I say I feed the birds but, really, it’s a full-menagerie event.

It was our family computer and then I took it to college with me (along with a dot matrix printer and a box of paper). Used it all four years.
An Apple Macintosh Plus, a small, boxy, beige computer with an external hard drive, keyboard and mouse. I didn’t have an extended keyboard like this and I used a trackball instead of a mouse.

I call this one “Evening Feeding of the Birds”.
Two small brown and black juncos, standing on dirt, watching four small, reddish-brown Douglas squirrels and a large grey squirrel eat all of the food. There is a little bit of green grass and foliage around but it has been a dry summer in Seattle.

Lots of posts about Duncan Sheik just mention his one big hit. He had a good-sized catalog, and his Smith covers are fantastic. He put beautiful music out into the world. He will be missed.
Six cds by Duncan Sheik. Four studio albums, one covers album, and a promotional EP of covers.

Get yourself a Steller’s Jay that looks at you like this. Just kidding. Don’t. He’s stalking me. I’m inside the house on the couch. #stellersjay #birdsky
The view through a window. There is a hummingbird feeder made of copper and a suction cup stuck to it. Outside is a leafy green rhododendron. Sitting on a branch is a medium sized bird with blue pants and a black top. He is looking straight at the camera.

Reading outside while I can—no smoke, no rain, but not a lot of green either. The birds make a lot of noise in the bushes because of all the dried leaves and such.
The cover of The Penguin Book of Japanese Short Stories with the classic Penguin black bottom and white strip. The top has green fields, a blue sky, and pink clouds, with a grey railway cutting across it. The little two car train is white with red accents and black windows. I’m using a Spirited Away inspired bookmark in it for obvious reasons.

Saw my first American Goldfinch (female) in my yard today! Washington state bird but I was starting to wonder. #birdsky
A very well camouflaged female goldfinch is slightly yellow with black and white striped wings. She sits on a dead lawn with some small greenish weeds and brown leaves around her.

Yeah! Time to hang out with Din again (and Ana, I guess, although she scares me!).
A maroon book cover for A Trade of Blood by Robert Jackson Bennett. There are goldeny green mushrooms around the edges and a flayed head in the middle. More fungi seem to be growing from the neck hole of said head.

Doing the non-fic thing right now. I enjoyed Richard Holmes’ book The Age of Wonder and have been reading other books lately about Darwin’s effect on his contemporaries so I’m reading this one on Tennyson (who I know almost nothing about).
The cover of The Boundless Deep: Young Tennyson, Science, and the Crisis of Belief by Richard Holmes. The cover is purple, pink and blue with splashes that resemble the night sky, and has Tennyson’s face at the top.

Until the End of the World (1991), dir. Wim Wenders. I have seen the US theatrical cut (158 mins) many, many times but have been watching the Criterion director’s cut, all 287 mins of it, quite a bit recently. I’m not sure many other people have even seen this once. One of the best soundtracks too.
I love you, broken ladder.

Digging in the dirt in the backyard yesterday (former logging land that used to be native land about 15 miles from Seattle) and this agate stone tool popped out. There are apparently agate seams near here. This is still quite a sharp point too!

What a lovely, lovely little novelette this is! Sweetly romantic, quite naughty, and so, so smart, just like all of @zenaldehyde.bsky.social’s stories. Another amazing read from Homeward Books!

@gavingrant.bsky.social warned readers not to rush through WHAT WE ARE SEEKING so, before the last 100 pages, I switched to short stories by @ambersparks.bsky.social. They were the PERFECT companion to Cameron’s book. Gender, sexuality, marriage, religion, it’s all in both. Now back to the novel!
On the left, What We Are Seeking by Cameron Reed is blue fading to purple with an alien sort of magnolia flower on it in creams and yellows. On the right is And I Do Not Forgive You by Amber Sparks and is is yellow with women’s busts, faces obscured by flowers and red.

Give me a favorite non-Star Trek performance from a Star Trek actor. Recently, Jack Quaid in Novocaine. Granted, it was hilarious that you could close your eyes and imagine it was a bonkers, violent movie starring Boimler.

Out with the old books and in with the new/used. WHEN WE WERE REAL is just a copy for my shelves since I can’t stop thinking about it months later!
Three book covers and an upside-down puzzle on a maple coffee table. The books are PLATFORM DECAY by Martha Wells with Murderbot on the cover, WHEN WE WERE REAL by Daryl Gregory (pinky-orange with clouds and cloud sheep scattered around), and THE NOH MASK MURDER by Akimitsu Takagi, teal and black with a devilish Noh mask.

I think the library is going to need more than 5 copies of this audiobook! I’m looking forward to THE LAST CONTRACT OF ISAKO because I didn’t expect to enjoy The Jade Saga series but it was unputdownable (in my ears).
A screenshot of the King County Library Libby app where I got to be lucky number 100 on the holds list for The Last Contract of Isako by Fonda Lee. The book cover is a woman with windblown black hair in a red swooshy coat, holding a sword and looking out at a snowy landscape.

Today’s blessed bird
A spotted towhee is a black bird with white spots behind its head, an orange tummy, and red eyes. This one is sitting in a bird feeder next to a green rhododendron bush and across from some evergreens. The sun is perched on its head, making it seem like a very special bird indeed.

Okay, phones down, books up. I’m going with CARPE JUGULUM by Terry Pratchett for #MarchMagics2026.
The cover of Carpe Jugulum is dark blue with a large white moon and a black silhouette of a coach and horses flying over it on a sparkly trail. The book is sitting on a multi-colored puzzle called Venetian Escape, which would sure be nice right about now.

Today’s “bad photo through the window” visitor for #NationalBirdDay. The flickers have finally figured out good positioning on the suet cage so that they can stab down like they want to. Also, my husband is accusing me of reverting all of the local birds to carnivores.
A Northern Flicker, grey with a black collar and a fancy spotted tummy, on a black cage that houses a delicious (to them) suet block. Don’t look up what suet is. And don’t smell it up close. You will gag.

My final finished book of 2025 and number 100 for the year. I solved both mysteries in this one so I’m pretty sure that @martinedwardsbooks.bsky.social has to give me a prize or a job or something now. Or maybe the reading of a good book is its own prize?

An ofrenda for Jane. #DiáDeLosMuertos #JaneGoodall
A Diá de Los Muertos ofrenda with a candle (pumpkin) for fire, mariposas (black) and banner for wind/air, rain behind the window for water, and a churro chocolate bar for earth (because the pan de muerto is still in progress). There are also fake marigold flowers and a stylized cat plush. In the center are three Jane Goodall books, My Life With the Chimpanzees, written early in her career, In the Shadow of Man (signed) from later, and a celebratory coffee table book Jane Goodall: 50 Years at Gombe. Also included is a Jane Goodall Lego set. All of the colors are bright and happy because she brought light to the world.

A receipt showing purchase of The Shamshine Blind so that Paz Pardo and I can legally be internet friends. I also preordered Midnight Timetable by Bora Chung (translated by Anton Hur) which comes out next week and We Will Rise Again which comes out in December. The sprayed edge of KATABASIS by R. F. Kuang has orange and red flames and flowing turquoise water and a badge in the center that says Hell is Other People. Probably not entirely a coincidence that the octopus art I recently bought from @arielleishere.bsky.social matches the cover of the new @bschillace.brandyschillace.com book. Also, Mola mola!

I tend to curate my reading order like a playlist, with variety and themes and all sorts of fun. But sometimes random luck steps in and you end up with consecutive reads with bright colors and cats on the covers and the connection makes itself. (Just finishing LUMINOUS. OMG.) 💙📚👀
The cover of INFINITE ARCHIVE by Mur Lafferty is in fluorescent pink, yellow and turquoise and has a woman in white on the front and lots of cat silhouettes. LUMINOUS by Silvia Park has a multicolored tiger on it.
