I am the only heterosexual cisgender iOS developer. This is my story.

Too bad your favorite player and childhood hero, Mitchell Robinson, won't be there.

I've gotta be honest: I had never heard of the Kennedy Center before. Can't really get up for it.

You don't get to pretend to have anything to do with that side of New York baseball. I reject the premise of your insult.

Agents haven't broached smart home automation for consumers at all, yet, so that is another wave of hardware competition and desirable compute that is already baked in. Until every processor in your home is operating under 100% load, we are nowhere near the top of the curve of where we are going.

The main thing that stands out to me is that they proactively suggest what they can do. I think they exist to solve the problem of most folks being unable to conceptualize their tasks into workflows.

Dots, Muse, Grok Bot, etc are the latest step in this phenomenon. The more autonomy that agents get, the more value and use we will grind out of all of the world's compute. We will look back on shipping M5 chips that sat idle in iPads watching YouTube and wonder how anyone got away with it.

We won't get relief from a computer parts supply crunch, even with historic buildout, until AI hits a wall for years and we stop coming up with new economically disruptive uses for compute. The shape of the graph of the price of GPUs and memory looks like the shape of Anthropic and OpenAI's revenue.

Admittedly, every time this happens my first reaction is, "ugh, can I just leave it?" And the answer is always "no," because if my dog ever got lost I would want the first nice person to rescue him. Although… the data seems to suggest that people that lose dogs don't like them.

Guess we don't need to talk about AGI anymore.

I just rescued my fourth lost dog, on a walk. Four-out-of-four owners have never seemed relieved or excited or offered thanks.

Jensen Huang is the most explicable man in the world. He just wants to sell more GPUs.

I misunderstood what you said. Reading it again: I would only talk about it if I somehow knew it for certain—a literal guarantee—because I would hate to encourage anyone to do something very risky and irreversible, like, well, liquidating their 401(k).

What are you shorting? Or is that not an example, and you're talking about the same thing as the Citrini Research piece (ie broad 401k sell-off to pay for mortgages)?

Kyle Hughes @kylehugh.es · 30/09/2026
This is a good example of the realization I've had (and I'm not blaming you, I say stuff like this too): this isn't fun to say, it's bordering on morbid, and no one that "needs" to hear it is listening, so why are we saying it and what psychological damage are we doing to ourselves by stewing in it?

I have seen dozens of those videos of celebrities dancing down that hallway full of television production employees, but I have never seen a video of where they end up. Do they die?

My present demographic has a 3% chance of total-cause mortality in the next decade. I won't advocate for what you're saying, but if that number legitimately triples, people will do crazy things.

Kyle Hughes @kylehugh.es · 30/09/2026
I want people to stick around and flourish :( This is kind of what I'm getting at… we now only have the appetite to talk about generational, life-altering fallout for everyone in the blast radius. It eats at me.

I only, and have only for years, maybe a decade, used Siri to start workouts on my Watch. With watchOS 27 it now takes at least three times as long as it used to. A job well done. One more shovelful and she can be buried for good.

It does not bode well for what any of us will become, on either side of this experience.

Not putting this on you, but it is bizarre how the non-AI-rejecting-senior-software-engineering-microblogging discourse now has one single global topic: I am going to ruin the lives of so many people so close to me so quickly so that my life is not ruined. It's very dark, when I step back from it.

I don't disagree but I think, in our own desire to stake a claim in why we are safe, we say this too wantonly. This will be a traumatic financial experience happening on a massive scale at a heretofore unseen pace for so many people. Hurt people hurt people, and society will groan under the fallout.

Kyle Hughes @kylehugh.es · 30/09/2026
The trauma from that will be inflicted on them from that experience will be novel and profound.

I also think it has grave implications for social cohesion, surveillance, democracy, labor, and education. But I don't feel common ground with you, and can't take your calls for regulation or expulsion seriously, because you seem fixated on trying to dismiss it. I don't need you to like it.

I don't understand why it matters what "fans" are saying, I feel like it's taking your eye off the ball. I have used it for 100% of my professional programming for the last 11 months and have shipped the best software products of my life, operating in valuable enterprise environments.

I appreciate you expanding on all of this, but I still find a strange inconsistency. I don't see a lot of people talking about the grand reliability, just that it can be made to do necessary labor, which must have some relevance to its TAM. e.g. zero-days against Oracle PeopleSoft to hack the FBI

My book for vacation is going to be Silence of the Lambs. I have no exposure to the movie (too scary) or Hannibal at all. I think it'll be a good page-turner. I'm finishing up Between Two Fires and I hate it. It's a dumb monster-of-the-week A-to-B-to-C predictable edgy video game romp. Blagh.

You sure trust, and don't trust, the companies, and regard as extremely potent, and disregard as extremely impotent, the technology, at a very high frequency.

I am tired of having the antibodies to ward off modern horrors of the mind. I want to get old already and succumb to things of which I cannot conceive.

The modern education system mostly exists to prepare people for office work, so a bit more societal realignment will be necessary. Education to what end?

Sir, this is a public trail. (I think signs like this do more to permanently pollute public scenery than the crimes they denounce.)
A sign, posted from someone’s backyard facing a public walking trail, that says:

Want to start yoga? Start by bending over and picking up your DOG SHIT known as the downward dog position then put it in a bin!

Unlike MySpace, agents will get better at suggesting how they should be used, which should accelerate adoption. Or maybe they are forever rarely actively used, but are evermore proactive and useful.

Microblogging social media is a joyless void because the main demographic is now in or near middle age. 15 years ago that was not the case. I think that sums it all up.

Last time I went on vacation I invented the concept of "carrying a small paperback book everywhere," and it happened to be "There Is No Antimemetics Division," which became my favorite book, and I fondly remember that experience. I am going to try to recapture this magic soon. A lot to live up to.

That is more compelling to me than the energy bit. Discussing austerity around accessibility is fraught.
