Climate science PhD and aspiring polyglot. I study the atmosphere (aerosols/clouds/air quality) and the Arctic, not always at the same time. Still trying to figure out life, the universe, everything. I’m not as Online as I once was. she/her/ella

Anyway this afternoon I caught a typo of “anthropomorphic pollution” instead of “anthropogenic pollution,” and I’ve been reminiscing about the career of the late great Tim Curry ever since.
An image of Hexxus, the anthropomorphic pollution (here in form of a cloud) from the 1992 animated film “Ferngully: The Last Rainforest.” It’s exactly what it sounds like: a black, toxic, evil-looking cloud, that would eventually morph into a kind of demon skeleton later in the film, ‘cause he was released from his prison by some evil deforesters. Voiced (and sung) by Tim Curry, that movie plus Captain Planet and the Planeteers is maybe a strong contributing factor to Why I’m Like This as an adult?

I’m obviously Not Very Online these days (I just have needed to moderate myself because everything is bad everywhere all at once and I can’t let myself get into a doomscrolling spiral) but this conversation between two absolute climate/science/writing rockstars brought me great joy.

So… has anyone done a good one of those? Or are there things to avoid if we tried to put together an event like that? Maybe some of the @skypeascientist.bsky.social local projects? Would love to chat with anyone on or offline about ideas :)

Motivation: @ayanaeliza.bsky.social had a couple WIWGIR episodes about how rare good (vs apocalyptic) climate stories are in media, so I’m trying to think how we might address that even if we’re not ourselves in Hollywood.

Question for the former #sciencetwitter and #scicomm folks: does anyone have (hopefully good?) experience with climate storytelling workshops or other facilitation? I’m thinking something like the Alan Alda Scicomm workshop, but for the general public (local) rather than scientists specifically.

Three weeks ago I spent a few days in one of our global dark sky sanctuaries in Rakiura Stewart Island New Zealand. Never has deep time felt so real or so close. But every now and then one of Elon's dumbfuck satellites would interrupt the eternal rhythms of the stars. Let's not let it get worse.

By my count it’s three distinct generations of scientists that have been lost in barely a year: 1) students like this who can’t get funding to even start study 2) early/mid-career who no longer have funds or support to stay in this career 3) senior scientists who DRP’d or otherwise noped-out early.

Firings are happening right now at the National Science Foundation. Essential staff are being cut. This isn’t about the budget. If it was, they’d be going after the military (17%) or state appropriations (38%). NSF is 0.7% of the federal budget. All federal employees make up only 4% of the budget.

People might think that whatever destruction is done to science in the US, we can undo in 4 years with a Democratic president and Congress. The problem is that many areas require specialized knowledge and skills built up over years, and once that's lost, it's hard to get back.

It is perfectly legal to know your rights and to educate others about them, too. EVERYONE in the United States, citizen or not, has rights. I will not allow this administration to intimidate us from helping you know about them. Here’s our shareable guide ⬇️: (pt. 1/2)
KNOW YOUR
RIGHTS
IN CASE OF ICE:
CONOCE TUS DERECHOS
EN CASO DE ENCUENTRO CON ICE:DO NOT OPEN YOUR DOOR.
ICE cannot enter your home without a warrant signed by a judge.
Tell the agents to show you the warrant by sliding it under the door.
NO ABRAS TU PUERTA.
ICE no puede entrar a tu casa sin una orden firmada por un juez. Diles a los agentes que te muestren la orden deslizándola debajo de la puerta.ASK THEM
TO LEAVE.
If ICE doesn't have a warrant, tell them you do not consent for them to enter your home and ask them to leave. At work, ICE cannot enter employee-only areas without permission.
2
You have the right to remain silent.
If the agents ask you questions, tell them,
"I wish to remain silent."
PERMANECE EN SILENCIO.
Tienes derecho a permanecer en silencio.
Si los agentes te hacen preguntas, diles:
"Deseo permanecer en silencio".

For some reason thinking of this today, who can say why youtu.be/IFAMpW0hPNY?... Overly-simplified context: in the late 80s, after 15 years of dictatorship, Chile did a referendum vote on the dictator Pinochet; ‘yes’ = ‘you can stay a dictator forever’, ‘no’ = democratic elections again. ‘No’ won.

I regret to say that I immediately flashed to some science papers I have read recently, where the authors confusingly use $50 words when $10 words would absolutely suffice, and probably make everything clearer :x

The way I see it, it took us ~20y to even get to where we got with the Paris Accords. Even IF we understood aerosols well enough to robustly say it would help & not harm, it would take ages to set up our human systems to do albedo mod responsibly. Whereas solar/weatherization/etc are *right there*!

It’s super covidy out there folks! If you don’t want to get sick (or get others sick), now is a great time to take precautions (masks, ventilation, outdoor stuff, avoiding crowds, the usual). And for the sake of others, please stay home (or at least mask up) if you feel unwell and/or test positive!

My article with The Texas Observer is now online! The title means “return to the land of many houses,” which is our (Lipan Apache) word for home. In this article, I write about the rematriation of an elder (my relative) who lived in KÍŁÁÁHÍÍ about 750 years ago. www.texasobserver.org/lipan-apache...
Screenshot of article lede and a photo of Darcie’s back as she looks over the traditional burial ground in Presidio Texas. Lede says “An Elder is restored to the Lipan Apache people more than 750 years after her death”.

PSA for whoever needs to hear it: hepatitis B can be chronic and dramatically increases your risk of liver cancer and Asian Americans are extremely disproportionately affected. So if you can, get tested so you know whether to monitor it. 34 is too damn young.

Maybe I shouldn't say this out loud but I has been extremely frustrating watching protestors show they are willing to mask up when their own safety is at risk but not when it's for the safety of the disabled and immunocompromised. And now masks are gonna be banned because of it.

Mask bans are evil and dystopian and I am appalled that they’re even being proposed. Wearing masks to protect your health and the health of others needs to be recognized as a right for all and an absolutely essential protection for those who would otherwise be unable to participate in society

YMMV by location, but many places also have boards and commissions e.g. Sustainability, Library, Bicycle and Pedestrians… we love it when people show up so it’s not just us talking to ourselves. Although we appreciate less bullying energy, more Leslie Knope “people [constructively] caring at us” :)
