Malnourished, unable to finish growing feathers, unable to swim, unable to eat. The rehab team put Rocky on a diet of supplemental fish and fluids. Over weeks, his weight climbed. His new feathers came in and he made it. Rescue centers can save individuals, but not an species from a warming ocean.

In September 2024, a young African penguin arrived at a rehabilitation center in Mossel Bay, South Africa. He was hungry, visibly underweight, stuck in an arrested molt and sunburnt. They named him Rocky. When warmer waters push fish past where penguins can reach them, more birds end up like him.

In July, 2026 Disci and Domi welcomed two chicks, Fletcher and his sister Pamela. Look at Fletcher now! African penguins born in a zoo stay there. African penguins born at our partner sanctuaries are released to a colony in the wild where they mate and can produce at least 45 more pengins.

We love the pink too. It's functional as well as just the right hint of color. The pink patch acts as a cooling system. When the penguin gets hot, blood rushes to the pink patch; outside air passes over it and cools the blood as it recirculates back through the penguin's body.

Speaking of fish, many have recently died. Factors include a harmful algal bloom, pilchard herpesvirus (PHV), low oxygen, or unusual oceanographic conditions. We'll know more in Oct/Nov once studies are complete.
