Hazel is too smart and determined for her own good. Not big enough for the bench, crate, brick combo barricade though…

This is a wrap up of my 2025 reading. I've selected books in a series that I've enjoyed. In order from top left to bottom right, is the name of the series, the author and number of books in the series as of 2025.
1. Titanium Noir, Nick Harkaway, (2) - son of John Le Carre, writer of some great alternate timeline fiction (Angelmaker is my favourite), this is a science fiction detective novel series.
2. Jonas Merrick, Gerald Seymour, (4) - sort of a John Le Carre Smiley knock off, but very well done
3. Rabbit Factor, Antti Tuomainen (3) - Finnish shenanigans with an insurance actuary and a fun park - murder count surprisingly high.
4. Tyrant Philosophers, Adrian Tchaikovsky, (5) - Why yes he is related. Science Fiction, other world. Funny, but a bit bloody
5. Lucas Davenport, John Sandford, (18) - Minnesota cop who writes computer games and drives a Porsche. Not adverse to shooting the bad guys. Also look for the spinoff series starring Virgil Fucking Flowers.
6. Victor the Assassin, Tom Wood, (13) - If like me you thought the assassin in The Jackal TV series was a bit shit, then this is the series for you. Victor would have toasted that dude in the first 3 pages of the book.
7. Harry Bosch, Michael Connelly, (heaps bro) - Harry's getting old as Connelly makes sure he ages Bosch in real time.
8. Martin Scarsden, Chris Hammer, (4) - quite apart from the fact that a couple have been set on the NSW coast in Australia, this one is Outback Noir, and it's hot out there. Good to read after a Nordic Noir Rabbit Factor, which is usually bloody cold.
9. Poe and Bradshaw, M W Craven, (4) - Tilly Bradshaw is a great character and sometimes these books are quite funny. Dead Ground is a bit funny, but quite bloody, better to start with an earlier one.
10. Slough House, Mick Herron, (9) - When Jacki and I watch the TV series, she nervously asks me, who dies this time? My lips are sealed, but don't get too attached to the characters.
11. The Murderbot Diaries, Martha Wells, (7) - Also a great TV series, very short books which are useful to read towards the end of the year, when you need to boost numbers in your Goodreads Reading Challenge.

Specials thank to the lovely Jacki, my book curator

There’s a dog walker in our area who doesn’t pick up after their apparently very large dog does its business on our berm. So I laid a trap by repositioning the door bell
A snapshot from the ring doorbell positioned high on a garage looking out open window. It overlooks the berm which is what the strip of grass beside the pavement is called in Auckland, Aotearoa New Zealand

After a debacle where I recently purchased The Gone Away World by @harkaway.bsky.social only to find out I already had it (I knew I did) I have reordered and culled the bookshelf. Are you happy with your positioning Mr Harkaway?
An IKEA Billy bookshelf overfilled with books. Top row are books by William Gibson and Neal Stephenson (who never write a book that wasn’t massive, and don’t think I’m fooled by Polestar mate). Second row is Nick Harkaway and Iain M Banks with some SF classics from Philip K Dick, Alfred Bester etc, third row are Mick Herron and a number of books about and by musicians, a small pile of Primo Levi

This is Hazel, a 3 kg cat, and being a cat does not have opposable thumbs. Regardless, she has managed to escape through the locked cat door many times as you can see from the elaborate barricade on the other side. Last night she pushed the wooden step out of the way with her head, hence the bricks

I like to think I’ve done a good job as a dad with my 2 sons, but the other week my oldest (24) got scratched by the cat and said “if it gets infected do I go to a doctor or a vet” and today the youngest (20) asked me “how do you peel a banana”. I believe, as the youth say, “I am shook”.

@chuckdpe.bsky.social @flavorflav.bsky.social any news on upcoming shows in Aotearoa New Zealand? My son was coming with me to the one that was cancelled, in one of the very few times he has rated me cool. I’ve given him my Nation of Millions vinyl and told him stories of the time I saw you in 1988
