Received an email from Amazon KDP asking me to do a "tax interview" for paying US tax. Logging in reminded me that they're holding any changes to my account hostage until I send them a scan of govt. ID. I'll send ID to the likes of Amazon when hell freezes over. So, I've requested KDP account […]

I remain astonished that one can pay >£600 for varifocal lenses and they're still rather poor for the simple task of looking at a 14" laptop screen on my lap.

@bjn thanks for the offer. I would, of course, have to offer compensation in such a case. I'm not particularly concerned with wide distribution as long as I can get the information out there.

@bjn I'm not familiar with Affinity, presumably some sort of graphic design application? Anyway, I'll have a think about whether the potential for a small sum of money (my book was a bit niche and never popular) outweighs the convenience.

My book on #fencing is out of print and the copyright has reverted to me. Publishing is a faff (inc. Lulu) and I don't expect to make much money from it anyway. So, is there any reason I shouldn't apply a suitable licence, get a DOI (if I can) and put the PDF up on my website?

All proceeding nicely. The one remaining issue to sort out is that I had forgotten that my Plex media drive is APFS formatted. So, it is currently mounted read-only on the Linux server whilst I copy the data to a couple of other drives prior to reformatting.

I note that it's usually not possible to ask colleagues; even if there are other developers on the team (not always the case in the past) they usually aren't familiar with the part of the application on which I'm working or the tools used to maintain it. The LLMs can help with all this, but is […]

Realme Is Unveiling a Hogwarts-Themed Phone for Harry Potter Fans
Realme has officially revealed the design of its Harry Potter-themed phone, and it comes with one of the more elaborate gift boxes we have seen on a smartphone. The company partnered with Warner Bros. Discovery to turn the Realme 16 Pro into a Hogwarts-inspired collectible. It’s also worth noting that there are only 5,000 units available worldwide. ## The Hogwarts-Inspired Design The phone gets a brown finish with a leather-style texture and an Argyle pattern modeled after the Wizard’s Chess scene from the films. A Hogwarts crest sits quietly on the back, and the camera module has been redesigned to look like the bright, spirited eyes of Hedwig the owl. The phrase “Welcome to Hogwarts” is laser-engraved into the metal frame. Realme had already teased pieces of this design earlier this month, including a matching pair of Buds T500 Pro Harry Potter Edition earbuds finished in the same brown and gold color scheme. Under the theming, the phone keeps the same hardware as the standard Realme 16 Pro, including a 6.78-inch AMOLED screen with a 144Hz refresh rate, a 200-megapixel main camera, and a 7,000mAh battery with 80W charging. Honestly, the hardware is pretty decent, but it’s clear that Realme is targeting Harry Potter fans here. ## What Comes in the Gift Box The limited-edition box is shaped like a 1:1 replica of Harry’s Hogwarts trunk, and Realme is only making 5,000 of them for fans around the world. Open it and you will find a Hogwarts acceptance letter, a train ticket, house-crest bookmarks, character postcards, a phone case embossed with the Hogwarts logo, and a phone pin. Realme is showing off the full experience at a pop-up launch event on September 21. Pricing and wide availability have not been announced yet, though Realme has confirmed the lineup will launch in India. This is not Realme’s first trip into fandom territory. The company put out a Game of Thrones-themed version of last year’s Realme 15 Pro, complete with a heat-sensitive back panel and a gift box shaped like a dragon egg chest. If that one is any guide, the Harry Potter Edition is likely to sell out its limited run quickly among collectors, even without a confirmed price.
