That’s also not true. Look at Upstate NY that saw the same explosion in its larger cities described in that article. A higher end home in Rochester with its significantly worse schools than the suburbs sells for more than a suburban house. Source: www.cityofrochester.gov/departments/...

Perhaps the USA’s greatest north flowing river. High Falls Downtown would be a bigger draw if Niagara Falls weren’t 80 miles away.

Not quite as wide, but the Genesee River has its moments. High Falls in the city would be a much bigger draw if Niagara Falls weren’t 80 miles away.

The NYS Senate had a Republican gerrymander hold on until 2018. I lived literally lived in the nexus of three districts in Rochester. My neighborhood is red, my house is in the blue. Those are 3 districts near my house and a 4th across the river. This held, the gerrymandered was broken in Syracise

So a plumber in NYC is literally 2x the rate of a plumber in WNY. Likely explains why most non-single family construction is still union up here…

Why is a plumber in NYC worth twice a plumber in Rochester? I grant you NYC has a higher cost of living, but it isn't that much higher. As a Civil Engineer in WNY, I make competitive wages to my NYC peers.

One corner of His former farm, mostly a school and ball fields today. Great story about white flight northern segregation/racism in why the land he owned eventually ending up in City hands (through normal land transactions) didn’t honor him until the 2010s after over 100 years of public ownership.

This isn’t a very distinguished list: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of... Attorney General is the traditional steppingstone position to both Senate and Governor.

Electrical systems are expensive to operate and will bankrupt a city. Besides, this is what sidewalk plows get you (Rochester) - a sidewalk ramp on a residential street at an an arterial, the second on the residential street itself. Today has been the first day over 20 in more than a week.

This is from Orkin so it is somewhat biased to be sure, but a bioswale is designed to detain water for 24-48 hours after a storm. The alternative, green roofs are a good deal better as it provides a habitat for mosquito predators. But these are orders of magnitude more expensive.
Picture pointing out that mosquito eggs hatch 24 to 48 hours after exposure to water

Let’s also not forget that the station wagon is still very much a staple vehicle on European Roads, you can buy Volvo’s models in the US and Chevy and Ford’s attempts over the last decades haven’t been popularly received.

Here’s a NY state senate map from 12-22 before the Gerrymander was broken (in Syracuse, not Rochester, this gerrymander held). Three state senate districts, 5% of the total number intersected at my house. I lived in one district, was kiddie corner from another, and three houses away from a third).

The letter the Oregon TAG (top National Guard General in the state) sent to his troops needs more visibility on Bluesky.
By now, many of you have heard that approximately 200 of our service members will be mobilized under Title 10 federal authority for operations in the Portland area. I want to take a moment to speak with you directly about what this means and my expectations.
Yesterday Department of Defense requested our support through U.S. Northern Cmd. The mission is straightforward: protect federal facilities and the federal employees working in them.
I need everyone to understand the command relationship with this particular mission.
Once our service members are mobilized under title 10, they are in federal service. They answer to U.S. Northern Command - not to me and not to Gov Kotek. Different authority, and a different chain of command.
I know some of you may have strong feelings about this mission. That's okay. You are citizens first, but you're also service members who took an oath to support and defend the Constitution and follow the orders of the President and the Governor. That oath doesn't come with an asterisk that says, "only when I agree with the mission." We don't get to pick and choose. We execute lawful orders with professionalism and honor, period. That's what sets us apart. That's what makes us the National Guard.
I also want to be clear with those of you who aren't mobilizing: this doesn't diminish our ongoing state mission. We will continue to respond when the Governor calls - whether for wildfires, floods, ice storms, or whatever else Mother Nature or circumstances throw at Oregon. We're still Oregon's Guard, and we remain ready to serve our communities. This hasn't and won't change.
For those of you who are mobilizing, take care of your families. Have a solid family readiness plan. Use your unit Family Readiness Groups. We have Servicemember Family Support, Chaplain, Legal, and other resources available to help you. Remember, your families need to hear from you, even if you can't discuss operational specifics. A phone call home matters more than you think.
For everyone, I'm asking you to be smart on social media. Don't post about unit movements, mobilization details, or operational information. Please don't get into political arguments online while wearing the uniform or identifying yourself as a member of the Oregon Guard. Understand you represent something bigger than yourself, and the public is watching. Show them the professionalism I know you're capable of.

I'll be honest with you - I know this isn't easy. Some people in Oregon won't understand or won't support this mission. Some might even be hostile about it. But we've been through tough situations before. We are professionals who do our duties, regardless of how it's received.
We are the Oregon National Guard - Citizen-Soldiers and Airmen who serve where we live. We've been doing this for over 150 years, through wars, disasters, and everything in between. We don't serve because it's easy or popular. We serve because it's our duty and because we took an oath.
To those mobilizing: Execute your mission with honor. Stay focused, stay professional, and stay safe. To those remaining: stand ready. Support your teammates. And keep taking care of Oregon.
We're in this together.
Always Ready, Always There!

New York State requires it that way now. It is quite uncontroversial, even in the more conservative parts of the state. legislation.nysenate.gov/pdf/bills/20...

It kills me because here’s what was required in Rochester NY on a brutalist tower in an area as dense as much of NYC - downtown across from the regional bus transfer depot. Chain link fence standoff and scaffolding and real protection at the entrance where people actually walk through.
Minimal scaffolding required.

We have at least three different versions of “Richmond has fallen and so have prices,” did no one do the same after Appomattox?

You mean this NYS senate gerrymander? I lived/live in the circled area. It was a good gerrymander too, all three senate districts stayed Republican even after Dems took the NYS senate in 2018.
