Watch closely when a cash register asks if you want to round up for charity. Lowe's recently invited me to round up for hurricane relief, which I'm all in favor of. One of the orgs, though, was Samaritan's Purse, run by Franklin Graham. I declined and sent $ to an organization I trust instead.

The Episcopal and UCC churches in Lancaster, PA have Pride flags and Black Lives Matter banners. The Lutherans don't. Easier to do when you have the moral courage to take a public stand.

Two and a half years ago, I asked my church council to put up signs so that we could let our neighborhood know when we're offering community events. They immediately agreed and formed a task force to get signs up. We still have no signs.

We have a statement like that, too. Lots of Lutheran churches have statements; we excel at statements. But very, very few Lutheran churches have *signs* that clear, succinct, and unequivocal.

Regardless of what the Churchwide Assembly does in response to that memorial, the actual Churchwide organization is free to look at it and say, "Okay. As soon as there is ELCA-required training, we'll be sure to standardize the timing of it." And we wonder why nothing substantive ever gets done.

We talk a lot about the decline in trust in institutions but we often miss a key point: huge numbers of institutions, from government to business to the church, have proven themselves untrustworthy. If people don't trust us, it's often because we deserve it.

The bishop uses the rules of procedure to move the 2nd ballot up before everyone is in the room. Bios of three nominees aren't published before the second ballot. 2nd ballot is changed to paper instead of electronic. Not inspiring a lot of trust in the integrity of the process. #lsselca2025

Every year on Memorial Day, I share this video of French caretakers who take sand from Omaha Beach in Normandy, and scrub them into the letters to give them the gold coloring. They do this for all 9,386 US soldiers who died. France also gave us this land as American soil.
