I want to thank whoever made this image. Still one of the funniest things I've ever seen.

right, it seems to say "the data is compatible" with z's staff KiD, art master 400 (whatever that is lol), and ichitaro. the mention of ichitaro in particular makes me think this is mainly about file formats. no clue of other affiliations. this being ported/remade from msx is interesting tho lol

yet, asking a friend who knows more about msx than i do, they said that choice of colors is 100% intentional 😆 so yeah, remind me next time not to complain about an unexpected spine fade 🤣

cos it looks frigging mint to me, rofl! my best guess is the staffer thought that texture in the art is mold, as they singled out the cart, box and manual all being in bad shape. i can also see them thinking the manual looks water damaged with sun fade, cos that's how the colors would turn out, haha

then, this one may blow your mind, but i noticed a "totally banged up" copy of msx metal gear pop up for next to nothing, so just for the heck of it, and for the semi-reasonable chance that it won't be that bad at all, i took the gamble. well, do you spot anything "totally banged up" here?

first, i bought this game as Rank B condition for PC-88, but what i got instead is the vastly more rare and expensive PC-98 version, and the 3.5" one no less lol. i haven't been able to catch a whiff of this version for all the years i've been looking, & it has been one of my holy grails for 98,haha

when you've shopped on suruga-ya long enough, you've doubtless noticed the staff sometimes make mistakes when labeling the items. when you get unlucky with that tho, don't despair, cos before long the mistake will go in your favor. my latest batch had no less than two such cases:

meanwhile PC98 chads were too busy counting their corporate paychecks and going to soapland on the boss's dime, so they didn't care enough to rename theirs 😆

i have a theory that FM7 owners felt a bit of an inferiority complex toward the vastly more popular PC88, and hence wanted to rename their .D88 files, just to get that pesky 88 out of their face 😹

I'm being told the action game version of Back to the Future has been undumped for the PC-8801, with all images floating online being the adventure game. With the powers of @mp83.bsky.social's team and me combined, we have now fixed that 😸 archive.org/details/back...

i've semi-recently learned that the OG 🇯🇵 scene way to name .d88 floppy image files was to rename them .d98 when they're for pc98, and .d77 when they're for fm7. looking at the images that are out there tho, i don't think they bothered to do it themselves most of the time, so not gonna bother either😹

Genuinely, this completely rules
-Recently, the game has been going viral on X for its beautiful undressing animations. I’ve even read in one of your previous interviews that the development team practiced stripping themselves as reference for the undressing animations. What was the process behind making the animations actually like?

Matsui:

I’d love to know how far that story has spread. It’s true.

First, we write a plot for each undressing scene, then draw storyboards, exactly as the original team did. Then the real work begins, because the animation is essentially all keyed by hand. A designer moves the clothing’s 3D model, frame by frame, manually. It really is pretty much like the claymation method I mentioned.

We did try automating it with physics simulation first, but it was a total failure. The cloth moved in a physically correct way, but had absolutely no allure. We learned a profound lesson: accuracy and sensuality are two unrelated properties. In the end, we accepted that humans would have to do all of it.

Then VR adds its own weight. In a normal game, if something becomes awkward, you can cut away or swap models between scenes. In VR, the player can look from any angle at any time, so none of those tricks are available. The same model has to undress convincingly no matter where you’re standing. When I described this to a designer at another studio, he said, “I would never do that.” I’ve chosen to take it as a compliment. And then, yes, the part you’ve read about. The undressing motions themselves use motion capture, but the deeper problem was that nobody actually knew the correct rhythm and order in which a person takes off clothes. So, the directors gathered and undressed themselves as reference. “That zipper is coming down too fast.” “She’d pause once before slipping her shoulder out.” These were serious, sober discussions. For compliance reasons, the Super Real Mahjong Venus Returns team works in a walled-off section of our office – and that was the moment those walls truly earned their keep.

also, in case you thought that sounds simple enough, some disk magazines actually contain multiple games, so instead of being discounted, they should be adding to the total😆

4) to anyone planning on using this to come up with a definitive total number of games, note that you need to subtract CD rereleases, and a wide variety of loosely game-related titles that imo don't really count as games, like add-ons, compilations, cg sets, disk magazines... it gets hard, i know😆

krugman @動作不良品(カビ) @krugman.net · 28/09/2026
e.g. some games came with only a label to be placed on a save game disk you provide yourself, but others provided the disk too, & it's often hard to determine which was the case 3) there's a long list of "unconfirmed" titles at the end, & i'm p sure 99% of them never came out & should be disregarded

1) there are quite many misreadings (kana transliteration errors) in the game titles, which is funny because the people responsible are japanese natives, unlike old krug, who's just a pesky know-it-all 😆 2) i wouldn't take the number of included floppies as gospel, cos there's ambiguity about that -

*i guess "windows-only" was inaccurate, as on closer look it sez Windows両用, instead of the usual 専用. nevertheless i personally think a more interesting criterion for determining a game's "pc98-ness" is whether or not it still made use of some pc98-specific features, like the legendary -86 sound board

obviously a pc98 game originally. would they have cut out the -86 soundtrack at that point, assuming nobody would run ithe game on a pc98 anymore? maybe, but it seems to me more research could be put into games released as late as 99 and beyond, to see if they have remnants of "98 stuff" in them :)

for the -86 sound board, without which the game would sound worse. if this is the main criterion, however, i kinda think we might be able to find even later windows releases that fit the bill. e.g. surugaya lists a super late release date of 2000 for jewel case win release of girl 2, which was -

it's interesting that both this mook and 98list.xlsx (the jp community-assembled database that forms the backbone of refuge.tokyo) agree on the last titles, and both count girigiri paradise, which is a windows-only jewel case cd release. presumably what makes that game pc98 is a soundtrack composed-
