I feel like there’s something here for economics. I think you discovered the Jevons Paradox endgame, but because the end of efficiency gains in resource usage at a macroeconomic scale is never immediately apparent like it is with nacho cheese, it hasn’t really been defined yet.

I got a very timely February 1999 EGM that goes over the reception and sales of Ocarina of Time, which was very fascinating. It is also very of the time and has so many sexy pinup focused ads and “what are you, gay?” jokes that it almost seems like a parody of the era.
The cover of Electronic Gaming Monthly, February 1999. The featured game is Legacy of Kain Soul Reaver.

@gamehistoryorg.bsky.social has an amazing deal where you can get a random retro game magazine every month and support them at the same time. I present to you this month's 😬 Retro Game Magazine Moment from February 1999:
A letter of the month from EGM, February 1999. It reads from the reader:

"Japan: The Holy Land?
After reading the EGM Letters section of issue #113, I worry about the popular belief regarding Japanese video games. It seems many gamers are vehemently opposed to anything that is not Japanese when it comes to this industry.
Japan is treated as some sort of nirvana holy land. Has anyone played Sabre Marionette J or any of the hundreds of poor (read: God-awful) Japanese titles? I had the honor of speaking with a Japanese developer, and it's ironic to hear his opinions about gaming. He hates the way Japanese RPGs force the player to fight nonsensical battles over and over. He even strives to create a games with "...the quality of Alone in the Dark..." He also would never wish to create a game that would offend someone. Nudity, violence and all this supposed "sacrifice of morality for the sake of creativity" is really non-existent. Japanese developers are just as concern with "proper" content as anyone else. It's merely a cultural difference. What we see as offensive, a Japanese game does not.
So maybe next time when we all complain about the evil American companies ruining Japanese ports with changes that are usually made for the sake of cultural boundaries rather then [sic] sheet censorship, we could all be happy with the extra secrets, option [sic], characters and gameplay that usually come with our exclusive version.

The more interesting part of the editor reply:

"We should be thankful, however, for the cultural boundaries you speak of. Have you ever played Choaniki: Great Brother? Good God! Let's just say there's no way this horribly bad, very homosexual shooter would've been allowed in the U.S.! That's right, we said a homosexual shooter. Nothing wrong with being a homosexual shooter, mind you, but if you've seen this game, you'd understand why we say we're glad "cultural boundaries" have kept this game in Japan.

What are we allowed to do with the stems of your songs? Obviously I love peeking through how they are made, but can you use them to rearrange the songs or use them for other applications like other music games?

I have been alpha testing this for a while, and I can say that this is one of the most satisfying music games I have played in a while, at least in terms of how the moment to moment mechanics work. You can tell the custom engine was worth it when you're able to feel every single note you play.

We need some way to communicate, without words, "entering this area will require a lot of unrewarding tedium with no obvious waypoints or signs of progress". That should keep out humans basically forever.

I have been a big fan of the Gamesir Cyclone 2 just because it has triggers that can be microswitch clicky or hall effect, and for some reason all of my games seem to be perfectly split between needing either approach.

Most people think the solution to appearing apolitical for family entertainment venues is to simply never talk about controversial issues. Turns out the actual solution is to show support for every issue, all at once, including the ones that contradict each other.

I made this as a throwaway gag for my brother in law's birthday, as he really doesn't like melted cheese, specifically cheese that's like Velveeta. I think this might be one of the most tangibly unsettling things I have ever made. If art is supposed to make you feel things, this feels the most.
A blob of very wet, almost melting cheese with holes in it sits on a white plate, on a checkerboard table cloth. The message "Happy Birthday Mitch" made out of something bologna-like in the Bauhaus93 font sits embedded on top of the cheese.

I’m not referring to human effort in the sense of info collection, I’m referring to human effort in the context of art like the rest of the thread which is already difficult to distinguish from expression since any non-trivial change to an artistic work is going to be easy to argue as expression.

Even this can get fuzzy depending on the model. it hasn't been tested as far as I know, but if you use Adobe's Firefly model, your work is watermarked with it correctly, and it accidentally steals something, you are (supposedly) indemnified and its Adobe's problem instead of yours.

From a legal standpoint, it's the difference between "I did a lot of work using procedural elements and I know everything is mine" vs. "I made a lot of changes that I know are mine, on a canvas that might not be mine and I don't know for sure".

Kevin Turner @kturn.bsky.social · 19/06/2026
Human effort does matter and can assign copyright to GenAI derived works; currently the benchmark case I have seen collaged 18 different generations together, so the line is somewhere in there right now. The real danger is that you might end up stealing something and not knowing it.

Kevin Turner @kturn.bsky.social · 19/06/2026
To the point made in the video of bad faith publisher trying to get out of a contract, Speedtree and other procedural tools are made with the specific guarantee that you can use any of their output and its yours, while generative AI tools can't guarantee that.
1120
Kevin Turner @kturn.bsky.social · 19/06/2026
With procedural generation, you may not be able to say that you specifically created a thing, but you can affirmatively say it isn't someone else's work either. Generally it also isn't possible to use procedural tools in a way to make a (useful) finished product instantly without extra work.

I feel like there’s a meta isekai light novel somewhere in here where the protagonist keeps dying in horrific ways as a dog and starts to recognize that it’s because he’s constantly in one of these plots. The question is whether he accepts this cycle of death as necessary for the existence of others

That's currently how Forza Horizon 6 is going for me as well. I am far more endeared by my tiny three-wheeler with way too powerful of an engine that immediately loses traction as soon as it goes over 60 MPH.

It's simple: Have some internal, unclear logic as to what tracks can contribute to score and which ones can't, based on which tracks have already been activated. The correct solution is to activate the newly introduced track that's below every other track.
