Having actually just begun learning some speedrun tech for DKC1, seeing that this exists disappoints me even more than it already would have due to seeing all of the great original sprite work in action for hours on end

I love all the visual tricks you can do! Alternate fits, silly props, sliding around, getting hit by items. It's a great time. I've also loved all the opportunities it's given me to pay rad people to make great art; supporting other creators for my silly vision is honestly such a great feeling.

While I do think the negativity is overblown, I can at least sympathize when I remember how general Directs were 5 to 6 years ago compared to how they are now. The frequency (and specialized Directs) really made me have to shift my paradigm on my expectations going in.

010

Korshal Valent @korshalvalent.bsky.social · 09/09/2026

I think part of it is the fact general Directs have changed in nature and people still remember when they were almost exclusively Nintendo titles. Nowadays you get roughly 2 to 3 new Nintendo announcements from 50 minutes with the other 90% being third party trailers. People want Nintendo news!

I saw the opening screening of Coyote vs ACME at my local theater, and I was 33% of the audience. Which, while bad, means ya'll gotta go see it. It really is that good! Laughed a *lot* at things. A beep beep made me emotional! Coyote is an awesome character in this! Watch this!

So DK64? You're a good one in my book. The days of playing you on the Jungle Green N64 wasn't just nostalgia. You're fun!

000

Korshal Valent @korshalvalent.bsky.social · 22/08/2026

NOW, that said, going in knowing some crowns and Nintendo / Rare coins are hard requirements helped a ton. Dropping it on younger players at the very end of the game still isn't amazing, but going into it knowing I needed them made things super smooth. Only the Nintendo coin is extremely missable!

Korshal Valent @korshalvalent.bsky.social · 22/08/2026

While, yes, I did choose to rewind on some of the more tedious bonus barrel games, I really appreciated just how naturally you find things. Especially in the first three worlds, it's so easy to get all the golden bananas! That's 75% of your minimum for game clear, and blueprints do the rest.

100

Korshal Valent @korshalvalent.bsky.social · 22/08/2026

I'm nearly done with DK64 on NSO, my first time really ever properly beating the game besides a randomizer. I never disliked it to begin with (it's a childhood game of mine), but I was happy to rediscover how charming it is. The backtracking isn't even bad, I'm officially a bit of an apologist!

Korshal Valent @korshalvalent.bsky.social · 19/08/2026

I wish you luck! King Stage 2 is rather...notorious to the fan base. But it's doable with some perseverance!

Also Dynamo is actually easier cause you can point up, IMO, but it's still not fun!

110

Korshal Valent @korshalvalent.bsky.social · 19/08/2026

Bass, once you get past your first RM, has it fairly good when you know your weakness order! ...which means Burner Man is still a pain. Highly recommend you equip Critical Boost, which increases your base attack when low on health if his RNG is doing it's usual thing, or the shield boost.

Korshal Valent @korshalvalent.bsky.social · 16/08/2026

I will continue to die on the hill that Sunshine has my favorite physics of any 3D Mario. The usually floatier feel of Mario got traded in for snappy, responsive movements that when combined with FLUDD gives me all the best feels in the world. ...and they were needed for some of those extra levels!

I've got a few! Cold Man is my short king from MM&B, his design (and weakness animation) are great! Pirate Man is a classic with the eternal music debate: is his theme hopeful or melancholic? And finally Blast Man, who coordinates special effects! Also basically Axl as a Robot Master, design wise
