The city will utilize LA Municipal Code 41.18 to ethnically cleans our sidewalks of poor Black and Brown people (regardless of housing status), and disappear anyone else they deem undesirable in the lead-up to the Olympics, just like it did in 1984. We saw Councilmember Eunisses Hernandez sat on 1/
Screenshot of article text: Kris Rehl, an organizer with LA Street Care and the Abolish 41.18 Campaign, contends that no-encampment zones serve only to shuffle homeless people from one area to another.
"The only way to change the housing status of an unhoused person is to house them. Putting them in jail for a short amount of time, fining them with tickets up to $2,500 is not going to change the fact that people are unhoused," Rehl said.
Last year, Rehl's group and others demanded that Soto-Martínez follow through on his promise and repeal the zones within his district. When there was no action during his reelection campaign this year, they demonstrated outside his home, sent postcards to his campaign donors and pushed for the cancellation of one of his fundraisers.
"I think it's unfortunate that this amount of pressure is needed to get a candidate to do something they support," Rehl said.

I’ve spent the past 16 months organizing more than 50 groups to pressure this “socialist” councilmember to do the thing he said he would do on the campaign trail: stop criminalizing people for sitting down in public. This is a huge victory but just a small step toward decriminalizing poverty in L.A.

The struggles of unhoused and undocumented people are more interconnected than you know. An estimated 10% of unhoused Angelenos are undocumented. While ICE kidnaps people off our streets every day, city officials continue to sweep encampments and enforce anti-camping laws.
UNDOCUMENTED OR UNHOUSED
No one should be criminalized!

There is no moral argument for Councilmember Hugo Soto-Martinez to continue defending Mitch O'Farrell's 41.18 zones when Hugo compared 41.18 to racial profiling and stop-and-frisk. All of his supporters should be ashamed.
"America has a long history of using its power to punish people of color, workers, and the poor. In 1968, the Supreme Court decided it was legal for police to detain anyone they deem suspicious. In New York City there was Stop and Frisk. Today in Los Angeles we have 41.18 (thread)"

One of the most frustrating things about entertainment industry union leadership is their refusal to endorse CalCare. Single-payer health care would remove the AMPTP's greatest piece of leverage over workers in every negotiation.

DEAR MEMBERS,
The Writers Guild Health Fund and Pension Plan are fundamental elements of economic security for writers. In this negotiation, writers need significant additional contributions to the Health Fund and Pension Plan to protect their solvency and ensure sustainable benefits for writers going forward.
The WA's State of Our Health and Pension Plans bulletin explains the current pressures on our plans, and what we need to do to protect high-quality benefits for members when we go into bargaining with the AMPTP in March.

Everyone in the movement knows we must abolish 41.18, LA's law that criminalizes poor people for existing in public spaces. We don't have the votes to repeal the entire law right now, so we MUST push Hugo, Eunisses, and Ysabel to repeal the 41.18 zones their predecessors created in their districts.

Called it in February 2024 (even if the run date was 4 years off).
This may explain some of Nithya's choices in her re-election campaign. She is fortunately still refusing corporate donations, but her campaign has made a noticeable shift from emphasizing grassroots movements to featuring establishment figures with moderate politics. And I understand that she has to make a case to win votes from her now more conservative constituency. But that doesn't excuse any harmful choices she's made, especially after Kenneth Mejia won over the majority of voters in each of LA's 15 Council Districts in 2022 with unwavering leftist values. And I don't think these shifts are just a reaction to redistricting or the laughably desperate failed recall attempts conservatives have led against her. In my view, her increasingly cautious political calculations combined with close alliances with centrists like Karen Bass point to ambitions for a 2030 mayoral bid when Bass terms out. That is purely speculative, but it would explain many of Nithya's motivations. Time will tell if this prediction is correct, but Gavin Newsom is an unfortunate example of what happens when politicians seek higher office.

Anyone supporting LA Councilmember @hugoforcd13.bsky.social’s re-election need to sit with his hypocrisy. Sweeps destroy shelter/IDs, making it easier for ICE to abduct undocumented folks at encampments (already happening) at a time when many people can’t pay rent bc it’s unsafe to go to work.

If you don't know about LA's National Special Security Event designation, you have no idea what's really happening in our city. Mayor Karen Bass and Governor Gavin Newsom handed the Department of Homeland Security unprecedented authority to coordinate with local "law enforcement" through 2028.
THE 2028 OLYMPICS ARE BRINGING ICE TO LA
LA has invited several global sports events to town: the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the 2027 Super Bowl, and the 2028 Olympics and
Paralympics.
The Department of Homeland Security classifies major events like the Olympics as "National Special Security Events" (NSSEs). This classification means local police and sheriffs will coordinate closely with the FBI, Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE), Customs and Border Protection (CBP), the Secret Service, and the U.S. Military.
The NSSE threatens any effort to make LA a "Sanctuary City," putting undocumented Angelenos at risk.
ICE
niet
WHAT HAPPENS IN AN NSSE:
HARASSMENT AND CRIMINALIZATION OF IMMIGRANTS: At past NSSE events, federal security forces have conducted raids and racially profiled immigrants. They have harassed and arrested or fined people who work in the informal economy, from street vendors to sex workers. If local and federal police are sharing information, undocumented Angelenos will be more vulnerable to deportation.
MILITARIZED OLYMPICS ZONES: At major sports events, the areas around stadiums are fenced off to create a "security perimeter," blocking or limiting access to people's homes and businesses. This can disrupt the livelihoods of small business owners, workers, and street vendors. These security perimeters will be patrolled by armed military troops and police.
A DANGEROUS SURVEILLANCE LEGACY: Local police get tons of new weapons and surveillance equipment when their city hosts a NSSE event. After LA's 1984 Olympics, LAPD turned its new military weapons on Black and Brown Angelenos in the so-called "war on drugs." With major events planned for 2026, 2027, and 2028, and LA elites' desire to keep hosting major events in the future, we face the risk that hyper-militarized event-policing becomes a permanent reality for LA.
FACIAL RECOGNITION: For the 2028 Olympics, we know LA is expanding its use of facial recognition technology.

The issue w/ current discourse of resistance is the focus on who the “real criminals” are instead of the process of criminalization by which certain people, groups & actions will *always* be framed as threats/violent while enabling others to engage in extreme forms of violence w/ absolute impunity.

Sanctuary is a dangerous lie that liberals have sold you. They were more concerned with patting themselves on the back than educating vulnerable people about the fascistic conditions they co-signed. They will never take meaningful action to block ICE.
A potentially even greater threat to sanctuary protections is the National Special Security Event (NSSE) designation. What is an NSSE designation? When the federal government decides an event is so large and so significant that it poses a national security threat, the Department of Homeland Security mandates the Secret Service to oversee cooperation between local, state, and federal agencies, including ICE.

Usually, an event is issued an NSSE designation months in advance. In January of this year, the Secretary of Homeland Security designated the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles as an NSSE four years in advance—the earliest this has ever happened. That means federal agencies already have authority to coordinate with local agencies, and we don’t know what kind of security measures local agencies have in place to protect the personal information of undocumented immigrants or any other LA resident. (Fortunately for all of us, LA City Council recently approved “LAPD Live,” a massive new surveillance program that gives cops real-time access to public and private security cameras across the City!) Under the NSSE designation, ICE could also potentially issue a legal challenge, claiming its authority supersedes local sanctuary protections.
