Kevin Lerner @klerner.bsky.social · 01/10/2026This, by the way, is happening one year to the day after local public media lost their federal funding. 000
Kevin Lerner @klerner.bsky.social · 01/10/2026This is it, folks. The new NJ PBS is an experiment in new ways to tell a community’s stories. Some of it will feel familiar, like the nightly newscast. Some could be completely new. But all of it will be rooted in verification, conversation, community and good storytelling. Tune in! 001

Kevin Lerner @klerner.bsky.social · 30/09/2026As a card-carrying member of the Daily Pennsylvanian Alumni Association, I should probably say something snarky about the Cornell Daily Sun. But no. Kevin Lerner @klerner.bsky.social · 27/09/2026The editor of (MORE) told me this and I was skeptical that the regular corrections section came about so recently. Kevin Lerner @klerner.bsky.social · 27/09/2026It took outsiders, including senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan and a snarky independent journalism review called (MORE) to really get the regular corrections section started. And that didn’t happen until the 1970s, 120 years into the paper’s life. 130
Kevin Lerner @klerner.bsky.social · 27/09/2026There is no doubt that the @nytimes.com takes “getting it right” (or at least being seen as trying hard to do so) seriously and their record of public corrections speaks to that. BUT… www.nytimes.com/2026/09/20/b...nytimes.comMistakes? We’ve Made a Few (Gift Article)For most of its life, The New York Times has tried to correct its errors. Kevin Lerner @klerner.bsky.social · 18/09/2026Today is the 175th anniversary of the founding of The @nytimes.com I was interviewed about the paper’s history and significance for The Süddeutsche Zeitung. Kevin Lerner @klerner.bsky.social · 16/09/2026Will they single-handedly figure out a sustainable future for public media and community news? No! But that's sort of the point, and why @stefaniemurray.bsky.social runs the Center for COOPERATIVE Media in our College. The future won't be figured out single-handedly. The name isn't an accident. 000
Kevin Lerner @klerner.bsky.social · 16/09/2026And in the spring, we plan to find ways for even more students to get directly involved, getting hands-on experience while working under the supervision and guidance of the independent professional staff of the station. There's so much still to come and so much for me and our students to learn. 120
Kevin Lerner @klerner.bsky.social · 16/09/2026One of the faculty in my department, Bryan DeNovellis, is also working with a team of students to produce a monthly (at first) sports roundup show called Inside the NJAC, covering all of the action in the New Jersey Athletic Conference. 110

Kevin Lerner @klerner.bsky.social · 16/09/2026Oh, and none of that mentions that Montclair has brought over the entire operations of NJ Spotlight to integrate into this new newsroom, led by its dogged reporter and founder John Mooney (who was the class's first guest speaker). 110
Kevin Lerner @klerner.bsky.social · 16/09/2026We're also doing out best to stay out from under the feet of the professionals who are working hard to get that newscast up and running, but those smart students are there to be a sounding board for the future of news if they're called upon. 110
Kevin Lerner @klerner.bsky.social · 16/09/2026We're examining case studies of other media start-ups and reorganizations, and trying to figure out at least a little bit of the future of public media and community news. Kevin Lerner @klerner.bsky.social · 16/09/2026And it feels like a boondoggle to me to be teaching a seminar tied to the NJ PBS launch, and populated by a dozen of the best students across the 7 majors in the College of Communication and Media at Montclair, but I'm doing it. 140
Kevin Lerner @klerner.bsky.social · 16/09/2026I've already learned a lot about public media, broadcast news roles (I came from the print/digital side before academia), and have met dozens of fascinating people. Kevin Lerner @klerner.bsky.social · 16/09/2026Haven't shared much about this, except for the occasional job posting, but I've been fascinated over the last year watching my University, Montclair State, pursue and win the rights to operate NJ PBS, then launch 21 simultaneous job searches and barrel toward the launch of a newscast on Oct. 1. 2124

Kevin Lerner @klerner.bsky.social · 01/08/2026Sure, you can teach a rope, but can you teach a gigantic news organization like the @nytimes.com that they still need copy editors? (It’s corrected in the online version.) 010
Kevin Lerner @klerner.bsky.social · 31/07/2026I guess you could do this with a Google doc but the photo embedding would be a lot clunkier if it’s possible at all. 010
Kevin Lerner @klerner.bsky.social · 31/07/2026Most of the notes apps (including the ones that come bundled with your operating system will sync between platforms too. If I have my laptop open I’ll create the note there, copy in the box/folder info, then take pictures or scans in the phone version of the app which syncs immediately. 130
Kevin Lerner @klerner.bsky.social · 31/07/2026Also, I usually copy and paste the box and folder names directly from the finding aid, if I have it with me. I’m not typing all of that manually. 120
Kevin Lerner @klerner.bsky.social · 31/07/2026I always take photos/scan into a dedicated note taking app. I used to use Evernote, but I’ve switched to Bear. I create a new note for each box, and then type in a subhead for each folder I scan from. Then the photos or scans pop up in the already-named folder. 120
