A visit to the European Solidarity Centre at the Gdańsk Shipyard. The moving permanent exhibition charts the 20th-century history of Solidarność and the political changes it triggered in Central and Eastern Europe, while temporary displays reflect upon current conflict in the region.

Highlights from a recent visit to the National Museum in #Gdańsk, #Poland: Late #Gothic and #Renaissance altarpieces, #Baroque portraits, a dedicated pewter gallery and sacred and secular treasury art, all displayed within the historic setting of a former Franciscan friary.

More Baroque art from my London visit, this time the 17th century Spanish painter Francisco de Zurbarán @nationalgalleryuk.bsky.social. The #exhibition includes a range of religious artworks, as well as mythological and still life paintings, among them some by the artist's son, Juan de Zurbarán.

Now on @royalacademyarts.bsky.social: an #exhibition of the work of the 17th-century Brussels-based artist Michaelina Wautier. It shows the thematic breadth of her work, including a large mythological painting called 'The Triumph of Bacchus', religious artworks, and depictions of children.

Alfriston Clergy House, the first historic property to be acquired by @nationaltrust.org.uk for £10 in 1896. This Sussex hall-house is also home to the first item of furniture acquired by the Trust: a bench. The house was once lived in by Robert Witt, a co-founder of @courtauld.bsky.social

Shahzia Sikander’s video artwork The Last Post (2010). Through precisely inked and animated scenes, it critically considers the legacy of British colonialism in Asia, using her signature approach of infusing Indo-Persian miniature paintings with a contemporary perspective.

Listening to the raindrops as I write made me think of 'Cab in the Rain' by Polish artist Józef Pankiewicz. Painted in 1896, but it feels so immediate. This artwork is in the collections of the National Museum in Kraków. Can you spot the cab?
