Ghosts and spirits are one of my favorite horror baddies, if only because there's so few defenses against them! They appear when then want. They're intangible when they want. They communicate when they want. There are rules, but you don't know them. They're hungry, angry, evil, desperate, unknowable, implacable, unpunchable forces! And you write them so deliciously well.

From the incredible atmosphere--the wet and the rust and the silence and the dark--to the suspense!! With the ink-bleeding talismans and the failing lights and the wet foot prints beyond the salt ring??? Oh lord, i'm spooked just remembering the tension you built! AND THE JUMP SCARES!! "Comment as Kyabetsu: I adore this fic! It warms me every time I re-read it. Your Raphael's voice is so very, very clear. His brash confidence, his deep frustration, his gruff protective nature, and his self-recriminations are all on display in your fic. He's glorious.

And how you write his family understanding him! Just as surely as Raphael knows that Leo is beating himself up for not being perfect, Leo knows that when Raph kicks him and calls him an asshole, he's just worried. Leo and Donnie know he won't be completely honest about his wounds. All three of his brothers know he'll fight them about endangering themselves to rescue him. And even Casey! His whole crew knows that while he might not say 'thank you' for the rescue or 'i love you guys' on the way home, when he lets them fuss over him, when he lets them chide him, when he lets them decide what's best without putting up a fight, that's practically the same thing in Raph language. This fic reads like the *best* kind of TMNT comic. I can practically see the page layouts: gutters and spot blacks and glistening white foam on the incoming choppy water. The first time I read this fic it was still in progress, and it felt like I was holding my breath along with Raphael. OMG. I still get chills re-reading it! Chills from the suspense, of course, but also from the cold rain and the November tides. (Also from the wet rats. UGH! Nobody wants wet rats. And that close to the water front, those were probably big-ass wharf rats, too. aaaaaa.) That the rest of the clan shows up and saves the day is such a relief. I cannot begin to explain all the way these turtles' love & communication speaks to my soul. You write their depth of feeling for one another with such a profound purity, it borders on holy. That it's all tied to an exploration of self-acceptance as non-humans, the acknowledgement that mutants have to make their own rules, & the decoupling of sexuality from the drive for interconnectedness & care, is brilliant in ways that bring me back to this fiction again & again. Asexuality is rarely so intimately explored. AND This fic isn't all introspection! There's also the extreme contrast of the turtles' love for each other with the violence of the sex-trafficking rings. "Comment as Kyabetsu: I've had this fic in my bookmarks for yonks, and every time I stumble over it again, I have to stop and re-read it. Bayverse characters rarely get this kind of close treatment. This is certainly the first time I've seen April's boss, Bernadette in a fic! You flesh out her inner life so completely. Learning that she's just as hard on herself as she is on her newsroom, I find myself forgiving her for her brusque treatment of April and her crazy-talk of turtles. Seeing her put her money where her mouth is--going right up to the edge of the platform of a runaway train?! She's brave! Seeing her keep her wits about her when she's trapped under 15 tons of station and 300lbs of mutant turtle? She's steady under pressure! Seeing her slowly trauma-bond with a heroic and genuine young man? I fall in love with her. Watching her mentally adopt Donatello???? My heart explodes! She comforts him. She supports him (with bricks). She reassures him with her (not-quite) last breath. And even when the dust has cleared... she guards the family he loves. Thank you for introducing her to me. "Comment as Kyabetsu: On the umpteen-billionth re-read of this delightful apocalyptic romp, I realized I'd never left a comment! I ADORE this fic. It's such a bright future, even with the world falling apart around the 2012!crew. It's full of hope. It's brief, but potent. It's wistful, but silly. It's sassy, quippy, and intelligent--a perfect match for Donatello's cynical but earnest POV. And the couple! Apritello told in peeks through a keyhole. Tiny vignettes of reasons for them to fall in love with each other, over and over again. The bee, the moview, the personalized gun, the trauma-bonding, the choosing each other and choosing hope every time. It makes me fall in love with them, too. (Plus, Raph and Casey are perfect.) --Kya <3
