Any system where property takes priority over human life just feels immoral. In Finland any education on self defence, (I have received some,) also goes through the principle of pakkotila, (lit. forced circumstances,) principle that peoples immediate wellbeing always takes priority over property.

Keskiarvotusta parhaimmillaan!

As a "hard armour and lot of it" kind of a guy myself, I'm still gonna prech this and refer everyone to the onion of survivability for further context.

Does my translation based on swedish deceive me, or is that literally something like "Strange intelligence"? Because that is a really great word for it.

I think they do something like this in Chile, it has the effect that poorer students have much less access to higher education. Only way I see this not decreasing social mobilty is with free education, and unlimited student benefits.

It was to a position in Finland so I had sent a finnish CV, which apparently some AI they used had accepted into the shortlist. But the human interviewer couldn't read it.

I had experience earlier this year where I was shortlisted for an interview in a major US tech firm based on my CV. First thing the interviewer asked was if I could return my CV in a language they could understand...

Tähän voisin lisätä suomen yleisölle, että kyseisen... ööh... alakulttuurin ihmisiä löytyy suomestakin, en kuitenkaan osaa sanoa millä tasolla meillä porukka on tuon tason hulluja. Esimerkiksi tiedän eräässä yliopistossa EA kerhon liippaavan teemoillaan hyvin läheltä rationalisteja.

Yep true, in my old job teaching solid mechanics I prided in my ability to simplify Hooke's law and FEM to every freshman I drunkenly met during their orientation. Hooke's law is just that everything is a spring, and FEM is just using enough springs to make any shape you might need.

Yep. Insurance as an industry has it's roots in people betting which ship would survive their journeys. That was literally the start of Lloyds of London.

Juu niinhän monet noista (ainakin asioiden juuret) tuppaavat olemaan.

Harry Potter is probably the book/series of books with the most disproportionate impact relative to what’s actually in the book itself in history once you take into account the weird computer guys’ love of that Harry Potter fanfic and the anti-trans movements‘ centrality in the global far-right.

Also I really hate this framing that because someone in his family was in Manhattan project, he has some genetic memory that makes him able to skip school, and go immediately to making reactors. It doesn't work that way!?!?

MK @koupdoeil.bsky.social · 15/08/2026
I would like to know what he means by "building a nuclear reactor by 28?" Because if that means that his company made the reactor, that wasn't him, that was some serious professionals he has tricked into this. If he (an amatour) designed the reactor himself, it has no business being licenced.

Yup. But a nation state, or a group of nation states like the Nordic and Baltic countries, could work out the issues. Sweden had a decently advanced design project in the 1960s.

And before anyone gets this wrong, I'm in no way criticizing the efficiency of their genocide, but rather I'm asking if the violent settler culture causes naturally such a high level of sensitization to violence that a genocide doesn't seem to matter.

This reminds me of a fact I remember hearing from a couple of places, that Nazis turned to gassing mainly because of the detrimental effect shooting had to the morality and psyche of the people doing the genocide. Israelis just don't seem to bother thinking that.

Tärkeitä kysymyksiä, mitä tulevaisuuden lainsäädäntö sanoo tutkimustoiminnan harjoittamisesta viinan valmista varten? Entä maitokaupoissa myytävien ydinaseiden vahvuudesta?

I think our estimare about the cargo prices were around 10 times larger than comparable ICE ship. And that didn't even include things such as insurance and waste management. Only way were able to design it was as a special Icebreaker where "for x reason cost doesn't matter"

As a student in nuclear/mechanical engineering, who recently did a coursework designing a nuclear ship. I must say that the only way to economically get civillian nuclear boats working, is to make such ridiculous assumptions about costs, that it doesn't really prove their point.

In electricity production you're right. But nuclear heat production is looking a good possibility. And not only for district heating, but once we start licencing and building higher temperature reactors, that can be used to decarbonise those high temp. industrial processes now using natural gas.

The U.S. government pretty much perfected the models for industrial mobilization when it was the Arsenal of Democracy (sic transit...) and has retained e.g. GOCO (Government Owned, Contractor Operated) plants ever since. Ironically, the country synonymous with free market capitalism.

I have a few, but the one that has the most stuck to my brain is Aleksei Gastev's poem about "metallurgy of the new world". I read it on a book about history of Finnish engineering, and I have ever since thought about it when seeing some impressive feats of technology.

Good overview. I’m very skeptical of the prospects of #electricity generating #SMR s: renewable technologies are much easier to build and their costs keep coming down. Pure heat generation *may* be a different story. A Finnish startup Steady Energy is developing a simple “atomic boiler” for that.
