Started reading the wonderful #Katabasis but this line has me thinking it’s a bit too meta for pre-semester reading: “No one ever suggested that perhaps, in addition to doing his research, Professor Grimes should have been fulfilling his duties as a teacher…” 👀👀👀

I really need people to understand that in a *game* the narrative goal is to drive the player forward, alongside entertaining and challenging play. In a *show* the narrative is central. We, as the viewer, don’t have to be compelled to move forward - the character does. #TLOU

Reducing womanhood to bio-essentialism is the most anti-feminist, conservative stance: a patriarchal tenet that fundamentally harms all women. Sex has never been binary. Trans and intersex people have always existed. To suggest otherwise is unscientific and ahistorical.

✨CALL FOR PAPERS✨ History and/as social science 1.5 Day workshop @uofgsotl.bsky.social exploring the teaching of history as/in social sciences AND/OR the experiences of historians teaching in social sciences. Deadline 14 March. Details below (inc alt text). Please share! ✨
History as/in Social Sciences:
Current approaches and future directions
1.5 Day Workshop,
Tuesday 20-Wednesday 21 May 2025
In the context of increasing anxieties around the financial stability of Higher Education in
the United Kingdom, the humanities have fallen victim to budget cuts, department
closures, and institutional restructuring. Within this, history departments have been
particularly targeted, with questions arising across the political sphere around the ‘value
and appeal of a history degree’ (RHS, 2022).
History has always been an inherently interdisciplinary vocation; bending and blending
the boundaries between the humanities and the social sciences. Similarly, within UKHE
institutions, the humanities and social sciences are often inextricably intertwined and
analogous. Yet, important differences between the two schools remain.
This workshop seeks to understand the ways in which history is being taught in the social
sciences across UKHE, and the impact this has had on historians and the history
discipline.
We are seeking submission proposals of c. 250 words for a 15-20 minute paper from
interested scholars related to, but not exclusively on, the following themes:

- Teaching history as a social science
- Teaching history in the social sciences
- Teaching the social sciences as a historian
- The impact of history in the social sciences on professional boundaries and identity

We particularly welcome proposals from precariously employed scholars, Graduate
Teaching Assistants, and independent researchers with experience in teaching history.
The deadline for proposals is EOB Friday 14th March 2025. They should be sent to
Kristin.hay@glasgow.ac.uk and felicity.cawley@glasgow.ac.uk with a short biography.

In October, I wrote about how Trump’s potential presidency could impact reproductive rights in Scotland. Never did I think it would be as explicit as the US veep spouting fear mongering, nonsensical lies about Scotland’s buffer zones. www.heraldscotland.com/politics/vie...

The US has us asking: where's Scotland’s reproductive health agenda?
The hot-button issue in the 2024 Presidential election remains sexual and reproductive health, specifically abortion rights. But what about Scotland?
