I have always assumed it was some kind of brand building exercise in anticipation of something else, maybe even running for a different office.

I once told a Portland City Councilor that one-third of the City’s property tax revenue was consumed by the pension costs of police & firefighters. The Councilor replied, “that can’t possibly be true.” To the Councilor’s credit, they later acknowledged it was true.

Kind of impressive how little the City’s functions change relative to how much the City’s org chart changes.

Someone should let her know that increasing the number of police increases property taxes.

In other words, the two candidates are equally bad. One is no worse or better than the other. It says absolutely nothing about whoever you did rank.

I didn’t rank Rene, and won’t tell you how to vote (progressive or otherwise), but I will tell you that leaving two candidates off your ballot in a ranked choice system is equivalent to stating you are exactly indifferent between the two.

No, your 4th rank has no impact on the election until after your top three are each either declared a winner (25% threshold) or eliminated during tabulation. There are no “points” awarded just because a candidate appears somewhere on a ballot, no matter how low a rank.

kmachiz.bsky.social @kmachiz.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
I suspect you’re right that, in a hypothetical universe where Don’t Rank Rene didn’t exist, Wilson still wins. That doesn’t mean it didn’t have an impact on votes or wasn’t a good idea though. We’re sitting here with 20/20 hindsight. No one knew how close or not any of the three were to winning.

I once told the City that failing to publish a piece of information would be unethical. They spent five figures of taxpayer money fighting me. They had a partner at a law firm write a memo about me, saying I was wrong. Then the information was eventually published on time. Not a good use of money!

So funny to me that UFP spent two years studying the results of the last election and still hasn’t figured out that there is only one way to actually “Ditch Mitch,” which is to run someone to his left. It’s like pure emotion over math.

I think the Chief of Police being in a faction is not really consistent with the spirit of the Charter. But a lot of things in the Charter, even when they are explicitly stated in plain language, are mostly dependent on people choosing to do those things because it’s the right thing to do.

Imagine if the 75 line could be split into two lines. One from N Portland to the airport and the other from the airport to Milwaukie. Instead of trying to do both E-W and N-S poorly on one line, there could be two lines that are both done well.

You can find it here, but it won’t split out police vs. firefighters. You have to look at those Bureaus to get that sense. It’s possible to have small amounts of other interagency revenue, but in practice nearly all is just from the FPDR Bureau. www.portland.gov/budget/docum...

OK, I think. It got the conversation going, which is better than anything I saw under the prior form of government. It also finally put on the record that hiring police increases property taxes. Good to dispel misinformation on that point.

I am not surprised some of these participants have these thoughts, though I was surprised that they were being voiced on the record. Even more shocking was the demeanor on display at the Board meeting, which really doesn’t come across from reading a transcript alone. The video is instructive.

Do such comments discourage applicants from applying? Should anyone who has openly expressed their predetermined desire for a specific outcome be involved in the recruitment process?

How can Staff claim in good faith to respect the demand for an open recruitment process while broadcasting a predetermined desire for the outcome of that process? Does broadcasting a desired outcome undermine a sense of trust that applicants will be evaluated in a fair and impartial manner?

Do the Board and Staff at FPDR foster a culture of transparency? Do Trustees feel entitled to reappointment? Does everyone understand and respect the responsibilities and authorities given by the Charter to the Mayor and Council regarding nomination and approval of Trustees for appointment?

some of the signatories on this list tried and failed to raid PCEF for cops, but even that would have raised property taxes via FPDR.
