I have not even begun to unpack my trauma surrounding all sports stemming from the bullying and abuse I suffered in middle school PE. Reading this piece had me in tears, because I had much the same experience as Margaret, despite being trans non-binary and not a trans girl.

I'm not a Marxist, but I find Marx to be an extremely useful place to start when you want to learn why capitalism is harmful. My own flavor of leftism tends toward anarcho-communism, or "libertarian socialism," if you like.

Capitalism is a system of domination and hierarchy. It is at odds with any form of egalitarianism. Therefore, a capitalist economic system cannot be the basis for a free society.

Here in the US, we use the words "liberal" and "conservative" to distinguish stances on social issues. However, both the republican and the democratic party are liberal, in the original sense of the word. Both uphold capitalism. Democrats are just nicer about it, on the surface.

In case you got a poor political education in US schools, like me: Liberalism is inherently capitalistic, while at the same time purporting to honor human rights and egalitarianism. This is a fatal contradiction that leads to fascism in many cases. The left starts at anti-capitalism. Start there.

THIS. I'm really sick of centrists proclaiming that "both sides" are awful, or equally extremist. It is not extreme to want human rights for every single person. It is basic human decency and compassion. The right is the problem, and the closer our politics get to it, the worse off we will be.

remember, you can yell scream and curse at the political fundraising texts, but DO NOT reply with an actionable threat because the US attorney’s office considers the volunteer batch sending them to be a live human recipient of that message. it’s not just a bot. those cases can and do get charged.

I've been studying the history of US, and indeed, global policing my whole career and I can't make it more clear to law makers that this isn't a bastardization of policing, it is its purest form and logical conclusion. The impunity, militarization, deference, legitimacy, racial targeting, etc.
