“As you visited me across the years— I have visited the other one. I spoke to your lover, in your chronological frame, fourteen days ago." -- It's still the 15th in my heart! #WritingCommunity #Amwriting #WIPsnips #Writesky #WritingPrompts #sci-fi
“When was the last time you spoke to Eight?” Dennis asked, cutting through Infinity’s train of thought as the transport flew on. District 83 passed like a blur beneath them, and the transport had its own cloaking technology. Something that far eclipsed anything Infinity’s time could possibly imagine.

“Hmm. That would depend on how you like to measure your time,” it said, and drummed its fingers on the armrest. The interior was significantly more lavish than any transport Eight had created— a comfort rivaling that of the Edisons’ and their lofty expectations. “As you visited me across the years— I have visited the other one. I spoke to your lover, in your chronological frame, fourteen days ago. But the Infinity that spoke to it is two years younger than myself. I am speaking to you exclusively to keep things simple. And in about sixteen days in your world, I will return here to bitch at the other one about its nonsensical approach to creating fuel cells. As you can see, I have structured my time very well.”

The agony pulsed up and down its prone, pathetic form, worsening for what felt like hours before the pain subsided again. The body could only lay there, sucking in deep, unsteady breaths, waiting for this nightmare to end. #WritingCommunity #Amwriting #Writesky #WIPSnips #sci-fi #WritingPrompts
The Body could only wince in pain as it realized just how much every part of it hurt. The agony pulsed up and down its prone, pathetic form, worsening for what felt like hours before the pain subsided again. The body could only lay there, sucking in deep, unsteady breaths, waiting for this nightmare to end.

Amidst the pain was an overwhelming sense of unbridled rage, coupled with dread and sorrow that sang as if it’d been struck like a tuning fork, the note cacophonous and unbearable. A desire to run, to scream, to cry, to thrash about and resist whatever hell had befallen it possessed its mind so deeply— yet it could not move. All the body could do was try to make sense of this pain, of the wrongs that had surely occurred, of the abandonment that had surely sunk serrated claws deep into its flesh. Indeed, its mind swam with these possibilities, and it longed to return to the world of the dead for just a little longer. Just until the pain abated…

And then it heard a sound.

It kept an eye on every sensor, every drone that patrolled the general area, every skyward-facing camera in case there were transports coming in to try raiding this place or any other in the immediate vicinity. #WritingCommunity #Amwriting #sci-fi #horror #WIPsnips #Writesky #WritingPrompts
District 61’s outskirts boasted historical brick buildings, towers that only extended as high as 45 floors. This one was firmly under Eight’s control— the entire surrounding four blocks were. It kept an eye on every sensor, every drone that patrolled the general area, every skyward-facing camera in case there were transports coming in to try raiding this place or any other in the immediate vicinity. Of course that meant the entire building was fair game, and Dennis had the gall to choose the topmost floor as their shared living space. But the second floor had this lab and a lot of other very important things Eight liked to work on in its spare time— though none of its work involved bodies, here. Dennis would always pitch a fit at the mere thought of its more unethical work. And was he so wrong to raise his objections? Perhaps not.

... And to see all that come to an end over an oversight like this would be beyond heartbreaking. The loss of its company might just kill her. -- #WritingCommunity #Amwriting #writesky #sci-fi #horror #WIPSnips #WritingPrompts
Ridgwell Farm was absolutely massive. The land itself was divided between her and her siblings, her mother and father, and a single cousin. Bianca lived in her cottage alone, and had an adjacent cabin with a basement that Eight used whenever it stayed on-site. The two worked together on projects of many kinds: it taught her how to dissect the human form and replace whatever needed replacing— organs, brains, skulls, limbs. The time they spent together was truly magical…And to see all that come to an end over an oversight like this would be beyond heartbreaking. The loss of its company might just kill her.

Thinking of the past was an irritating endeavor when all it could see was the lineage of suffering it took to get to this point. Though while said suffering once felt like a badge of honor; it now seemed an unprecedented look into the face of mediocrity.

After all, what was physical injury to someone who was capable of swapping out their body like an old t-shirt? -- Fun Fact: This is the only instance of the word 'injury' that doesn't also involve a gruesome description! :'D #WIPsnips #WritingCommunity #Amwriting #Writesky #WritingPrompts #Sci-fi
It must have known he would better grasp the pervasiveness of this habit to which Eight was inexorably linked. Its penchant for self injury was a visceral, gory coping mechanism maintained solely because it’d been dependent on the practice for the last dozen decades or so. Likely far longer. After all, what was physical injury to someone who was capable of swapping out their body like an old t-shirt?

"...You would relish the challenge, would you not? And isn’t that what you want, to know what no one else ever will?” -- I had to do this one! "Unstable" because it's close enough right? :'D #WritingCommunity #Amwriting #Writesky #WritingPrompts #TFOTSnip
“And you think giving me a disembodied ‘brain’ is going to somehow make me feel more comfortable with the idea of handing you burnable books? There is only one copy of each in this city. Daylight alone could destroy them— you must be out of your damn mind.”

“I am!” it snapped, “I have no capacity for restraint. I am an unstable lunatic, nothing I do makes any sense because they are the actions of a nutcase— I am disappointed you are still surprised by this obvious fucking fact.

“I am offering you something that I cannot take back, yes? Knowledge. As much as I think of you as a fleeting pest– and you are one, to be clear– you are incredibly capable. You can decipher what it knows, and you are certainly too much a hard-headed bitch to give up on such a task. You would relish the challenge, would you not? And isn’t that what you want, to know what no one else ever will?” And it felt itself breathing harder and harder yet again. Shutting its eyes, screwing up its face, it sucked in a deep breath. Slowly let it out.

“Isn’t that… what you want?” it asked again, quieter.

"...Without them, there’s no one looking at the live feed of the hallway to determine whether or not a clever bastard like myself is breaking in to the little apartment belonging to the fabled widow of an Edison.” #WritingCommunity #Amwriting #Writesky #WritingPrompts #sci-fi
“Why are you in my house?” she said, and managed to peek through the blinding light and the tears slipping from the corners of her eyes to see the shifting figure beyond.

The Surgeon took a seat across from her at her own damn table, folding its unnaturally white hands together as it studied her with a smirk.

“How did you get past the—?”

“The security guards on this floor are also easy to incapacitate, incidentally. Without them, there’s no one looking at the live feed of the hallway to determine whether or not a clever bastard like myself is breaking in to the little apartment belonging to the fabled widow of an Edison.”

Thanks :D The overarching genre is meant to be hard sci-fi (or as realistic as I can manage). There are horror stories, romances, dramas, action-oriented pieces, etc. But they're all about the same characters! This particular one is from a vignette I wrote not too long ago!

"...So, if I’m going to replace someone’s vocal chords and change the chemical makeup of their gut biome, I might as well see if their brain melts in their skull so long as it doesn’t disrupt my primary objective." #writingCommunity #Amwriting #Sci-fi #WIPsnips #biopunk #Writesky
“There are many diseases that required incubation, though I’m sure those details aren’t of any interest to you. I also had a medication that needed to be tested— it was meant to be a tranquilizer powerful enough to render someone comatose for a week with a single injection. I had a feeling it’d lead to severe brain damage— the initial formulation was perfectly safe until injected into a body— wherein it would become basic enough to rival bleach. Which sounds terrible to inject into someone I’d like to wake up again later, don’t you think? So, if I’m going to replace someone’s vocal chords and change the chemical makeup of their gut biome, I might as well see if their brain melts in their skull so long as it doesn’t disrupt my primary objective. Because you know I have no intention of experimenting on someone I care about,” and it gestured to him with one uncaring hand, “And certainly not on myself. Ergo: bodies. Ones with relative compatibility, in terms of genome and biological sensitivities, to ensure I get as accurate results as possible. Unfortunately they’re all dead now, and I have made zero useful fucking conclusions.”

It turned to the desk and finally began to work. It had a flesh welder already primed and loaded with cellular glue, and a wad of soaked paper towels that was set beside it by that same puttering drone. It began to wipe away the globs of blood from its shoulder. The injury on its forearm spilled black onto the towels underneath it, and those towels became the dark ceiling above him in his bedroom. Yawning and vacuous, like the void that had long since expanded in his body to encompass every emotion he had ever felt.

"To put it in terms you'll fucking understand, I can keep her alive for as long as you like... in a coma. But her consciousness is dead." -- A little late but I made it! #wipSnips #WritingCommunity #writesky #biopunk #amwriting #sci-fi
"I am a scientist, Dennis. A doctor. I am not some omnipotent god, though my skillset obviously implies otherwise! My capacity to preserve functional life is not synonymous with our brand of living, and permanent perpetuation is ultimately impossible. Even my own body will die one day, though I will do all I can to delay that inevitability. To put it in terms you'll fucking understand, I can keep her alive for as long as you like... in a coma. But her consciousness is dead."

“You will,” it said, “Everyone must meet death eventually, yes? I will never understand people’s utter disregard for their lives— but, you make your own fucking choices. Here.” And it plucked a burner phone from its pocket, dropping the device square in the center of the table as it stood. She had to crane her head to meet its eyes. “Whenever you feel so inclined, contact me on this. The signal is encrypted, and if I feel you’re using it recklessly, I will destroy it and you. That’s my only warning to you.”

Genre is meant to be fluid and descriptive. When it moves beyond that it ceases to be a useful descriptor. Genre ought not to be prescriptive. Genre exists to be a way of helping us preserve and discus a story. Genre prescriptivism is gatekeeping for weenies and hacks. Don’t be a weenie. 💙📚🪐

... Much better, it figured, to feel like some distant, ethereal observer— for all participants in this world were greatly flawed... -- Eight is fine you guys. Sane and normal and not at all unstable or unwell! :) #WIPsnips #WritingCommunity #Writesky #biopunk #amwriting #Sci-fi
It nodded, finally found enough escape velocity to take a seat on the couch, as far from him as it could get. Eight crossed its legs and did… nothing. Its phone was in its hand in no time, but there was little it felt like doing beyond staring blankly at the black screen. It was thinking, ruminating, hating. But most of all, it was avoiding its reflection in the glass, tilting the phone in a way that it could continue to pretend it was not real. Much better, it figured, to feel like some distant, ethereal observer— for all participants in this world were greatly flawed.

But Eight was like Nano... it was meant to be perfect.

= It was, of course, immune to such devastating effects, because it had grown this body around the sludgy blood it had concocted for itself— forced sluggishly through its widened veins..." = Eight, stop being mean to your assistant! #WritingCommunity #WIPsnips #Writesky #amwriting
And it had taken action after her head smacked into the tiled floor. It had initially stared at her inert form, at her lips as they turned blue, at her twitching, at her silence… and all the while, Eight had felt nothing but mild irritation that she had to go off and inconvenience it.
Though, perhaps it felt a little stupid to have pushed her body to such lengths. Everyone knew what happened when one took too much nano, and given Eight had invented it— it was well aware of the potential consequences. It had not considered such effects because, really, Ridgwell was a healthy woman outside the mild malnourished form she sported before it had offered her the key to the kingdom of ‘genetic modification’. It was, of course, immune to such devastating effects, because it had grown this body around the sludgy blood it had concocted for itself— forced sluggishly through its widened veins. Nano comprised every inch of this body, actually… it was even present in its skin.
Regardless, Ridgwell opened her eyes not ten minutes after the onset of her cardiac arrest, sucking in a deep, trembling breath as she did so. Staring up at the brilliant lights embedded in the ceiling, she looked exactly as confused as everyone did, when they woke up somewhere new and strange, perfectly unharmed.
Eight was sure it had looked that way, when it woke up in this body.

Mark my words, the biggest counterculture movement we’ll have moving forward will be physical media. I’m talking handmade zines, traditional art, etc. Niche, small circles that can’t be easily infiltrated by the corpos. Cause when you globalize everything, the individual ultimately owns nothing.
