#LarryCohen's IT'S ALIVE (1974) is a film I slept on when I first saw it as a teenager. Means so much more to me as a middle-aged parent. John P Ryan's performance as the mutant baby's father is *layered.* Such an awesome film w/a great Bernard Hermann score too.

Revisiting Bruce Malmuth's NIGHTHAWKS (1981) for the first time in c.25 years, + I'm struck by (a) how good it is, + (b) that Jamie Gillis is in it. Music substitutions and cuts have kept me away from various DVD/BD releases so far, but I recently bought the Shout Select disc. 'Tis good.

SAVAGE (Avi Nesher, 1996) is less accomplished (IMO) but still a fun ride. Another evil corpo plot (Titan, which makes VR games) has some echoes of ROBOCOP, though Gruner's interplay w/Jennifer Grant recalls Van Damme & Yancy Butler in HARD TARGET 4/

MARS (Jon Hess, 1997) is clearly aiming for a pastiche of #Verhoeven's TOTAL RECALL (w/some of OUTLAND thrown in) but feels very much in the spirit of #RobertHeinlein rather than #PKD. Evil corporations colonising MARS? Revenge plot? I'm in! 2/

Really enjoyed the two #OlivierGruner films that have popped up on @arrowplayer.bsky.social recently, Jon Hess' MARS (1997) and Avi Nesher's SAVAGE (1996). Two blasts from the past that I had almost forgotten about. 1/

Here, I’ve put the vintage #Fendograph pen next to a very similar modern art deco-style pen, the #Kaweco Brass Sport. This is a very good, sturdy pen that is a solid (pun intended) alternative for anyone looking for a similar aesthetic in a modern pen. End/

I’m not sure if the pen in Inferno is a button filler or a safety pen, though it seems to have a similar "blind cap" at the end of the barrel to my pen, which may suggest it's a button filler. 3/

I’ve finally tracked down a near-identical pen. It’s a #Fendograph with an Italian overlay (in 18 karat gold), most likely from Milan. My pen has a Greek key pattern and is a button filler rather than a safety pen (with a retractable nib), which I believe dates it to the 1930s 2/

Film and Fountain Pen Nerd Alert. INFERNO is one of my fave #DarioArgento films, and when I first watched the film in the 1980s I remember being struck by the vintage #FountainPen Rose (Irene Miracle) uses in the opening sequence. 1/

Rewatching #DavidCronenberg's CRASH (1996), I'm struck by the memory that when I saw this at the cinema, 30 years ago, I was good friends at university with a young woman who had bad facial scarring from a car accident that also killed her father. Strange what lingers in memory.

Though I would have loved to see something from Bogosian (or even Liev Schreiber, who has spoken eloquently about the play before) about the play, but hey-ho.

Really pleased with the new the new Kino Lorber Blu-ray release of Oliver Stone's TALK RADIO (1988). This has long been a favourite of mine, since encountering it on VHS c.1990. Massive upgrade over my old DVD. Extras are fine... 1/2

Starting a rewatch of #CRACKER. Stellar writing by #JimmyMcGovern and a superb performance from #RobbieColtrane. This one hits much differently when you revisit it as a 40-something with a family. Shame the home video releases are all compromised in one way or another.

Really need to dig out my collection of Philip K Dick's short stories, as I want to reread "Second Variety" and "Jon's World," and then rewatch Christian Duguay's adaptation, SCREAMERS (1995).

I have a tough time picking a favourite from Samuel Fuller’s body of work. However, White Dog (1982) is damn near the top of the list. #SamFuller #WhiteDog

Tonight's shenanigans. Superb film. Alan Sharp's script is as on-point as his scripts for NIGHT MOVES and ULZANA'S RAID (imo). Desperately needs a good BD or 4k (yes, please!) release. #TheLastRun #GeorgeCScott #RichardFleischer #AlanSharp

#ThisNightIllWatchYour VHS rip of Nigel Dick's PRIVATE INVESTIGATIONS (1987). Never seen this one before. Curiousity piqued by the soundtrack LP I keep seeing in my local record store. Co-scripted by #JohnDahl. Half an hour in and enjoying the heck out of it.

I'm kind of thinking that #AbelFerrara's superb #neonoir FEAR CITY (1984) is quite, um, poorly represented by the only two quotes from the film that the IMDb list for it... This from a film that has some superb lines (not these two) in its script.

I often think about that Arthur Miller quote that opens John Flynn's OUT FOR JUSTICE (1991) and hope that some of the excised footage featuring more of William Forsythe's performance turns up someday. "Anybody seen Richie," indeed.

Scarlet Street (Fritz Lang, 1945) Eddie G is pitiful and Dan Duryea is superbly sleazy in this wonderful noir from Lang. The desperation in Chris Cross’ bond with crook Kitty is palpable. The way this acts as the catalyst for his already miserable life to fall completely apart is wrenching.

La marge / The Streetwalker (Walerian Borowczyk, 1976) Sex is, and in fact all relationships are, transactional in this richly textured film from Borowczyk. La marge has all the attention to mise-en-scène that defines Borowczyk’s cinema, and a strong indictment of the way in which ...

House by the River (Fritz Lang, 1950) Haunting gothic noir in which a failed writer, with a sense of entitlement a mile wide, murders the housemaid after whom he has lusted, before dragging his innocent brother into the deadly mix. Beautifully directed, with a marvelous sense of place.

GOOD BOY (Ben Leonberg 2025). CInema visit on Saturday night. Really liked this. Remined me of GREYFRIARS BOBBY w/a supernatural twist. As a dog owner, its exploration of grief through lens of the human/dog relationship struck chords. Effects work is shonky but the film has heart.

SCREAM (Wes Craven 1996). Saw this at the cinema in '96. As a Craven fan, I always felt lukewarm to it, for a variety of reasons. However revisiting it on the big screen on Friday I was struck by how brutal it is + how well some of the humour lands when viewed w/a cinema audience.
