Thomas Pynchon’s “Shadow Ticket” was a delightfully bizarre read involving cheese gangsters on the lam, Soviet motorcycle gangs, a golem, international espionage and more, set against the backdrop of The Great Depression. A stellar read!

A copy of Thomas Pynchon’s “Shadow Ticket,” next to an open can of Coca-Cola, a napkin advertising an American Airlines credit card with a Biscoff cookie on top, and a plastic cup with ice and Coke in it. This is all on top of an airplane table.

What’s up, my friends? I haven’t been on here in a while. I hope y’all have been well. Here’s a selfie I took with Elijah Wood while at a screening of SAW with James Wan and Leigh Whannell last week. :-)

Looking for something a bit different to kick off #Noirvember tonight, so I'm going with Murete de un Ciclista (Death of a Cyclist), 1955. Bleak, stark, and steeped in Francoist paranoia. Something genuinely unique in the genre that gives it a really sinister edge. & I need to practice my Spanish.

Just finished Pynchon’s Vineland. I had a great time with it, weaving in and out of the characters’ interactions and flashbacks - ninja nuns, TV-obsessed zombies, government repression, and more. If you updated some references, this could easily be a book about our current moment.

On the topic of The Witcher 3, I’d just like to say that the Crones of Crookback Bog have some of the coolest designs of anything I’ve seen in any game I’ve ever played.

The Crones of Crookback Bog. One has a red netting like cloth over her face and a bag of limbs, the other is bloated and has a bundle of sticks on her face, and the last is more traditionally like a witch, but one of her eye sockets has an insect nest in it.

Having a True Detective moment while playing The Witcher 3

A man saying “Religion is the opiate of the masses! The gods are dead! Thus speaks Master Friedrich of Oxenfurt!”

A man saying “Common folk fear religion and the priests, not the gods. And this fear enslaves us in fetters of ignorance! We must forge a new morality - or rid ourselves of morality altogether.”

Rust Cohle from True Detective holding a pistol and saying “What is that, Nietzsche? Shut the fuck up!”

The state of Florida came in overnight and painted over the Pulse Memorial site crosswalk in Orlando. This crosswalk abided by the state’s laws and was originally installed by them. To be clear, the state surreptitiously painted over this memorial at night against the city’s wishes. Cowards.

I went and saw GRAVE OF THE FIREFLIES in the theater tonight. It’s been a long time since I last saw it, and it was the first time I’ve seen it in theaters. It remains a heartbreaking masterpiece, one of the very few truly anti-war films, and Ghibli’s high water mark.
