🏆 #ICSAPaperOfTheMonth Telomere shortening has long been considered a cause of cellular senescence. Fabrizio d'Adda and team now show telomeric DNA damage signalling is itself a causal driver of hematopoietic decline. www.nature.com/articles/s43... @nataging.nature.com

What happens to a macrophage that is infected for a long time? Senescence! Once we clear those senescent cells with senolytics, the bacterial burden drops. This is a new way to tackle infections without using antibiotics. Link in comment! #ICSAPaperOfTheMonth @edoardoscarpanti.bsky.social

In the #ICSAPaperOfTheMonth, the Passos and @adamsbioaging.bsky.social lab reveal how mitochondrial metabolism controls the SASP through epigenetic regulation. Targeting mitochondrial citrate transport reduces inflammation and improves healthspan in aged mice. Link 👉 www.nature.com/articles/s41...

Senescence isn't just aging, it can be fast and functional. New work from Valdivieso & Rozmarič @lbitrauma.bsky.social shows "aged" cells coordinate wound healing within hours of injury, challenging the classic view. Interview with the authors: www.cellsenescence.info/post/copy-of...

Our paper is out🎉 We show that clearing senescent cells after radiation exposure can improve tissue recovery and increase lifespan, but only when the timing is right. So glad to have worked alongside such brilliant scientists. #aging #senescence #cancer #mayo onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/...

Timing‐Dependent Clearance of p16‐Positive Cells Mitigates Radiation‐Induced Accelerated Aging
Genotoxic stress induces a progressive accelerated aging-like phenotype driven by the delayed accumulation of p16Ink4a-positive senescent cells. Selective clearance of these cells improves healthspan...

Congrats to Sara Kostrebic on earning her MSc! Her thesis 'Identifying Cellular Factors in Trauma-Induced Frailty,' explores how aging affects recovery from injury. She completed her work under the guidance of Karla Valdivieso @kvaldivieso.bsky.social, Mikolaj Ogrodnik, and Gordin Zupkovitz.

Guidelines for minimal information on cellular senescence experimentation in vivo
This primer introduces the “minimal information on cellular senescence experimentation in vivo” (MICSE) guidelines, which aim to address the challenges in identifying and characterizing senescent cells. It provides an overview of senescence markers in various systems and offers a practical toolset to enhance our understanding of cellular senescence in vivo.
