Oh no! That area is really bad right now because of homecoming. Glad to hear you’re OK but that sucks.

I find it kind of insulting for the BPA (and anybody who amplified their statement) to use this incident and the crash victims as an opportunity to fear monger about the need for Flock in Berkeley. Real justice would be making the streets in West Berkeley safer for pedestrians.

I love to see the police union using a driver hit and run that severely injured two Spanish tourists on University Ave in West Berkeley as a reason why we need ALPRs for “justice”. Cameras are easier to install and maintain than roads that are actually safe. BPD seems to dismiss anything else.

Knowing my colleagues, I would not be surprised if any explicit decisions to not add that book to a state DOT collection is a result of collection development policies and narrow allocation of resources. But also I hope this is apocryphal.

1 - it's funny to hear these students talking to an LLM and sound just like it. 2 - it's also funny hearing people talk about capital and workers, and not in a Marxist since but in a genuine attempt to calculate and extract the value of labor.

"If you change the capital, you change the workers." *mumbling from a GPT* "Go back to worker and what if you increase L? What's going to happen?" *mumblings of GPT*

There are some students in my library having some LLM talk to them about the value workers contribute to a company, and how to graph the capital value of workers, and it's hard to listen to.

They are becoming more and more explicit that creating dossiers on you and graphing your relationships is the whole point. “Agents” indeed. www.cnbc.com/2026/10/07/m...
Former Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer is taking a try-before-you-buy approach with her new photo-centric AI agent startup Dazzle, a tactic she said is important “for those occasional users or those users who are just trying to see what the service can do at the very beginning.”

Dazzle analyzes users’ personal photos to understand aspects of their lives, such as their family members or interests, and then can take actions like reminding someone that a pair of shoes they recently looked up is on sale online.

It’s a strategy she learned from her early tenure at Google
, before the company built its market-leading online ad platform.

It's hard to stay up to date with AI news. So I'm going to make an agent to find the news, and then an agent to read and synthesize the news, and an agent to consume that synthesis. So I can spend my brain power on important stuff like clearing out my office.

The @berkeleyside.org use of this phot for Clark Kerr (far right) is intriguing. Kerr is off the the right, and they don't identify Mexican president Adolfo López Mateos (shaking hands with LBJ) or UCLA Chancellor Murphy. And then of course Pat Brown in the center, radiant as ever.
A big graduation photo. In the front row is then UCLA Chancellor Franklin Murphy, then Mexican president Adolfo López Mateos shaking hands with U.S. President Johnson, and Kerr to the right. Behind them, in the center of the photo is California Governor Pat Brown looking up into the sun.

when emerging technologies are guided by long-termist utilitarianism, the public gets the deaths and doesn't get the benefits, while the Musks and Kalanicks get vast wealth... the current LLM/AI space is different in many ways, but utilitarian arguments should still be a massive, screaming red flag

In this powerful piece on libraries, this comment stuck out. I went to ALA for the first time this year, and I was struck by the prominent presence of corporate vendors, many of which are sucking libraries dry… www.nytimes.com/interactive/...
Photo of librarian Crystal Gates with quote: I would increase access to electronic materials. Our budget can’t keep pace with demand. The book that I can personally get on Kindle or Audible for $3.99 costs my library $80 to $120, and then we have to return it in three years. I’m limited in the number of checkouts or the number of people. I don’t mind one-copy, one-user restrictions. But telling me I’m going to spend $80 on a book that my patrons no longer have access to in 12 months? It’s not getting damaged. It’s not getting wet. It’s not getting torn up.
