Fan of MC Pipokinha; currently thinking about how the Chad Mitchell Trio foreshadow both punk rock and adult contemporary music. The people united will never be defeated. koganbot.substack.com www.youtube.com/@koganbot

Still resent Elvis Costello and Sheryl Crow for spelling "everyday" as one word (adj that means "commonplace") rather than "every day," adj "each of them" that modifies the noun "day," which is what they really meant. Winston Reedy, delicate voice, more comfortable than orig; I like each in dif way

Notice the artists in NY and Trinidad show more deference to the measure bars than those in Ivory Coast and Cameroon. The Cameroonian Les Vétérans are my bonus nom, the melodies and rhythms running snaking curves around each other.

"THUNDER OVER ASTORIA. Hecht and MacArthur Turn to Political Satire in 'Soak The Rich'" --Frank S. Nugent, New York Times, October 27, 1935
"So you're a disciple of Karl Marx?" The "bah" was not heard but it was there. "Karl Marx is bourgeois."

Muglia hesitated. Someone called "Cut!" and Mr. Stander, with a slightly apologetic grin, turned to the sad-faced Mr. Hecht.

"Ben," he said, "that 'Karl Marx is bourgeois" has too many s's. And should I say 'bush-wah' or 'bour-shwah'?"

My calling DJ Weng contemplative doesn't mean I have an opinion as to what he's contemplating. In 1964, when Aristotle Onassis was visiting Los Angeles, a newspaper photo found Onassis paused outside the Buster Keaton residence, the caption being, "Aristotle Contemplating The Home Of Buster."

Realizing that my use of "AC" is idiosyncratic: Wikip tells story of easy listening format evolving into adult contemporary, whereas my version has AC as something different from easy listening that ends up replacing it, is something of a spillover from rock, folk, & soul as their audiences grow.

Who is Teddy? I have a To Do list on my computer that I haven't updated since June [the fate of To Do lists], and on it *twice* is the instruction "Read Teddy." But I have no memory of who this "Teddy" is. Might he be one of you?

Trouble w/ Malcriada's own YouTube upload of "Six Seven" is that on the end it adds a minute and a half of credits w/ boring music underneath. Real song is just 2:44 [and should be 1:58--ed.]. Anyway, I use this truncated pirate upload for mixes. www.youtube.com/watch?v=1tzr...

& Nash and James Taylor and Carole King and soft rock and lite rock and love songs, w/ Eagles and Fleetwood Mac and Elton John managing to whomp their way onto AC and Top 40 and FM. [Don't really know how good my memory is here, tho, or even how attentive I was to radio by then.]

Beyond the obvious challenges of funk, disco, metal, glam, and punk, there's adult contemporary, which was the other late '60s radio format to challenge Top 40 (tho may not have gotten its name til later) & also siphoned off a lot of rock; so where once you had Mantovani, now you had Crosby, Stills

Capital-P Prog may be a usage I got from you, btw. Zep may be most interesting for being the art band that crossed to the working class. Anyway, this whole landscape loses its shape/gets reconfigured '73-'76 as rock becomes just plain culture rather than counter-culture.

Well, a *lot* of the bands on U.S. FM were British (counting the Jimi Hendrix Experience as British). By '68, Cream and Hendrix define "rock" way more than Stones & Beatles do, & don't know which U.S. bands do much of the defining. Capital-P Prog is overwhelmingly British (Yes, ELP, King Crimson).

Whereas in my time and place (U.S. but several years before ABBA), "progressive rock" was the broad term the FM rock stations applied to themselves, incl Rolling Stones, Neil Young, James Gang, Big Brother, while one g "Prog" was included in it but specifically meant Genesis, ELP, Yes, and the like.

Brisket is very difficult to cook well; needs lots of cooking so dries out, all the yumminess being transferred to the surrounding broth. So if there's somewhere you can get brisket that's moist and tasty (like at the Bagel Deli on Hampden Ave in Denver), it is kind of a big deal.

Key figure would be lead singer ('87 version of the group) Jeanette Jurado, who is Mexican American from east L.A. - "Mexican" of course is not definitive one way or another: I tend to think of Caribbean dark skin as mostly African, Mexican dark skin mostly indigenous, but I hardly know.

A philosophical cult that was self-consciously derived from and in opposition to the sophists, though actually, few members of the sackSOPHonist cult had read any of the sophists.

It was actually easy for me in the '60s not to hear well-known songs. Had many months where I listened to something other than Top 40. "Ode To Billie Joe" had been around for six months before I heard it. (And it was very good.)

Skim of album: mostly songishness more than songs; think that's a good feature, such tracks might end up landing from pretty good to very good. But 3 (consecutive) best tracks don't even know from songs, "Look At Me Now" song cut down, "Ba Ba Ba" just blips n bops n dreamspeak, then a wordless skit.

"Shake It Off," "Lose Yourself," "Lavender Haze," "Christmases When You Were Mine," "Forever & Always," "Tim McGraw," "You Belong With Me." Actually do hear a lot of delight, even if it's delight that delights in its moroseness. [Haven't listened to "Babylon" or "Cleveland" yet; will do so.]

At this point I would describe myself as someone who hardly knows Taylor Swift's oeuvre, but will stand up for "Red" and "You're Not Sorry" as great pieces of music, if not songs to hum while walking down the street. After that, "Should've Said No," "Look What You Made Me Do," "Innocent"...

Also figured out that, tho the "Pa palè ba mako pa palè kon sa" chant in "Anti Mako" differs in words and meaning from my *previous* Francky Vincent nomination's Atomic Dog interpolation, both owe a debt to "Soul Makossa." www.youtube.com/watch?v=3oZa...

So, whatever the actual title is, pt.wikipedia is simply wrong about what the *records* say that the title is.
000
Frank Kogan @koganbot.bsky.social · 27/09/2026
pt.wikipedia has a whole paragraph about the various titles, though fails to notice that "Ejigbô" is all over the actual records and doesn't explain its choice of "Elegibô (História de Ifá)" as the entry's title. I'd go with the album and "Ejigbô." I wonder how it was registered for copyright.
100
Frank Kogan @koganbot.bsky.social · 27/09/2026
Ah, but pt.wikipedia has the parentheses around "(História de Ifá)" while the Brazilian album, Margareth Menezes (s/t, 1988) has it around "(Ejigbô)"! "I Can't Get No (Satisfaction)" "I'm Not Your (Stepping Stone, Or Whatever)" I'm not even going to get into "(Memphis Blues Again)"

Pronunciation IPA(key): /è.d͡ʒì.ɡ͡bò/ Proper noun Èjìgbò Ejigbo (a town in Nigeria) Derived terms Eléjìgbò [Don't know if the accent grave on the o is definitive, since I recall the circumflex on some of the records.]

Ah yes, I could've done a simple Internet search! Thank you everyone. Seems uncertain as to whether there's an accent grave or a circumflex on the o. But what Dan originally got (and Tom put on the spreadsheet) seems to match the Brazilian alb: "Uma Historia Da Ifa (Ejigbo)"
