and therefore imitated a lot) by the time I read it. Today’s kids would be in a similar boat.

At a restaurant tonight one of the waitstaff met my eye, smiled, and waved in cheerful recognition. I don’t know her but gave a little flummoxed wave back. Then it hit me: we had this same exchange last time I came in two months back. No idea what other patron she thinks I am.
