A Hydrogen Atmosphere Could Keep Exomoons Habitable For Billions Of Years astrobiology.com/2026/10/17/a-hydro… 🪐 #AlienLife #Extraterrestrials #Space #Science #SolarSystem #Astrobiology

**[Max Planck Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics]** Liquid water is considered essential for life. Surprisingly, however, stable conditions that are conducive to life could exist far from any sun. A research team from the Excellence Cluster ORIGINS at LMU and the Max Planck Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics (MPE) has shown that moons around free-floating planets can keep their water oceans liquid for up to 4.3 billion years by virtue of dense hydrogen atmospheres and tidal heating – that is to say, for almost as long as the Earth has existed and sufficient time for complex life to develop. Planetary systems often form under unstable conditions. If young planets come too close, they can fling each other out of their orbits. This creates free-floating planets (FFPs), which wander through the galaxy without a parent star. An earlier study by LMU physicist Dr. Giulia Roccetti had shown that gas giants ejected in this way do not necessarily lose all of their moons in the process. **Tidal heating keeps oceans liquid** The ejection does, however, alter the orbits of the moons. They become highly elliptical, such that their distance from the planet constantly changes. The resulting tidal forces rhythmically deform the lunar body, compress its interior, and generate heat through friction. This tidal heating can be sufficient to maintain oceans of liquid water on the surface – even without the energy of a star, and in the cold of interstellar space. **Hydrogen as stable heat trap** The atmosphere determines whether this heat is retained at the surface. On Earth, carbon dioxide functions as an effective greenhouse gas. Earlier studies had demonstrated that carbon dioxide could stabilize life-friendly conditions on exomoons for periods of up to 1.6 billion years. Under the extremely low temperatures of free-floating systems, however, carbon dioxide would condense, causing the atmosphere to lose its protective effect and allowing heat to escape. And so the research team from the fields of astrophysics, biophysics, and astrochemistry investigated hydrogen-rich atmospheres as alternative heat traps. Although molecular hydrogen is largely transparent to infrared radiation, a crucial physical effect arises under high pressures: collision-induced absorption. In this process, colliding hydrogen molecules form transient complexes that can absorb thermal radiation and retain it in the atmosphere. At the same time, hydrogen remains stable even at very low temperatures. **Parallels to early Earth** The findings also furnish new clues to the origin of life. “Our collaboration with the team of Professor Dieter Braun helped us recognize that the cradle of life does not necessarily require a sun,” says David Dahlbüdding, doctoral researcher at LMU and lead author of the study. “We discovered a clear connection between these distant moons and the early Earth, where high concentrations of hydrogen through asteroid impacts could have created the conditions for life.” Tidal forces could not only supply heat, but also drive processes of chemical development. Periodic deformation gives rise to local wet-dry cycles, in which water evaporates and then condenses again. Such cycles are considered an important mechanism for the formation of complex molecules and could facilitate crucial steps on the path to the emergence of life. **Moons hospitable to life in interstellar space** Free-floating planets are thought to be common. According to estimates, there could be as many of these ‘nomadic’ planets in the Milky Way as there are stars. Their moons could provide stable habitats for long periods of time. The new findings could thus significantly broaden the spectrum of possible environments that could harbor life – and show that life could arise and endure even in the darkest regions of the galaxy. **_David Dahlbüdding, Tommaso Grassi, Karan Molaverdikhani, Giulia Roccetti, Barbara Ercolano, Dieter Braun, Paola Caselli.Habitability of Tidally Heated H2-Dominated Exomoons around Free-Floating Planets. James Webb reveals a strange bulge in an alien planet's atmosphere
Astronomers using the James Webb Space Telescope have discovered that a distant alien planet's atmosphere is surprisingly lopsided. Located 1,300 light-years away, the scorching gas giant WASP-17b experiences powerful winds that redistribute heat, causing one side of its atmosphere to bulge outward. A groundbreaking new mapping technique revealed these hidden distortions, confirming predictions about how extreme temperatures and winds shape alien worlds.

Looking for Earth 2.0 in binary systems
While astronomers have found thousands of exoplanets over the last few decades, the true prize continues to elude them—they have yet to find an Earth-mass, rocky planet orbiting in the habitable zone of a sun-like star. That's partially due to cosmic geography—around half of all sun-like stars near us aren't alone. They have one or more companion stars that complicate their orbital dynamics, as well as those of any planets they might host.

Are Aliens Harvesting the Spin of Stars?
One of the challenges of searching for “technosignatures” (i.e. signs that intelligent life somewhere in the universe has created technology) is understanding what to look for. Technology is a very broad area, and different types would show up as different features. One of the most commonly cited is a Dyson sphere, which attempts to encapsulate a star and capture it’s outgoing light to produce energy. But while we’ve looked for the mid-infrared waste heat these structures would produce for decades, we haven’t found a definitive instance of one. According to a new paper, available in pre-print on arXiv by Turkish high school student Sahin Torlakcik, that might be because we are looking for the wrong type of energy all together.

Nearby 'Super Earth' may be a better candidate for life than previously thought
Using the Hobby-Eberly Telescope at McDonald Observatory, astronomers have taken a closer look at a nearby exoplanet and discovered it may be more Earth-like than previously thought. The planet, known as GJ 3378b, orbits a small, cool star called a red dwarf. Just 25 light-years from Earth in the direction of the northern constellation Camelopardalis, it lies in its star's "habitable zone"—the region where temperatures could allow liquid water to exist—making it a candidate to host life.

The rise of space AI might explain the Fermi paradox
Artificial intelligence (AI) is continuing to have a disruptive impact on ever more parts of humanity. But what does it mean in the long run? A new paper, available as a preprint on arXiv from Austrian researcher Sergey Ivliev, extrapolates what the wide-scale adoption of AI means for the future of humanity in space—and in particular, what it means for the ultimate question of whether we're truly alone in the galaxy.

If aliens landed on Earth tomorrow, what would they eat?
With the release of "Disclosure Day," Steven Spielberg's new film about aliens, a question as old as science fiction itself resurfaces: If aliens were to arrive on Earth, would they come to conquer us, to study us ... or perhaps to eat?

It's 2158, and you're chugging away on your Ph.D. in planetary volcanology from the University of Utopia Planitia on Mars. Graduate students still get paid a sub-living wage, so you've been stuck eating freeze-dried ramen for the past three years. You've completed studying Jupiter's moon Io, but now you have to leave the solar system for a good exoplanet analog. While Io's volcanism is caused by tidal heating, you need an exoplanet whose volcanism is caused by extreme heat from its host star. You recently secured funding from the Exoplanet Research Institute for a faster-than-light (FTL) ship, but the exoplanet is required to be less than 50 light-years away.

Famous 'Pink Planet' harbors a salty surprise
Northwestern University-led astronomers have discovered salty skies surrounding the universe's famous "Pink Planet." For more than a decade, the ancient, rosy-hazed world kept astronomers guessing. One of the coldest known planetary-mass companions ever directly imaged, the elusive object is too faint for astronomers to dissect its light from Earth. But new observations from the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) reveal an atmosphere filled with exotic chemistry—and salty clouds unlike anything seen before.

'High-res' is the secret to finding alien life with the next great space telescope
We're still in the definition phase of the Habitable Worlds Observatory (HWO), but it seems like every week a new research group comes out with a paper helping to shape what is becoming one of the most important space telescopes of the 2040s. A new paper posted to the arXiv preprint server from a team of researchers led by Daniel Jaffe of the University of Texas at Austin contributes to this ongoing definition work by arguing that it's time HWO adopted a high-resolution near-IR spectroscopy capability—which sounds great in practice, but so far hasn't been attempted because of technological limitations. But, according to the paper, two recent inventions finally make a working version of an extremely high-resolution exoplanet hunter viable.
