The Candle
In September 2004, a small black cat called Millie appeared at our door. We let her in, she captured our hearts and never left. She was full of life - funny, sweet, feisty, playful, beautiful. We had to say goodbye on 16 January 2024. This song is a tribute to her - a celebration of her long life and the sadness of saying goodbye. A candle sits on the counter at our vets with a notice saying that, when it is lit, someone is saying goodbye to their beloved pet. I never wanted to be the one they light the candle for but one day, unexpectedly, I was. Anyone who has ever loved a pet will know how hard it is to lose them. They are part of your family and their loss leaves a gaping chasm which can't be filled. Millie was 20 when she left us. When they reach such a good age, you're torn between the knowledge that they can't have much longer but also the feeling that they'll live forever. Millie will live forever in our hearts.
