Archaeology student investigating Pacific pottery. Previously a bioinformatician, I analyse p-xrf, LA-ICPMS, micro-CT data from pottery. I also experiment with using VR to convey archaeological concepts.

I was checking the doesthedogdie site to see if the dog dies in a movie. I was looking through all the trigger warnings out of interest and see that there is now a - does a valuable/ historical artefact get broken? - I want to know which archaeologist / heritage person asked for this!

I don’t want to click on this ad that appeared in my Apple News feed- is it AI? Click bait? Or did Idaho really move?

2025 was mostly garbage, but there were some good moments. One of my favorites was when a family of beavers built a dam in just a few days, saving the Czech Republic 30 million Czech koruna (US$1.2 million) for a wetland restoration project the government had been planning for 7 years. 🦫 🌿

After plans stalled for a new dam in the Czech Republic, eight beavers saved the day seemingly overnight. “At this point, nothing that beavers do surprises me.”

Hivemind question: Palmer Penguins is doing great work avoiding overuse of Fisher's iris data. What other "dataset substitutions" do you like? Or just generally other cool, real, open datasets that are good for teaching because established methods work pretty well on them?

Hey #StatsSky, what are you favorite papers to cite when you need to justify something that is obvious (I once had a reviewer ask we justify the use of logistic regression on a binary outcome) or when you need to push-back on silly reviewer requests (e.g., asking for p-values in table 1)?

My achievement for the month, getting the microscope camera software working again (or rather getting uni IT to get it working again). I took a photo of a pyroxenic placer temper, from a sherd found in Vanua Levu, to celebrate.
Bright pink, green and purple minerals- pyroxenes, in a dark clay matrix.Pyroxenes in PPL light, they appear very pale yellow-green, with angular shapes and cleavage lines.
