Common folks. We can do better. I know we can. Also, everyone wants to blame this on AI slop, but the enshittification has been happening for a while.
A webform displays a very unhelpful error code instead of a useful error message

"I can't possibly fathom how these same idiots, the morons who continued overhiring LONG into the era of low rates, who then laid off into the same "unsuspected unchanging" rates, and are now "streamlining" for the era of AI when they, at this point, clearly have ...

There is nothing good about this

This is one of the primary reasons I left Disney. There is so much senseless anxiety about things that really don't matter to customers, the product, or to shareholders. All of that anxiety is pushed onto managers, who can't possibly keep it all from leaking into their teams.

We need more of this punk attitude.

I'm not sure if it was intentional to feature Alan Kay in this photo marking the 50th birthday of Apple. But it sure seems appropriate. Alan Kay was not a founder of Apple or a school teacher, he is , the inventor of Smalltalk and most of Object Oriented Programming.
School teachers and classmates look on as a student works with the first Macintosh Computer from Apple.

There are advantages to being young, and advantages to being old. We should recognize when to use them. There was a time when I wanted nothing more than to the best mountain climber I could be. Sitting over a beer in a little mountain town in Alaska, an old climber gave me this advice:

Gemini gave me this choice between two different outcomes, which I've never seen before. Like a "choose your own adventure" thing. Interesting! (I'm working on a fake website project to test out some workflows with LLMs.)

I know the hype train is real (and annoying to us old farts) but messing around with LLMs in software is guiding me in some really fun directions.
Curiosity is the best guide. Do things that you are excessively curious about. This excited curiosity is both an engine and a rudder.

I can imagine a number of reasons someone decided this was a good idea, and all of them could have been overcome with a smarter solution. This is just lazy problem solving. And then there is this 2 inch empty filler, I’m assuming to make the box a particular size, for some dumbass reason

I really despise poor quality and lazy design. Here is a string of backyard lights, with each bulb individually wrapped in red plastic, which is super frustrating to remove. This is a Hampton light set from Home Depot What a waste of human brain cycles.

The Model Y is like the Model T of the new age of the automobile. Best car I've ever owned.

Coders in the northern part of the northern hemisphere: I think there should be a two week holiday straddling the winter solstice where we don't go anywhere and just hole up, get cozy, and write code in the dark while it snows outside.

I like being on my keyboard in the early hours of the morning. It’s one of my favorite parts of winter in the northern hemisphere— it’s dark longer, which is great for my focus. But dev tools like this AWS login with the bright white background just kill the vibe

Human nature evolves, but much more slowly than our relationship with our technology and media.

When you're new to the programming world, my best advice is to ignore the advice of more senior devs. Sometimes they are right, but most of the time a fresh brain can do better in a problem space, and you should lean into that.

Love this: Tech: PHP + jQuery + SQLite on a Hetzner VPS with Nginx and Ubuntu Don't overthink it. Don't need to ship a pile of shitty TypeScript front end code.

I wonder how many of these malicious bots have been abandoned by their creators and are just polluting the internet? Like space junk.

The best product doesn't always win. Distribution always wins. (distribution is best when coupled with a great product)

Google has handed its search product over to the C team. Is anyone building a search engine? Let's go Duck Duck Go! Seems like this is a good time to give it a college try.

Keep coding. Or step back, take a walk, listen to some music, get some sleep, and come back with a fresh mind. Your code will thank you.

Just because we can put a workflow into code for an AI agent, doesn't mean we should, or that we are ready for it. Really great point here.

Kris Walker @kriswalker.me · 19/09/2025
Honestly, I think AI agents *will* be coding agents. Agents can only operate within workflows which can be expressed in code. AI is not taking away programmers jobs. It's making them more relevant than ever.

The Kixx framework will feature a document datastore which writes documents to disk as individual small files. Why? Because it means you can set up a project without running a database, *and* it's actually really fast.

Creative risk trades near-term value capture for long-term value creation. One way I've found to get into this frame of mind is to ask myself what somebody else should be working on. That's probably where the long term value creation is.

If it is an entirely AI simulation of Microsoft then why do you need to hire anyone? How's that for tongue-in-cheek?
