“Waaaaaah!” Ellie exclaimed as she spotted the colorful boxes and bags they placed by the coffee table. “Wed!”

“Woah hey, you can’t choose a gift already!” Mikey exclaimed. “Don’t you want the orange one instead? Orange is the best color!”

“Heh, think she disagrees.” Raph replied. “Clearly she knows da best one’s red.”

Mikey blew a raspberry at him before turning back to Ellie. “Then you can’t be in the super bus anymore. Shoo, shoo!”

Ellie eagerly jumped down without a second thought. She ran to the biggest box around, slapping her hands over it.

“Wed!” She said.

“That’s… yellow, sweetheart.” April informed her.

“Oooh…” Ellie replied, her eyes drifting back onto the box. “Well… We… Yee…”

“Yel-low.” April repeated slower.

Ellie watched her mouth for a bit as she repeated it a few more times. Then she returned towards the gift.

“Wee-ell…oh.” She tried. The moment after, her hands were pulling on the gift as she gave up on naming it, ripping the paper out. “To-ee!” She giggled.

“Ah, see? It wasn’t even red.” Mikey huffed. “Yellow is closer to orange. Close enough.”

“Tsh, whatever.” Raph responded with an eye roll. “It ain’t orange either.”

Ellie paused with a gasp. Adam could almost see the cogs turn in her heads as she considered it. After a few seconds, she lifted her head, staring at the guests.

“Apple, Casee, Heather!” She decided.

“What? I can’t read stories!” Casey exclaimed.

“Why?” Raph asked. “Ya know how ta read.”

“Yeah but like, maybe I’m dysfunction, y’don’t know.”

“…Do you mean ‘dyslexic’?” Don asked.

“Ain’t that what I said?”

“No, you said ‘dysfunction’ which is fundamentally not the same word.”

“Whatever.”

Adam yawned, stretching as he made his way to his bedroom. His arm was suddenly yanked, a door closing behind him. Reflexes kicked in, and he shoved the aggressor away. A three fingered hand stopped him from growling, and he paused.

Three fingers?

“Shh…” Raph hushed him. He was quietly standing in his barely lit room. “Remember this?” He asked him.

He was holding the original rubber mask Mikey loved so much, its hollow eyes looking even creepier in the dull of the room.

“I got an idea fer it.” Raph told him. There was a glint in his eyes that shone in the semi-darkness. “Somethin’ that’ll make sure he ain’t ever wanna prank us with it ‘gain. You in?”

Adam tilted his head unsurely. “What idea?” He asked.

“Whaaaaat is going on here?” Leo asked, his eyes crooked at the scene he noticed upon leaving the dojo.

“Nothing! Adam just… won’t… let me go!” Mikey grouched with huffs of effort. “Come on, Leo, get him to let go of me already, this isn’t funny anymore.”

Leo tilted his head. “And why is Adam holding you in the first place? That doesn’t sound like something he would do… unless you did something to him.”

“No reason.” Mikey quickly answered.

Leo’s eye ridge slowly raised. “Really?”

“Yes!” Mikey replied.

They stared at each other for a few seconds. Mikey looked away.

“Okay, I may have pulled a prank on him one too many times…” He finally admitted. “How was I supposed to know that the thirty seventh time would be what would get him to steal my mask? He didn’t do it the other thirty six times!”

“Huh uh. And then you’re surprised when Raph always defaults to slapping you at the first prank.” Leo said.

“Hey, don’t give Adam any ideas.” He replied. “Adam isn’t Raph, that’s why I pranked him thirty seven times.”

Still, he made his way back to the stairs. Just in case, he held the railing with both hands. At least, it seemed that Ellie had accepted her fate, as he couldn’t hear her cry anymore. He stopped by the playpen to check up on her.

Wait…

Where was she??

The boardbooks had been slid against the wall, and there were no babies anywhere inside the pen. Oh no…

“Weeeeehehehehe!”

He whipped around towards the sound. That was when he saw her, her bandana brown and dirty green and her smile covered in goo. She chirped at him, her hands slapping the mucky puddle water away.

“Daddy! Waaa!” She excitedly yelled.

Dammit!

Since when could she leave the playpen on her own? Why today of all days?

His sigh only made him cough as he picked her back up, holding her firmly away from himself. It didn’t stop him from getting his face covered in sewage by the time he reached the bathroom. He supposed she would get her swim after all, as he filled the bathtub to give her a proper clean. He held her bandana with two fingers, gently placing it inside the laundry basket. Gross.

Adam whined. He tossed and turned in his bed, unable to find a position that wouldn’t make his head feel pressured or his limbs throb.

He’d been trying to sleep for the past day, but because of that darn poison that beefy mafia guy had tossed on him, he was feeling way too sick to be able to rest for more than a few minutes at a time. His throat was sore and rough from all that coughing, and he couldn’t stop shaking and sweating. He turned to his other side with a strained sigh.

Another problem was that he was also bored out of his mind. He couldn’t get his eyes to stop burning him, so he couldn’t even read or watch anything, especially screens or anything making lights, and sounds felt exacerbated to him. He groaned, replacing his shell on the mattress before a coughing fit made him stop. He huffed.

Why oh why did he have to listen to Raph and go undercover like that? It was just asking for troubles to come their way. The last time he’d listened, everyone else had gotten sick from them staying out in a snowstorm, and now, it was him that was sick from poisoning. Talk about irony.

Adam hid a little more under his hoodie. This was a bad idea, he just knew it. He didn’t know how he’d been talked into doing this. He watched Raph in front of him, copying his pose. He never had to pretend to be a bad guy before. He wasn’t sure he was really nailing the style, arms crossed, head high and glasses covering his face. They’d had to steal some of the clothes from the other guys and he was feeling squeezed in their smaller size. At least, having come on motorcycles, he had his own hoodie, but he hoped that the extra layers wouldn’t stretch it. He liked that hoodie, it was black with a single tiny white flower on its chest, where the heart was. His head was covered by a dark beige tuque and a brown scarf, covering most of his face. He was wearing his own gloves, and if not for the extra long shirts and hoodies, his borrowed dark pants would be visibly too short, stopping by the end of his carapace.

But it was fine… ish. He just needed to stay behind and do like them. Hopefully, by the time the baddies would realize the subterfuge, it would be too late and Adam would be able to ditch the extra layers for sweet old nakedness.

“So, d’you think ‘bout what we suggested to ya?” Raph asked him.

Adam dodged the fist of an angry purple dragon, easily taking him out with a high kick before turning his way. What suggestion?

“Ya know… Ta go to da Battle Nexus ta try ‘n fight in da arena?” Raph specified before grunting as he dispatched two more thugs.

Oh. That.

Yeah…

They paused, eyeing the group of whining and moaning humans over the ground. Those humans were the easiest to beat, level one enemies as Mikey would put it. But then he had people like the foot soldiers, the elites, the EPF members… all the way to Bishop and Karai. He still didn’t know what type of enemies to expect from that Nexus. That was the one question the others couldn’t answer, since it was impossible to know in advance. But, considering the fights they’d had to put up with in the previous Nexus’ fights, there was very little chance that they would be easy. Which did not ease Adam’s nerves…

“Come on, let’s get outta there before da cops show up.” Raph told him.

They jumped to the rooftops, parkouring their way a few minutes away and stopping by the edge of an area in the shadows. The wind was strong but warm, the air humid and clouds covering the sky, sporadically letting the moon shine onto the city. Adam gazed at the lights from buildings and cars in a pattern that felt very inorganic to him and yet, so alive. He sighed.

“Don’t know yet.” He admitted. “Know you’re all working hard for it, and want to test my skills, but just…”

“…Yeah…” Raph understood. “Well, ya still got time ta choose. I hope ya’ll wanna come, but I get it if ya wanna stay here.”

He punched Adam’s shoulder, grinning at him.

“Whatever ya choose, I know it’ll be da right decision fer ya. So don’t sweat it, if ya ain’t ready ta come, then ya ain’t ready ta come. Simple as that. Will make it easier fer me.”

Adam responded with a wobbly smile. If only it was that simple…

“Heather!” Ellie exclaimed.

Adam waved at his crocodile friend from the kitchen while Ellie ran to greet the guest with all the speed of a toddler. Mikey giggled before going after her, and Adam finished adjusting the low heat on the stew he was going to let steam all night before joining them.

“Hey Leatherhead! What’s up?” Mikey asked him.

“Hello, my friends.” Leatherhead replied. “I do hope I am not bothering you?”

Adam shook his head. “Only prepping food for tomorrow. All done now.”

“But you missed the others, Don and Leo are on a junkyard run and Raph’s roller skating around the sewers.” Mikey added.

“That is alright.” Leatherhead told them.

He was interrupted when a tiny hand landed on his leg.

“Heather, loo! Dino!” Ellie told him, her dinosaur plushie in hand and held as high as she could.

Leatherhead smiled as he crouched in front of her. She paused, her eyes landing on his long tail, his scales, his long nose… She gasped, turning towards the others.

“Heather dino?” She asked. “Heather dino!”

Mikey chuckled. “He does kinda look like a dinosaur, doesn’t he?” He stated.

“Aw man! April and Casey left so quickly that I didn’t even have time to go steal their food!” Mikey whined while slouching over the couch. “I wanted to take the opportunity to get some extra snacks.”

Leo took a sip of his tea, unperturbed by his dramatic whine. “I think they finished those before leaving for the farm.” He informed him. “Since they only had a week in between to finish preparing for their birthday trip.”

“Laaaaaame.” Mikey replied. “Now what am I gonna eat for the next month?”

“Uh, maybe any of the meals you and Adam cook?” Don suggested, he and Raph sitting on the floor in front of the armchair.

“Yeah, not like we’re all out of food. Adam ‘lways makes more than ‘nough fer everyone.” Raph added.

“Don’t like my food anymore?” Adam asked, betrayed. He placed a hand on his saddened heart and Ellie stole his other one for herself.

“What??” Mikey realized as his head snapped upwards. “No no no, that’s not what I meant!”

“Can make other stuff if you want.” Adam insisted. “What do you not like?”

Mikey moaned. “I didn’t mean it like that. Of course I love your food!”

“You sure?” Adam asked.

“Yes! How can I not like it? It’s delicious!”

He jumped back, his legs bumping on the coffee table and his palm pressing on his chest. The bald human cackled while pointing at him with… Mikey’s voice?

Wait, the hand still had three green fingers…

“Haha! I finally got you!” The Human-Mikey exclaimed.

He pulled on the beige skin, making it stretch before flipping away from his real face.

Oh… What the shell was that thing? A mask?

Mikey snickered as he looked at his incredulous face. Adam picked the thing up, moving it around. It was a rubber mask of sorts that apparently fit all around the head. It pictured a bald looking guy, kinda really creepy to him, with large lips and hollow eyes to give place to the real ones. Shell, that thing had spooked him like nothing else. He didn’t expect seeing a human when all his other senses had told him it was only Mikey. Shell… His heart was still pounding in his chest. He placed a hand on his plastron with a deep breath. Mikey giggled.

“I didn’t think I’d ever be able to actually prank you.” He told him with the biggest grin. “I knew that mask was a good idea. As soon as I saw it in April’s new shipment, I just had to have it.”

He snatched the head, hovering it over his head.

“What’d you think? Fits me well, right?”

Adam shook his head. “Scary. Don’t like it.”

Mikey giggled. “Yeah, definitely keeping it then.”

Adam sighed. He could look forward to more pranks, then…

The basement was… not at all what he expected. The wood planks and the filth had given place to metallic surfaces and cables all around. The ceiling had a much more detailed lighting that was flickering on and off, and Adam had no doubt that this place was well isolated too as it felt much warmer and quieter on the inside. But what attracted his attention more were the designs along the large corridor. Dozens, no, hundreds of drawings had been haphazardly scattered and placed on top of each other. What looked like… a… Well, if Adam knew any better, he would say it kinda looked like… a mutant of some kind wearing an orange bandana, that was drawn on each of the papers. The farther they looked, the more the drawn creature seemed to change, its bandana becoming ears or feathers and the colors morphing. By the end, it looked nothing more than a monstrous blob of blackness with evil eyes and orange lines scattered around.

Adam made his way further in. The papers were eventually abandoned, the drawings made straight onto the walls with what looked like a mix of paint, sooth and- was that blood? Yes, dried blood on the walls. The back of the long room looked nothing more than pure darkness with two orange spots for eyes that seemed to stare into their souls. And right in front of them, Leo and Don were both stuck behind a forcefield of sorts.

“Whyyyyyy do the drawings look like me??” Mikey whispered. “Adam, why does it look like me??”

“Woah, this place is big.” Mikey noted.

Hidden behind a layer of vegetation was an old and decrepit farm, along with a house and further to the side, a small barn. Old crops were lazily growing alongside the small dirt road, surrounded by weeds and insects, making the front lawn look lush but abandoned. Pieces of wood were scattered around and an old swing creaked in the wind, clearly unusable by now.

As they made their way towards the two buildings, slowly and steadily, all they could hear were the sounds of the leaves shaking through the dark sky and the oppressive silence surrounding them. Adam sniffed the air, the smell of moss overtaking the aged walls and dust abundant. He tried to decipher the minute scents around the place, but it was hard to know exactly what was what with all the animals and critters that had passed through.

“Don’t know if abandoned.” He told the others. “Maybe… someone came in a few days ago?”

“Hmm…” Leo paused, examining their options.

“Is it me, or is this place like… super creepy?” Mikey asked, his body hunched over and his teeth gnawing on his nails. “Maybe we should like… not go there?”

“The next farm would be too far away.” April responded. “There’s only a few of them surrounded by miles of forests.”

“But come on, you can’t say this doesn’t look like the beginning of a horror movie!” Mikey argued. “Old, abandoned farmhouse, dark and broody sky, ominous wind… we’re practically on a movie set!”
