The fairy tale continues August 11. 🦢✨ I am officially self-publishing How To Survive This Fairytale, which was featured in @rainbowcrate.bsky.social & currently a finalist in 7 categories for the 2025 Indie Ink Awards. This new edition features a brand new cover by @luposlipaphobya.bsky.social!
An illustration of a nighttime forest path leading to a castle. The text says: "Preorder Available. Coming August 11 in eBook & paperback." A cover reveal for the new edition of my novella How To Survive This Fairytale. It features a red background, and a frame inside of which two men hug each other in a dark, forest background with a castle far behind them. One of the men has a wing instead of an arm.

little tighter. “Do you have a catalog?”

“It would be impossible to make one,” Mal answered. “The library is infinite.”

“Infinite?” the witch rocked back on his heeled boots. “I haven’t seen anything infinite since The Infinite Drowning, a torture device used by a nasty cult over in…” he trailed off. “Sorry, that’s a bit macabre. Do you lend books here? Miss Scheffield’s library is lovely, but I can only read so many bawdy romances. Magic resources there are few and far between, and it would be nice not to have to wait on the postal system when I need to whip up a healing spell swiftly.”

Two Wizards settle in to a cozy breakfast. #WriteSky #WritingPrompts #WritingCommunity
“A salt mine does sound nice,” Mal said, eager to contribute. Spells that required salt, especially witchcraft spells, were innumerable.
“The nicest,” Killdeer agreed. “But alas, it wasn’t meant to be. I fit in a little neater here.” He slid the eggs onto two plates and returned to the table with them and a bread loaf, which, after clearing the table with another handwave, he set down like a magnificent centerpiece. Mal watched as the spellbooks and papers that had littered the table picked themselves up on Killdeer’s command and floated around the room to their proper homes (some of which appeared to be stuffed onto whatever shelf had room to hold them). He then sat himself across from Mal and cut a slice from the loaf with a satisfying crunch.

Text: Armina recently inherited the Blackblood, a semitruck that smuggles illegal magical artifacts across the Arachnida Desert. Plagued by the lingering feelings she has for her ex-girlfriend and co-captain, Valaina, Armina struggles to keep her small operation afloat in a country that hates magic.Image: a young person surrounded by a cloud of black magic and stars with a horse skull poking through
Text:Her complicated circumstances become far worse when she finds Canto, a violent criminal mage, stowing away aboard her truck. Canto has just escaped a death sentence and is on the run from the Huntsmen, the militaristic “peace-keeping” order responsible for the arrest and detainment of mages. Not content with their own tentative freedom, Canto asks for Armina’s help rescuing their mother from the Huntsmen headquarters where she’s being held captive.Image: A young man standing in a rocky outcropping, holding a black sword.
Text: Hesitent to agree to such a dangerous heist when her own livelihood is already in peril, Armina agrees only to take Canto as far west as she feels comfortable. That is until Renn, a prodigy Huntsman, tracks them down, revealing that the Huntsmen are already on their trail. Armina must decide whether her personal safety---and her lingering feelings for Valaina---are more important than facing a cruel regime to save a single innocent life.Image: the cover of the novel Blackblood by Kree Sullivan. This was an unexpected delight. It had been on my TBR for quite a while, and I put off picking it up for some reason. I’m so glad I finally did this year. This was heart-wrenching, beautiful, and sweet, and I haven’t cried so hard reading a book in such a long time. Sure, it was 100+ pages of tears at the end, but it was the cathartic kind of crying you sometimes just really need. This book was a stunner, a 100000/10, and everyone should read it at least once.

This was one of the first books I read this year, and when I finished it I looked at my wife and said, “I just read the best book of 2025. In January.” Technically I did rank one book above this, but I consider my top three so closely tied that any given day my favorite could change. Piranesi is a nearly perfect book. Thought-provoking, wonderous, weird, tragic, joyous, and beautifully written. I’d recommend it to everyone who likes reading. Period.

Text: Top Reads of the Year, 3Text: How to Survive This Fairytale | S. M. Hallow | Fantasy | Horror | Romance
God, this was good. It’s a fairy tale retelling done right, building up a world that can be nasty and cruel, but at the center of it all there are people who lead with compassion, heart, and who offer encouragement to keep going. This book is ruthless in the best way, and I especially appreciate the way it’s written. I love when authors play with structure and form, and this book is such a good example of what can be done by having fun with writing.

Text: Top Reads of the Year, 4Text: The Summer Hikaru Died, Vols. 1-6 | Mokumokuren | Horror | Coming of Age
This covers all the currently released volumes, and probably all the volumes that will come after. This series is a remarkably tender, devastatingly tragic look at grief and growing up. It’s also an undeniably queer story, even if that queerness is never overtly named and even when it has nothing to do with romantic feelings. It’s built into a pervasive sense of otherness and trying to find community in a world where you don’t seem to fit.

I picked this one up after reading a mutual’s 1-star review. At the time, I’d been looking for a book to scratch the r/nosleep itch that had lodged itself deep in my brain, and the way they described it made it sound perfect. It was exactly what I wanted at that moment, likely helped along by the fact that it did originate on nosleep. I preordered the second one the moment I finished this, and the fact that it doesn’t come out until April makes me want to CRY.

Text: Top Reads of the Year, 6Text: The Killer Question | Janice Hallett | Mystery
Before reading this one, I’d read Hallett’s The Examiner and The Appeal. I adored the former and found the latter just okay. The Killer Question blew both out of the water and had me reading the rest of Hallett’s backlog as soon as I could get my hands on them. I love pub trivia, I love mixed media stories, I love zany characters. As someone with a deep obsession with the Knives Out franchise, this scratched that itch so well. So twisty, I couldn’t put it down.

This is one of my recent reads, and it blew away most of its competition with ease. I love when a short-story collection has individual but interconnected tales, and this one does it so well that I hope Chung revisits the Institution’s universe in future entries. The stories here are spooky, thought provoking, and strange while always holding a sense of kindness and wonder at their core.

I first read Ira Levin’s Rosemary’s Baby back in high school, and I loved it. I’m actually shocked it took me this long to get to The Stepford Wives. This book was horrifying, fast-paced fun that holds up uncomfortably well in modern times. It’s just plain great satire that I can’t recommend highly enough. Plus it’s super short, so a free afternoon is all you need!

Surprisingly, I DNFed this book once before giving it a second shot, and I’m so glad I did. It just goes to show that sometimes you have the right book but at the wrong time. This book is a perfect little fairy tale with just the right amount of grotesquery. I, a huge fan of creepy forests and murderous creatures, ate this up in one sitting like I was starving.

Text: Top Reads of the Year, 10Text: Everything Is Tuberculosis. John Green. Non-Fiction

I was apprehensive to pick this one up since 1. I don’t read a ton of Non-fiction and 2. I haven’t read a John Green novel in over a decade. After a friend’s recommendation I read this one, and I’m really glad I did! This history of the impact and ongoing war against Tuberculosis taught me so much while being incredibly accessible. I especially appreciated its focus on the racist and classist implications of this treatable disease’s continued deadliness in the current age.

I had so many books rated 4.5 Stars and up this year, so today I'm posting my honorable mentions. These books could all easily have been in the top 10 this year, it was SO difficult to pick favorites. #booksky #bookrecommendations #bookrecs #favoritebooks #topbooksof2025
Text reads: TOP READS OF THE YEAR. Today's Books: HONORABLE MENTIONS. I read over 70 books this year, and so many were amazing. I want to showcase a few that didn’t quite reach my top ten. These books all received at least a 4.5 star rating from me!Text: Strange Pictures --- Uketsu |
Mystery/Horror | Alongside Uketsu’s other novel, Strange Houses, Strange Pictures is a fun, twisty romp with mixed-media elements that really add to the experience

Hide --- Kiersten White |
Horror | dark, gory, and fast-paced in a double-trouble horror-combo setting: a reality show in an abandoned theme park

The Backyard Bird Chronicles --- Amy Tan |
Non-fiction | There’s something uniquely delightful about seeing famous author Amy Tan go absolutely unhinged about the birds in her yardThe Haar --- David Sodergren |
Horror | I read a lot of horror this year, and I appreciate The Haar for its unique approach of being both incredibly gory and softly romantic

When the Tides Held the Moon --- Venessa Vida Kelley |
Romance/Fantasy/Historical | This book is an absolute stunner of historical romance with beautiful writing and such tender relationships. Cannot recommend this one enough

Cursed Bunny --- Bora Chung |
Horror/Fable | This is a short story collection, and it’s a fantastic mix of the weird, tragic, and wonderful. There are some fables here that feel right out of classic fairytales.

You Weren’t Meant to be Human --- Andrew Joseph White |
Horror | Horrific yet beautiful in its righteous rage. Read the content warnings, then read this one. AJW never misses.

What Stalks the Deep --- T. Kingfisher |
Horror | I adore T. Kingfisher, and this is probably my favorite of the Sworn Soldier Series. I hate caves, so this one hit my eerie buttons perfectly.

The Labyrinth House Murders --- Yukito Ayatsuji |
Mystery | This is my third House Murders book and my second favorite! They’re all fantastic, and I really enjoyed putting together the mystery in this one.

Found --- Anthology |
Horror | Both this and Found 2 were SO much fun. I was really craving found-footage horror this year, and this hit this spot like no other.
