A new pope has been chosen. An American. Very significant given the threats from Washington. The first Pope Leo negotiated with Attila the Hun and turned him back from sacking Rome. I hope Pope Leo has the same fortitude for the bandit leaders today. Prayers and hope in a dark time.

Removing a black 4-star general at Secretary of Defense and replacing him with a white talk-show is the perfect example why DEI is essential. It's not about hiring unqualified minorities, it’s about foiling the majority's habit of hooking up under qualified mediocrities of their own caste.

US higher education had become a world-class sector, one of the greatest strengths of this country, even with the amount of work still to be done in making it more just and equitable. But a cabal of mediocre whites, out of pure spite and belligerent stupidity, have decided to choke it to death.

The fall of Fetterman has been disheartening, considering his political origins. I was skeptical of him when i first heard of some new jack coming into my hometown. I saw he genuinely opposed the deep corruption that had been there for decades, and thought he was a good dude after that. (1/x)

So if someone makes it sound to you like “pausing” funding for science isn’t a gosh darn EMERGENCY, they don’t understand the situation. Patients are losing access to life-saving clinical trials. Samples are melting as units run out of liquid nitrogen, and with no funding, it can’t be replaced.

We’re destroying knowledge that has required decades of careful effort to cultivate. Once it’s gone, it can’t be recovered. We’re driving brilliant folks out of science who won’t be coming back. The waste—of knowledge, training, effort, care, love—is sickening. Our loss here is incalculable.

I think some people hear “grants” and think that without them, scientists and government workers just have less stuff to play with at work. But grants fund salaries for students, academics, researchers, and people who work in all areas of public service. “Pausing” grants means people don’t eat.

Something being “difficult to read” isn’t a bad thing. Careful study, rereading, being challenged is key to reading — and to life. If you only want to “easy” art, maybe you don’t enjoy art at all so much as having your outlook supported and unchallenged.
