I can't stand that these mega-companies keep taking friendly names like Meta and Alphabet. There should be some rule that says if your company owns other companies, you have to stick to clearly evil-sounding names like Palantir or Oracle or ConAgra.

People forget that for decades people have gone to see sequel movies in theaters without necessarily having seen the previous installment, often with no recourse of catching up the way we do with streaming. They just follow along as best they can, and later watch the others and go "Oh NOW I get it."

This seems to be a thing people are doing, so I figured I'd play. If you really want to get into the weeds about why I picked what I did, see the Alt text. Here's a link for you to do it too: my9games.net

1: Zork
2: Space Quest
3: Quest for Glory
4: Civilization
5: Sam & Max Hit The Road
6: Fallout
7: RollerCoaster Tycoon
8: The Sims
9: Deus Ex

I played tons of games growing up, so ranking them was easier said than done. A lot of games were contenders, but these nine represent notable shifts in how I thought of and interacted with games.

Zork: where I began my love of gaming, and made me want to become a game designer. (Back when that could be a one-person operation.)

Space Quest. My gateway drug into graphic adventures, including most of the Sierra series. I loved them, even their unfair dead ends and surprise deaths.

Quest For Glory introduced me to CRPG's (I was familiar with TTRPG's at the time, but the experiences are apples and oranges.)

Civilization introduced me to turn-based strategy, resource management, and all that good stuff. I tried other series, but found myself going back to the Civ series. Special shout-out to MOO and AoE.

Sam & Max showed me that games could actually make me laugh, and not just groan at puns. It was also the first time I felt that a game's voice acting could hold its own next to professional cartoons.

Fallout was a tough choice. I could have included a lot of top-down RPG's here, but for my money none of them held a candle to this tongue-in-cheek post-apocalyptic series. It is the only RPG series where I played and won nearly every entry ::gives side-eye to Fallout 4::

RollerCoaster Tycoon poured gasoline on the small flame that was my love of coasters, giving me the chance to fiddle with physics.

The Sims. There was a time I might've been embarrassed to admit this one, til I leaned that a (now-deceased) good friend was big in the Sims modding scene, making mods that are still used by Simmers to this day.

Lastly, Deus Ex. An open-ended hybrid RPG, it's the platonic ideal in my mind of what a scripted sandbox RPG can be. More linear than it descendants, but to me many modern games owe part of their success to this one.

Yes! I mean, the 2026 version feels like it's based on an animated movie already, so even a shot-for-shot remake would feel seamless. I bet it'd even do better, because people wouldn't be distracted by things that make no sense in live action. And Tamatoa would probably look less gross!

Yeah, I saw a video where a guy was grabbing everything relatively of value that was cheap, saying he could resell it for 50% more online (I forget the percentage.) I hate it.
