The latest Goodbye, Lara interview essentially confirms any perceived romance with Mari was at best unintentional or worst bait. Koide confirms Mari was not a dual protagonist. Confirms train ending was his only real clear goal. Staff wanted more Luca and Yoshiya. Dog played some good chess.

— So you didn't wait for all the scripts to be finalized before storyboarding.
Koide: We even took a break after finishing Episode 1's storyboards.
— What happened?
Moriyama: Once the scripts through Episode 6 were done, we realized we couldn't quite see the character of Luca, a major figure appearing in Episode 7. We went back to the series outline and reworked it. We brought in not only Anna Kawahara, the series composer, but the writers of individual episodes. Luca went through many versions, didn't he?
Tani: He was a model at first, and the character design still comes from that version. There was also one where he was into the occult and became interested in Lara for that reason.
Moriyama: Right! How did you feel at that Episode 7 meeting, Koide?
Koide: Lara is fundamentally a character-driven anime, so I knew it was bad that we couldn't pin Luca down.
We began the outline meetings around October 2023, finished them within three months, and finalized the Episode 1 script by early March. Around April I began the Episode 1 storyboards and kept moving. We reached a point where the Episode 3 script and Episode 2 storyboards were underway at the same time.

- With that included, the destination of the story feels unpredictable. Mari's boxing and trauma concerning ner motner, and Luca

Koide: We may nave been a note contrary ini including so many things that seem important but aren't (lauchs)
Moriyama: At first we considered making Lara and man sometnine like co-protagonists. but twelve episodes couldn't do both justice; each would end up halt-realized. I remember a meeting where we said. "This really is Lara's story." That's probably why the direction ultimately feels hard to predict (laughs)
Tani: Personally, I wanted to explore Luca more deeply.
Moriyama: Yes. Early on, Luca was meant to appear sooner. Man's older brother Yoshiya was supposed to nave more time on screen as well.
lant: Yoshiya is nugely popular among the women on the Kinema Citrus staff.
Morivama: He is. it's his looks
Kolde: If we'd had, say, four more episodes, we could have done a lot. Without them, though, The animes time became very compressed.
It's a ditticult choice
Tani: As far as length itself goes, I think the tinished Lara has just the right balance.
Kolde: We made it Lara's story rather than a dual-protagonist work partly because I wanted 1o trust that viewers love Ine Litle mermaio and want to see where that story goes here.
Morivama: We wanted viewers to love Lara

It needs to be a coming-of-age story of some kind, and if Lara were perfect, that would be wrong
Tani: Yes.

— The finale cuts off abruptly on a close-up of Mari. It's a striking, almost hard-boiled ending.
Though this is Lara's story, the last cut is Mari.
Koide: That ending was already in the proposal.
I have many reasons, but the largest is this: since it's Lara's coming-of-age story, and called Goodbye, Lara, I wanted to end with the perspective of someone who had witnessed her growth. It might be the audience's perspective, Mari's, or a more abstract one: someone back home seeing off a friend who is leaving for the city. Whoever it was, I wanted to finish lightly from that viewpoint. Not with some extraordinarily unusual or showy cut, but something casual that would leave the audience with something to take home.

— I've heard the team say during production that Lara is a story about love. Now that it is finished, do you still think so?
Koide: We did say that. Love is one of the work's important motifs. Personally, though, I would stress "one of." If I had to express its heart in a phrase, I would say this is a story about leaving home for the city. How viewers take that is up to them.
