Will Congress Renew Controversial Surveillance Law? Electronic Frontier Foundation’s Cindy Cohn
A key provision of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act is set to expire Friday unless it is reauthorized by Congress. Section 702 allows for the warrantless surveillance of foreign nationals believed to be outside of the U.S., yet, in practice, it also sweeps up and stores vast amounts of data from people inside the country, including their emails, texts and cellphone data. The FISA provision was enacted in 2008 to legalize George W. Bush’s warrantless wiretapping program that was developed after 9/11. A bipartisan group of senators is opposing the reauthorization of Section 702 due to President Trump’s naming of MAGA loyalist Bill Pulte as acting director of national intelligence, to replace Tulsi Gabbard, who announced her resignation in May. Pulte has no known background in intelligence. He currently serves as director of the Federal Housing Finance Agency, where he has used his position to carry out Trump’s campaign of retribution against his political enemies. “It took this

BREAKING: Members of the American Diabetes Association (@amdiabetesassn) were escorted by police out of the convention center in New Orleans during the organization's annual meeting #ADA2026 on Friday as they handed out copies of an editorial criticizing Trump administration changes to U.S. biomedical research.Steven Kahn, MBChB, Aaron Kelly, PhD, past ADA president Desmond Schatz, MD, Justin Ryder, PhD, Irl Hirsch, MD, and at least one other member were handing out printed copies of the editorial outside of a keynote speech given by an NIH official.A video taken by MedPage Today shows Kelly being shoved by an officer wearing a badge of a local Constable's office, with Louisiana State Police following close behind. A plainclothes security agent rips the editorials from Kahn's hands.Kahn is then asked to step outside with the officers and security detail. In a separate video provided to MedPage Today, Kahn and Ryder were shown outside of the convention center talking with police after they were escorted outside. Kelly, who was also outside taking the video, said they were "threatened to be arrested for handing out the editorial."In a text message to MedPage Today, Kahn said he and colleagues subsequently walked to another part of the convention center and "they caught up with us again and told us if we come in again we will be arrested."Read the full story at the link in bio.View all 3,191 comments

Fair Vote Canada 🗳️🍁 @fairvote.ca · 19/03/2026
As @acoyne.bsky.social writes in The Globe and Mail, minority governments often deliver more legitimate, negotiated outcomes. So why do we keep producing false majority governments with less than 40% of the vote? Proportional representation would make cooperation the norm.
Screenshot of a The Globe and Mail opinion article by Andrew Coyne titled “A minority government is best suited to manage Canada in a crisis.” Below the headline is a photo of politicians in the House of Commons, with one speaking and another seated behind him. The visible text argues that majority governments often do not represent a true majority of voters, noting recent governments formed with less than 40% support. It states that minority governments have produced important policy achievements because legislation must be negotiated rather than imposed, leading to more durable, broadly supported outcomes.
