"If one believes God does not exist, then even if He were
to appear before you, then you wouldn't think it was Him.
In that sense, the world is formed around the desires of the individual."

really enjoyed 'philosophy of the tourist' recently
In the twenty-first-century order, rhizomic mobilisation without misdelivery can only resemble the biopower of Empire. All resistance must begin with the reperformance of misdelivery. I will call this the principle of the tourist. The new solidarity of the twenty-first century begins there.

But since philosophy and religion are inherently activities that strive towards universality, there is actually a contradiction here: a religion that is simply private—something that one might believe in as a mere hobby—is no longer a religion or anything resembling one. But this is all that is allowed in contemporary society, and Rorty believes that this is a good thing.

There happens to be a suffering human before us. We cannot help but approach them. We empathise. For Rorty, this is the basis of solidarity, the basis of ‘us’, and the basis of society. Isn’t this precisely the operation of misdelivery where rewirings create a small-world graph?> Historically, the Japanese ie has been imagined to be something quite different from the nuclear family. It is said that the ie is centred on economic community rather than blood relations, and is an organisation that can expand relatively flexibly through adoption. It is precisely for this reason that Japanese society was able to smoothly adapt to modernisation by reinterpreting private enterprises as ie.
> — p. 175

> Since the family is a contingent existence in the first place, it can be expanded through chance.
> — p. 176

> To flip this around, it also means that any group that lives together and ‘eats out of the same pot’ can be understood as a family, regardless of sex or reproduction—such a dynamism has existed around the world and continues to exist today.
> — p. 176

> In Japan the word ‘family’ has actually been used with far more flexibility than has been suggested thus far. I say this because lately it has become common for pets such as dogs and cats to be considered as ‘family’. Of course, they are not legally family. But it is an incontrovertible fact that in our society an increasing number of people call their pets ‘family’. There is even health insurance for pets. The expandability of the concept of the family appears here in an extreme form. Because membership in a family can be supported solely with private feelings of love, at times it can even overcome species boundaries—a misdelivery brought on by compassion.Deleuze once wrote that, while the masochist only has the ego, in contrast the sadist only has the superego. Having only the superego means having only a system that is beyond the ego. When I refer to the libertarian as a sadist, it is based on this understanding of sadism. The libertarian/sadist/Stavrogin has no self. There is only an existence beyond the self. There is only the necessity of the world, thus there is no desire. All things are obtainable, yet nothing is desired. The disease of indifference signifies the lack of self.

The illusion (ghost) of the child is the return of the lost self. In the terms of the previous chapter, it is the ‘uncanny’. The return of the uncanny eats away the superego of the superhuman from within.

A child is born from chance and dies by chance. And then a new child is born from chance and before you know it changes into a necessary being. Ilyusha’s death is overcome through such a movement. We generally call this movement family. Thus, the impotent subject surrounded by children may be impotent, but is certainly not powerless. Children will change the world for us. By tearing their bodies from the gravity of ‘this’-ness that entraps them in solitude and entrusting their fate to children, humans can finally escape the nihilism of Ivan/Stavrogin.

Philosophers, regardless of their era, hate children. However, we were all once children. We were all uncanny. We were all children of chance.

At 24 years old, with work and personal life piling up, I felt like I wanted to drop everything and went on a solo trip to Tohoku. Listening to Aliens while gazing at the port town at night from the 6th floor of a cheap business hotel is probably something I'll never forget.

i think this is the most succinct description of my feelings on dietary ethics, from Jacques Ellul's "Theology and Technique"...
The two most important ones have to do on the one hand with the animals. The Sabbath is also instituted for the animals (Exod 23:12): the animal cannot be exploited up to the extreme limit of its strength, be exhausted, or produce until death. The Sabbath is the sign that it enters the Lord’s very rest, that it is beloved of its Lord. The animal can be in the service of man. It is even delivered into the hands of man for the latter’s survival, but killing an animal still remains on a borderline with murder, hence all the Mosaic legislation about blood, which is not a stupid custom of cultural belief, but here again the limit (and it could have taken another form) that God sets to man’s excess.

He must at some point encounter a radical, absolute limit that compels him to accept that the animals and their life belong to God, that God loves them, that God is the Father to them too. And man must then simply obey this rule set by God to acknowledge that his right of ownership is not absolute, unlimited, that his use is only a permission by God.

...

What we have to know on the contrary is that the animal is beloved of God (whether or not it has a soul is of no concern!), and it is this love that we negate when we claim unlimited dominion over the animal.

I say very firmly that all the new farming systems, with their use of chemical products to speed up growth, are explicit sins, making the disorder of the world worse beyond limits that can be accepted by God.

Williams' "Descent of the Dove" and Tillich's "Shaking of the Foundations", respectively (both of those guys are real ones)
In fact, it is doubtful whether Christendom has ever quite recovered from the mass-conversion of the fashionable ‘classes inside Rome and of the barbaric races outside Rome. Those conversions prepared the way for the Church of the Middle Ages, but the forcibleness of the conversions also prepared the way for the Church of all the after ages. It is at least arguable that the Christian Church will have to return to a pre-Constantine state before she can properly recover the ground she too quickly won. Her victories, among other disadvantages, produced in her children a great tendency to be aware of evil rather than of sin, meaning by evil the wickedness done by others, by sin the wickedness done by oneself. But suddenly, at the climax of his meditation, the psalmist turns away from God. He remembers that there is a dark element in the picture of his life-enmity against God, wickedness, and bloody deeds. And since this element disturbs his picture, he asks God to eradicate it. In sudden rage, he shouts, "If Thou wouldst but slay the wicked, O God, and make the men of blood depart from me, who oppose Thee in their thoughts, and utter Thy name in their crimes! Should I not hate them that hate Thee, O Lord? Should I not despise them? I hate them with the deadliest hatred. They are also my enemies!" These words should disturb anyone who thinks that the problem of life can be solved by meditation and religious elevation. Their mood is quite different from that of the previous words. Praise turns into curse. And the trembling of the heart before the all-observing God is replaced by wrath towards men.

This wrath makes the psalmist feel that he is equal with God, the God from Whom he wished to flee into darkness and death. God must hate those whom he hates; and God's enemies must be his enemies. He has just spoken of the infinite distance between his thoughts and God's thoughts; but he has forgotten. Religious fanaticism appears, that fanaticism which has inflamed the arrogance of Churches, the cruelty of the moralists, and the inflexibility of the orthodox. The sin of religion appears in one of the greatest Psalms. It is that sin which has distorted the history of the Church...

"On the Abolition of All Political Parties," Simone Weil
When water is set in motion by a violent, impetuous current, it ceases to reflect images. Its surface is no longer level; it can no more measure densities. Whether it is moved by a single current or by several conflicting ones, the disturbance is the same.

When a country is in the grip of a collective passion, it becomes unanimous in crime. If it becomes prey to two, or four, or five, or ten collective passions, it is divided among several criminal gangs. Divergent passions do not neutralise one another, as would be the case with a cluster of individual passions. There are too few of them, and each is too strong for any neutralisation to take place. Competition exasperates them; they clash with infernal noise, and amid such din the fragile voices of justice and truth are drowned.

When a country is moved by a collective passion, the likelihood is that any individual will be closer to justice and reason than is the general will – or rather, the caricature of the general will. To assess political parties according to the criteria of truth, justice and the public interest, let us first identify their essential characteristics.

There are three of these:

A political party is a machine to generate collective passions.

A political party is an organisation designed to exert collective pressure upon the minds of all its individual members.

The first objective and also the ultimate goal of any political party is its own growth, without limit.

Because of these three characteristics, every party is totalitarian – potentially, and by aspiration. If one party is not actually totalitarian, it is simply because those parties that surround it are no less so. These three characteristics are factual truths – evident to anyone who has ever had anything to do with the every-day activities of political parties.

Girard starts to read Illich but doesn’t get the whole “conviviality” thing, but Ellul is just like “this is just like my thing too man”
In view of the above observations, we might say that an ethic for a tech-
nical society could only be characterized as an ethic of non-power, of
freedom, of conflicts, and of transgression.
But before going over these four points, it would seem important to
recall that there are many authors who, using different terms, go in the
same direction. When Bertrand de Jouvenel asks that modern man
practice friendliness (an art of living whereby one starts by seeking
what might suit the neighbor, and never uses extreme means, 207
Georges Friedmann speaks of Wisdom, 108 Ivan Illich of Conviviality, 109
Jean Fourastié of personal discipline (which he unfortunately sees real-
ized in the scientific mentality,"° Edward Goldsmith,'' etc., in each
case it is about a reduction of power, a discovery of what is more essen-
tial for man to live in this universe, and each time it is a moral quality
that allows one not to use all means possible.

French guys are allowed to have only one “explains everything” theory and they are mutually incomprehensible
But this Ellulian interpretation of René
Girard's work also has the other great virtue of considerably enriching the file on the articulation between the two bodies of thought. Jean-Claude Guillebaud, as editor to both men, and indebted to them for having "become a Christian again," as he testifies in his intellectual and spiritual autobiography, regretted he had not managed to enable them to meet: despite a few exchanges he was able to provoke, René Girard, according to him, "would prove absolutely impermeable to any critique of technique and to any ecological approach."

(Middlemarch, George Eliot)
“True,” said Dorothea. “It is hard to imagine what sort of notions our farmers and laborers get from their teaching. I have been looking into a volume of sermons by Mr. Tyke: such sermons would be of no use at Lowick—I mean, about imputed righteousness and the prophecies in the Apocalypse. I have always been thinking of the different ways in which Christianity is taught, and whenever I find one way that makes it a wider blessing than any other, I cling to that as the truest—I mean that which takes in the most good of all kinds, and brings in the most people as sharers in it. It is surely better to pardon too much, than to condemn too much. But I should like to see Mr. Farebrother and hear him preach.”
