I have the impression that at this point they are completely overwhelmed. The "not-more-than-2-per-month" rule from last week was ad hoc to buy some time. Too much noise, drowning out the signal.

I fully agree, but I'm just surprised about people submitting their 1st (!) version so late. I did this too, but only for ESO proposals in the olden days where your could only submit once. But I found that very stressful. Nowadays one could calmly do some final passes after a "save" version is in.

I agree on the scicomm nightmare, they also don't make a catchy abbreviation. That said, since it's just Latin clouds sort of makes it neutral-ish, bc no-one really speaks Latin anymore. 🙃 And to translate "milky" into other languages, try that with German... 😬

I think optical/NIR astronomy could also be interested in such coatings. We paid a lot of money for many-layer coatings of the #Euclid near-infrared filters, and still there was measurable inhomogeneity. I think the company we used already pushed commercial gear to its limits.

Can someone tell me why for JWST/HST/ALMA/... people make their first proposals submission so late? One can submit multiple versions so it simply helps people's mental health to submit a V0.1 at least a day before and then take it from there.

The evaluation process this cycle will be brutal. Even with all proposals below "medium" being refereed outside of panels. I'm happy I served last cycle and not this one.

It's not a slip. There is a whole range of topics behind this comparison: from discouragement of girls to take up STEM topics to old boys networks to glass ceilings for women in science. So it's an absolutely valid comparison and point to make.

This is a search for my own papers by author name, removing a number of coauthor names to prevent other Jahnke,K's being included. Returns ~600 entries. And I notice both a delay in completing some of the stat fields on the side as well as displaying any entry beyond number ~20.

I am on Bluesky and Mastodon. While Mastodon has some hot takes ("did you try using Linux"), it's much calmer, not as breathless as Bluesky. I can't read stuff on Bluesky for more than 10min at a time, Mastodon is much better for my mental health in comparison. Sadly much less astro there by now.

In November, #ADS wants to switch all searches over to #SciX. Currently, for me, complexer searches take factors of many longer in SciX than in ADS. One benchmark that I have takes 7s on ADS, 40s on SciX. Do you have similar experiences? #astronomy #literature #papers

Das Problem ist, dass 99,9% aller Leute nicht am Einsturz des Bürgerhauses beteiligt waren, an der Klimakrise schon. Da ist es einfacher, gerechte Wut über den Einsturz zu haben und Konsequenzen zu fordern. Für Andere halt.
