3 sickening years of incontrovertible evidence that resistance is justified, necessary and urgent while Palestine is occupied. Albanese is not alone but is a standout among the “leaders” who have rivers of Palestinian and Lebanese blood on their hands for enabling Israel’s escalating genocide.

IF YOU HAVE COMPULSORY ACTIVITIES:
If minister Rishworth allows welfare cops to stop people’s Centrelink payments during this crisis, welfare recipients who cannot afford to absorb high fuel and taxi costs should email their provider requesting all in-person activities to be paused or moved to phone/online. Make sure you ask for a reduction in your points target as well.

Copying the minister and your local MP on the email may increase the likelihood of the provider agreeing to the request. The minister’s email address is: minister.rishworth@dewr.gov.au

You can look up your MP’s contact information here: https://www.aph.gov.au/Senators_and_Members

Compulsory activities (aka “mutual” obligations) aren’t even operating lawfully. And now welfare recipients are being made to pay an even higher price. Read the full statement: apcentre.substack.com/p/rishworth-...
Rishworth must stop penalties for welfare recipients in face of fuel crisis.
People in poverty cannot afford to pay even higher prices for their own punishment.

This @getup.org.au email is an example of the very worst campaign grifting. I won’t share the image, but yes it’s a billboard in PHON colours with the leader’s face on it. You don’t stop the far right’s rise by plastering their brand the community, you help it. But I’m sure they’ll get lots of $$$.
With Pauline Hanson surging in the polls, I just made a big decision.
I've booked huge outdoor billboards, in key electorates across the country that One Nation is targeting, with a message that we know works to dent her support.
And I've committed us before being sure we have the money to cover the costs, to make sure we don't miss our chance.
So I really need your help - can you chip in whatever you can afford to help us pull this off?

Priorities.
How is anyone surviving solely on the single parenting payment in Australia right now?! I’m a single Mum of 2 children aged 5 and 2. I pay $430 per week in rent which mind you is cheap for my area, around $70 per week in childcare. My groceries are usually $300+ to last my kids and I and I’m barely surviving. I often go days without food for myself, I barely scrape by. I’m constantly behind in bills. And I’m struggling to gain employment on top of all this due to being a stay at home Mum for a few years now, no one will give me a chance. I’ve tried applying for loans of even $100 when I’ve been struggling for food and I get declined due to my only income being Centrelink, which I think is ridiculous! If I had other forms of income besides Centrelink I wouldn’t be needing to try do loans. As well as I have had to do 2 “ urgent payments” this year through Centrelink to get by and I think it’s insane you have to wait another whole year before you can do an urgent payment. Sorry to rant, I’m just so frustrated and feel really stuck.

ICYMI: "mutual" obligations are still just a series of unlawful decisions a trench coat, but the commonwealth ombudsman might be starting to unbutton it ...
"The secretary of the Department of Employment and Workplace Relations has made a number of decisions to pause parts of the TCF while reviews are underway and is committed to ensuring the system operates as it should."
Despite the chaos, the TCF is still issuing suspensions.
Antipoverty Centre welfare campaigner Jeremy Poxon was responsible for the freedom of information request that uncovered the 2023 ministerial brief to Tony Burke.
"The secretary paused payment cancellations and reductions because of concerns that they're unlawful," Poxon explains. "So, on that basis alone, she should be worried about the number of unlawful payment suspensions we know occur each week."
"Amidst this legal scandal, job providers are still wielding the TCF as their own private weapon, threatening and penalising jobseekers for profit."
For those with first-hand knowledge of the system, this is no surprise.

This is a really good scheme, except for one thing. If you’re in energy debt you can’t access it. So the fact that you’re too poor to afford electricity excludes you from the cheap electricity. About ½ the people on an energy hardship plan are welfare recipients.
Mel is a public housing tenant living in the Adelaide northern suburbs. She is a part-time student and relies on the JobSeeker payment to live. She says:
I'm extremely grateful to have public housing but I'm not grateful for the money I save in rent having to go towards my electricity bill. I have a skin condition which often means hospital stays. Heat makes it flare up. Once my house heats up it stays that way for days and is often cooler outside then it is in.
I own a very old box air conditioner that i got for $30 at Cash Converters that I have no choice but to run, except when I run it, it costs me an extra $75 a week. That's an extra $150 a fortnight I don't have. But it only cools my bedroom, not the living area.
My electricity bill at this time is over $5,500. Being on JobSeeker,
I can only afford to put $50 a week towards it, which doesn't cover the cost. So I'm falling deeper and deeper in debt.
As a full-time online student this makes it harder as my computer overheats constantly.
There are people that will say, "What about the subsidy that was given directly to electricity companies?" And to them I say, my rates went up as soon as that happened, as did other people's, to take the whole lot.
Those of us in poverty are more at risk from climate change then those who are not. We already do without so much and our health and safety matters too.

A very pertinent question! We encourage anyone who thinks this to email minister watt and/or share relevant experiences with the Workforce Australia complaints line.
All "mutual" obligations payment reductions and cancellations have been stopped due to questions over legality of DEWR processes. So you may have seen some media reporting about ~1000 people who had their Centrelink payment unlawfully cancelled because DEWR was not following the proper process when making those decisions. The issues that have been revealed go back to at least 2020 and affected at least 10s of 1000s of people, if not more.
I was in a briefing yesterday where we were given information about the much greater extent of the problem, and what has been changed SO FAR. At the moment, the most disgraceful thing is that payment *suspensions* remain, even though they are stopping reductions and cancellations. This means you can still get a demerit, but the demerit will not result in any cut to your payment, even if you get 5 demerits and move into the "red zone".
You will still need to contact the provider if your payment is suspended to get it reinstated.
The employment department secretary Natalie James told us that the reason she is keeping suspensions in place is because she "doesn't have reason to believe" that job agencies are wrongly suspending people's payments.
That is patently absurd. When she said this, I asked if she has looked at the complaints data from the Workforce Australia National Customer Service Line about payment suspensions, and she said it hasn't been taken into account at this stage. We are going to push for that to be considered in the review that is currently underway.
If your payment has been wrongly suspended, even if you managed to fix it before your payment was delayed, I urge you to send an email to the NCSL outlining what happened - even if it's just a very brief description, and even if it wasn't super recent. Their email address is contact the National Customer Service Line on 1800 805 260 or via nationalcustomerserviceline@dewr.gov.au
